one finals win?

I'm referring to 2006. And of course what I'd give for a final right now!

Just saying the Daniher years culminated in 1 finals win and left Dean Bailey in 2008 with a senior playing group of McDonald Bruce, Green, Moloney and Davey. Throw in a chunk of debt and poor facilities.

Then people describe the recruiting of one particular player or the retirement of McDonald as the problem. Bad decisions sure, but not a drop on the surface of a bigger mess.

IMO you underestimate how difficult it is to play in a diabolical side, particularly at half forward. Sylvia will be a star at Freo because the ball will be in their forward half more than 25-30% of the time.

Judging the two on average Supercoach points per year, which IMO is a very good objective measure, shows the two are close, with Sylvia having a slight edge.

It will be interesting to see how Vince goes in a poor side and I hope you are right.

Edit: Formating

Well Tony, let's hope we are not a poor side next year. Most of us on here are anticipating with competent coaching and leadership we will at least be a competitive mid list combination. Some of us (like me) think we may even sneak into the 8. We certainly will be very much better than last year (which wouldn't be hard admittedly).

As a player, I think Sylvia will be a loss. I think he'll do really well at Freo.

As a player type, I think Vince will perhaps offer more to us than Sylvia.

That said, I would've liked to have retained Sylvia and got Vince, Cross, Tyson, pick 9 and Michie.

Quite simply, our midfield is coming from a very long way behind the pack. And we need quality mids/half backs/half forwards.

Im quite frankly glad Sylvia has gone. His parting words indicate to me he was never capable of realising his ability at Melbourne. Its as though he doesnt respect Melbourne and never has, but instantly respects Freo. careful what you wish for....lol

Bernie...still a lad, actually has a much greater work ethos. Cross has a fantastic attitude. Dont know enough about Michie but its quite likely he'll grab the opportunity to play with gusto.

if theres a singularity about the trading its to get decent footballers who work hard, all day. What a change it will be.

Not sure how he managed a Grandfinal, with just "1 finals win", Daniher is clearly a genuis!

Question- Any chance our pick 40 would be a pick 37 or 38 if a few teams like GWS pass some picks due to only wanting to use 3?

You might want to look up 'culminated' in the dictionary :)

Fat chance as they would have tried to something them for a lower pick and historically I don't think anyone has passed that low, but you never know!

Actually you might be onto something! http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-10-28/draft-numbers-set-to-fall

I think the thing people need to remember about Junior being axed and the angst that ensued is that we wouldn't have Tom McDonald if he'd stayed. Yes, it was handled very badly and led to a great deal of bad blood between the senior players and the management, but he was 33, he looked to be breaking down and we needed to clear space on the list for some young players. His spot was taken by our last live draft pick in Tom McDonald, who could be on his way to being an AA CHB. I still think it was the right call to make. It could have been done a lot better simply through better communication from all parties, but it was still the best call for the team.

breaking down, or made to appear that way??? as the brains trust steered us too deeply into the youth alone push.

No I think Jnr could have gone on playing & leading the Club for 2 more. I would have traded Green or Davey or one of the other bigger names out, for a pick & taken in a hard headed player from somewhere. (the hawks pelchen model)

I'm hoping that Vince (among others) will be one of the catalysts to drag Melbourne up from being a 'poor side'. Clearly Sylvia couldn't, or didn't want to, hence why he went somewhere else.

He was having some nasty problems with his hamstrings that year. I know I'm not the only one who thought he was on his last legs and should make the call himself. If he had done that, or the club had handled things better with pushing him we might have kept him on as a development coach/mentor for the young group Bailey was bringing in, which would have been a huge advantage.

Interesting to see that the MFC website has posted the draft prospect article on Matt Crouch. I don't recall them doing this for any other likely draftees. Maybe the club is considering him as an option for number 9.

I saw that to. Maybe its to bait Collingwood into taking him at 6 instead of 10

I very very very much doubt the recruiting dept has been in touch with the digital media dept on this.

It's more a lack of content at this time of year, and it's possible Crouch could be taken around pick 9 (most probably 10 picks later).

Phew, i hope Clisby isn't a DL regular! I was going to say he'd be unlucky to be cut given his form in the handful of games he played

Iron Man not playing footy? He'll be annoyed, but perhaps he can become a major sponsor

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
