Prendergast wasn't a fool. He knew we needed a genuine sized hard working CHF so he drafted Cook. Would've been the perfect fit for the role Dawes is playing. Saw we needed some bigger bodied inside midfielders to go with Scully and Trengove so went for Gysberts. Saw we need skill and pace from half back so drafted Strauss and Bennell and some speed and hardness up front so got Blease and Tapscott.

Unfortunately he forgot that you need talent not just a particular attribute. And then the development under Bailey focused too much on doing what players were good at and not improving weaknesses and building into complete footballers. Neeld's development was just to [censored] them with repetitive training and hope it turned out ok.

To be fair we nabbed Fitzy with a pick in the 50s and Howe with a pick in the 30s those years.. but could have been so much better.

Looking back, it could have easily been Fitz being traded instead of/as well as Gysberts, as neither were in Neeld's good books. Fitzy's VFL form was good enough to get a decent run for us in AFL but he was obviously out of favour under Neeld. Craig takes over and Fitzy takes leaps and bounds.

Neeld quite clearly got a lot of [censored] wrong and Gysberts may or may not be one of them. He simply wasn't big enough for Norf, and probably never tried to root the skippers mrs, so he got cut. He's light yes, but he may be a slow developer. A very slow developer.......

I wouldn't be against having him train with us with a view to be rookied, but he'd need to dig deep. Very [censored] deep.

Perhaps a couple of years in the SANFL would sort him out.

FWIW, from reports on some of the North boards, his fitness/attitude issues centre on weight-training.

But Prendergast could see where the game was likely headed in some ways. Kicking off half back in Strauss - sounds like Hawthorn. Big body mid - sounds like Freo. Invest in key forwards - again Hawthorn or Sydney. Speedy player in the front half in Blease - not much different to Geelong or Sydney's sling shot method.

Prendergast was just like Neeld, Bailey and a bunch of others. Put in to a role for which he massively lacked experience and then provided with no proper supervision and all as part of an equally hapless group of colleagues.

You need to divorce the decision to trade from the result. Game theory states that the value of a choice should be determined by the likelihood of success, not from the actual outcome.

If my assessment is right he only secured three bona fide mid fielders out of the lot. Scully ( no brainer), Gysberts (enough said) and Bail (punt at best).

He missed the direction of the game, he overlooked the needs of the team and lacked the key ingredient for recruiting...the ability to identify talent.

IMO, Cook, Gysberts, Tapscott, Blease and Strauss are blow outs and while you can trump up excuses. It's those picks that have really hurt. In their respective years Watts, Scully and Trengove were favourites at the top of the pack

Together with Cameron he has severely impinged MFCs playing talent. There is an argument about lack of development at MFC and is got some validity. But it's hard to test the case when we don't have the talent coming through the door
