We all know he's a "see ball get ball" footballer, who lacks vision and creativity, but if you aren't a good runner in today's footy you can't compete.

You are adding another thing to the mix, and of course you are right but which one is his biggest issue we could go back and forward on. To me Col has a lot of deficiencies and the people who say he has or had so much potential are way off the mark.

He always relied on others to get him the ball, and when you are built like that you are meant to get it yourself or have the ability to get on the end of plays - this he struggled to do because of the aforementioned limited running capacity.

What puzzles me is why try him out in a game played in 34 degree heat if he's so underdone? The Dockers actually tried a number of things during the game against the Eagles that didn't make much sense and their defensive run for a Ross Lyon team was virtually non-existent.

It seems to me that Lyon had virtually no interest in showing his hand so early and not in the least bit cared about winning that game. Hence, nothing would be lost in playing an unfit, unready Sylvia which goes to show how much times have changed for the kid.

I think there were reasons for every departure of experienced players at the club which are common to most other organisations and its useless playing the blame game at this time because we're never fully privy to all of the reasons why players left in those turbulent times. On balance, I have few regrets and when I look at today's list I can't see how any of them, Sylvia included, would really enhance the list we have today.

As for Colin at Fremantle - I've read numerous reports about his fitness (or lack thereof) in the lead up to this season and they all suggest that he's a fair way off. A decision was made by the Dockers that he play in the NAB Challenge in the heat and, based on what I saw, the wrong decision was made. He's a long way off anything like his best.

It's interesting to contrast that situation to the one we have at Melbourne where some supporters are exasperated that we don't have Mitch Clark or Mark Jamar out on the park playing in the NAB Challenge or the intraclub game. The fact is they're not ready and it's best to take the most conservative line of approach with your players' bodies if you want to get the best out of them during the season proper.

I have no regrets that we let the players go that we did, I think they were all pretty much disruptive influences and we are, in the long term, better off without them.

It may have hurt the club in the short term to lose the experienced players but long term we have now replaced them with players who appear to have much better character and work ethic. The coach is in charge again not a handful of overinflated egos.

But seriously, there's still a lot of fresh material out there just as uncomfortably on the edge of 'horrendous' as there ever was in Mel Brooks' time... wait... hang on... The Producers was remade in 2005 and feature A-list stars. And it was definitely still skirting the line.

Besides Hannath, Tanner Smith and Matt Taberner who are young key position players vital for Freo's depth given the age of some of their big men I'd say that pretty much every player on that list is better than Sylvia.

Sylvia will be competing with Clancee Pearce, Sutcliff, Crozier, Sheridan, De Boer and Danyle Pearce for a spot in Freo's best 22. De Boer and Clancee are classic Ross Lyon defensive based players. Danyle Pearce was last seasons FA signing. Sutcliff, Crozier and Sheridan are young players with talent on the rise. Skinny types but with speed and skill. Sylvia has a lot of competition.
