Rating our draft period - so far

When you look past the borderline hysteria of supporters and possible trading scenarios that saw some of the best players in the league falling into our lap... our trading has been quite good. If we can secure Frost tomorrow for a decent price then this week will be a success. Many people are understandably down on the week as they were hoping/wishing for a mega signing, but alas, it wasn't to be.

Stretch for a third rounder is a WIN.

Lamumba for Clark (a player who had previously retired, which gave us nothing) is a WIN.

Garlett for picks 61 and 79 is a big WIN as he is a player with plenty of talent, goal sense and something we sorely need- speed!

Hopefully a Frost deal can be done tomorrow and we have a young, athletic, big-bodied key position player who has potential at both ends of the ground.

Add to that we have the chance to draft either the best two mid-fielders in the draft OR the second best mid and the best KPP in the draft-pool.

The week is not what we expected, but that does not mean it's not a good week.

I am disappointed but if you were to take the two lists of players attracted by Neeld and then Roos - there would be little argument as to who recruited the better players.

Neeld attracted a full forward and a centre-half forward. Roos got three unloved mids. Amid all the guff about "trading" and "knowing where the list was" blah blah blah we've done nothing. Lots of melbourne recruiting efforts have struggled to land big fish - neeld didn't. Roos has. And take one of vince or tyson off roos' list and my argument would be overwhelming.

I think people underestimate the effect that the introduction of delisted free agency has on the lesser trades that used to take place involving players of this ilk.

We've seen it happening with a number of clubs where players won't end up traded but rather picked up later for nothing after they're delisted.

From the MFC perspective it's almost certain that these unloved uncontracted players will be delisted soon after the trade period ends (unless a miracle happens tomorrow). We might even decide to pay out the contracts of lesser lights with the promise of rookie listing them allowing us to fulfill our contracts.

Hence, the suggestion made in some quarters that this might happen with Jack Trengove and possibly Michael Evans. The end result is that the delistings might filter down to our current rookies meaning Alexis Georgiou and even Max King might not be safe. I'm throwing the idea up but I really don't know if rules allow us to do this but it could give us extra scope for drafting in the coming month that we might otherwise not have.

As far as assessing the trading so far, it's difficult to say. I'd prefer to look at the overall result when drafting's done.

There is no comparison to Vince, Tyson, Cross, and Lumumba. Despite the nonsense about HL - he is immediately our best attacking defender.

Our football department has been very active in talks, however the dees can't trade by themselves. It takes two to tango.

We are still holding very tradable picks and are probably willing to trade half our list if the right deal comes up. Finish line isn't far away, and we might not be done just yet.

There's no guarantee until 2pm today as to how it's going to play out.

So far I'd describe it as astute recruiting.

So far we've added Lumumba - our immediate most experienced and best attacking defender / wingman - for nothing as Clark was off our books and not part of our total player payments in 2015.

Garlett should be best 22, but he's speculative- however, he was added for a fourth round draft pick. Nothing of major value lost and hopefully an immediate best 22 player in.

Stretch continues a family lineage for a third rounder - and don't forget he was all Australian and tested very well in the combine.

I know Mahoney and Frost's manager says we are working hard to facilitate a trade for him - but I hope not too hard, and he slides to PSD or as a delisted free agency pick up, so again something for nothing and addressing an immediate need of covering the loss of a swingman key position player as a direct replacement for Chip.

We've tried for other trades and failed. We must keep working to get better as a club so that this time next year we are a preferred destination and can land a free agent like Dangerfield. Huge challenge to do so, but you gotta try! Methinks Adelaide might regret not trying to trade him out for picks 2 and 3 in 2014.

Lumumba is an All Australian talent who finished 4th in the Pies B and F this season, and gives us pace and dash off half back, something we seriously lacked this year

Garlett is the small forward we've been screaming out for for years and has booted 40+ goals in multiple seasons and will bring excitement and electricity at the feet of our forwards and running through the midfield at stages. Hes kicked 190 goals in 110 games and is only 25

We got both players for virtually nothing, so i consider it a big win

Stretch/pick 3 for Frawley/pick 39 is also a win for us

Hopefully we can pull something special out today to top off what has been an underrated trade period so far for the MFC

We all give Roos the benefit of the that doubt that he is going to build a game plan gradually - I think neeld was building a list in the same way.

He's lost two structural pieces too. And overseen a team that could not get hogan fit after causing his injury aggravation. So Roos got three mids while losing two pieces of a spine and losing a third to chronic in jury at 19 years of age.
