I suspect that many are overlooking that we've lost one of our key mids/on-ballers in Brayshaw. Also, a heart and soul player who lifted those around him. Bigger loss than is being acknowledged I feel.6 points

I am not a fan of the changes to the game plan, but I am also not a premiership coach. We need to move together with the way the game is moving forward, and that means generating more attack from half back. Have we overcorrected? Yes I think we have Do I think we have the foot skills required to execute this new style of play? No I don't But I applaud Goodwin for trying to come up with new ways for us to play and win. Fans complained that we became easy to play against last year, complained that we lost in straight sets twice, now they are complaining because we are trying something different. They complain because they want us to play the kids over guys like Brown, completely ignoring the fact that we have on average 5 players every week with under 20 games experience. They complain that Goodwin never changes things, yet ignore the fact that we have totally changed our midfield mix with Salem, Kosi, Rivers and ANB spending far more time on the ball than ever before. I think that right now our list is not as good as some others, and we need to keep changing and injecting new players into the mix. We have also once again had some injury worries, which has forced us to make changes to the game plan (losing Gus is a major blow, as was losing Bowey and then Salem, who are 2 of our best ball users). It is also entirely possible that we tried something, realised it's not working, and will now try and change things. The season is still very long. Nobody wins a flag in May.5 points

And of course this Basket Case of abominable proportions competitio schedules the game at a time slot that means 3 carry over Demons in the senior side will not be able to play. CARRYST can the AFL get serious and get an AFL reserves comp back up and running?? NOT HAPPY🤮5 points

I’ll keep calling this out every time I see it. It’s simply not true. We were the best side throughout 2021. We beat 16 of the other 17 sides, including all finalists. We were top 4 all year. Project your grumpiness elsewhere.5 points

Like when they came round to ask you about jumper design, logos, and flogging home games interstate? I don't give a toss if we change the name or not, but the way some people carry on you'd think we're playing under the name Al Qaida.5 points

I have to say I want doggies to do well against all but us. I hate the way the media goes after Luke, always feels feral. I thought GW on 360 was surprisingly honest when he spoke of a media campaign in certain quarters against him. And they have several players who are silk. Of course they are cheating throwing basterds when they play us.4 points

Last year they mic’d up Bradshaw during a match (from memory, it was that horrid game against the Giants at Traeger Park). I was so impressed by his on-field leadership. Had no idea just how deep this side of his game went. It’s not recommended viewing right now. Too sad, and agreed, an all too clear indication of a loss that can’t be overstated enough. Very grateful for the fact he’s still a presence at the club, but man do I miss his presence where it’s needed most.4 points

There were about 16 MFC AfLW training. Some first drills involved capture of ribbon. They moved the ball with the emphasis on forward structure. Goal kicking, then 5 minutes of play each way. They bibbed up. Hore in control, setting standards. Coach Stinnear matched up to Taylor, teaching her about the body work and positioning needed as a defender. Ivey was amazing, great talent, good forward craft and has the ability to hit goals. Purcell went through some physio test, then joined the team for the sims. Powerful movements and skills. Mithin was full of leadership qualities and looking fit and strong, Lampard and Bannan showing skills and experience. Goldrick ready to go. Fitzsimon quick mover, Zanker clean hands and getting some goals off, 1 step. The standards were very good, they trained quite extensively. Turner was down with a trainer. Successfully ran a few laps at pace, was in footy boots, seemed to have ticked a box.4 points

what other clubs have haggled and traded aggressively to bring in a gun key forward? bears - joe daniher as a free agent puddy tatts - cameron for the 3 first round picks they got for tim kelly (plus a nice farm to call his own) tiggas - tom lynch as a free agent key forwards don't grow on trees by the by, we traded one in - ben brown, for the pick we got for brayden preuss for gw$, effectively - and won a premiership4 points

Just one comment. JV7 is a midfield bull. His tackling is A grade. Elite tackle rating this year 7. Rated 6th total tackles for the AFL. Oliver down from 7 to 4 this year. Trac at 3 tackles per game. We are losing contested centre clearances. This is killing us. Combine this with turnovers and we are naturally looking like an average team. Goodwin reckons it will be an arm wrestle this week. Both teams will be super desperate. WHO stands up for us? News flash… if we lose it’s Armageddon!!! Goodbye top 4. We need to win. We NEED to win.3 points

Thanks Kev greatly appreciated great that our AFLW Team is back on the park and training so well. Looks like our AFL Team have gone to ground somewhere other than Gosh’s or Casey Fields. Nothing on the MFC site, hope they are all fit and well for our match against Saints.!!3 points

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only thing about their games that creates any interest these days is the post game conference from Saints’ coach Ross Lyon. That’s because he talks so much gibberish, that it provokes a great amount of debate and discussion as to the meaning of his words but not their content. At least with Simon Goodwin, we know what he’s saying which is what his expectations are from his team which, for various reasons are not currently being achieved. Which is exactly why I am tipping the Demons to win this week. They at least retain a clarity of purpose and belief in themselves and this is what should get them across the line in what promises to be the most dull, colourless and boring game of the round. It’s a game that’s been perfectly placed in a Sunday afternoon time slot where the AFL bosses will be hoping that nobody notices. Melbourne fans can be thankful that some of its stalwarts from the rapidly fading memory of the glories of the 2021 flag are still around pouring their hearts and souls into the game - the likes of big hearted ruckman Max Gawn and his deputy Jack Viney, Christian Petracca, Steven May and Alex Neal-Bullen. Many of the others are content to provide cameos of their ability during matches but little else. As it’s still part of the Doug Nicholls round, I’m expecting big things from Kozzy Pickett and Shane McAdam in honour of that recognition along with Maysie who will have the job on the Saints’ King, who their fans say has been due for a big game all season. If Narrm can get its turnover game going instead of fluffing every opportunity it had to do so, it will come out of the game a winner and restore the team’s prospects for 2024. Narrm by 15 points. Lowest iq coach to stay in the top 4 for 3 years. Imagine he was also an intellectual like us K. Things a bit shaky at the minute especially given finding success following stylistic change is historically instantaneous in team sport. We'll be right or we won't. Doesn't change that Goody has delivered us success no other coach could for almost 6 decades.3 points

What a dogsh*t take. We finished top of the ladder and statistically had the second most dominant finals series this century. We absolutely [censored] in the 2021 premiership. Unlike the dogs, we've finished top four the two years since too and we're genuinely premiership contender. The Dogs missed finals altogether post premiership after a fluke win from seventh. We are nothing like the Dogs. Nothing. Time for you to have a lay down champ!3 points

@titan_uranus No, I do agree our midfield is down on previous years, at least in terms of looking at them individually. But we lost gus on the eve of the season. And clarry, whilst performing remarkably well given his interrupted preseason, is not yet back to his best. And it didn't help losing Bowser in round one, which meant salo had to go back. Nor did it help salo also getting injured. Against that viney has been terrific, ditto tracc and Max. What I have been arguing is that the midfield isn't really a significant issue for us. The forward line is a much better issue. Midfields are simply not as important as they were even two seasons ago. Scores from clearances were something 60-70% of total score when goody took over as coach. It's now only 20-30%, with scores from turnover being the main score source. I mean you only have to look at the game we just played. Seven years ago if we were plus 21 for scores from stoppages we win most games. Not now, particularly when our opponents absolutely smash us on scores from turnover. Yes mids play a role in creating turnovers and scoring from them, but no more than the high half forwards and wingers and less than intercepting defenders and half back flankers.3 points

I must agree - Fullarton was recruited as a mature, game ready tall forward who can ruck a bit. We have desperately needed both this season but haven’t given him a look in. Buyers regret? If he doesn’t get picked when we are as desperate as we are he will be a totally wasted trade.3 points

If Jeffo was a Casey player he would barely be talked about as a mid season draft prospect. He might be starting to turn the corner but he’s still a long way to go3 points

I'd consider giving Sestan a run in the seniors before Jefferson. Has made some good strides this year.3 points

Just looked into this thread. First comment: the complaint is about the change in game style. For the last two years there have been any number of critics (moaners) who say Goody doesn't change things, isn't flexible. Now the complaint is that he has been flexible and changed things. Secondly, the theme is: Our game plan is no good. Is that what people thought after the Geelong game? Or when watching the comeback against Carlton? Third: The complaints about failure to get a good KPF and good ball users. As others have said, it is HARD to get s good KPF to swap clubs, and the threads has noted that we tried hard to get Tex. But our recruiting over the last few years has included JVR and Jefferson, as well as trading for BBB, Schache and Fullarton - clearly the club is trying to address this, and I believe that next year JVR will be a star. But young KPFs take time to develop. As for good ball users. - isn't that why we picked Windsor and traded for Hunter and Billings, and why we are playing McVee, Howes, Bowey? Yes, there is room to get much better, but noone should think the club doesn't know these things or isn't addressing them.2 points

Binman was saying on the podcast that the change in game style was to score more from turnover, however the numbers aren’t showing that at all. Have a look at these sobering stats on how we’re fairing in the turnover game this year ‘24 season: Scores from turnover: Ranked 14th Scores from turnover differential: Ranked 13th Last 5 matches: Scores from turnover: Ranked 17th Scores from turnover differential: Ranked 15th Let’s compare it to 2023 Scores from turnover: Ranked 7th (Pies were 6th) Scores from turnover differential: Ranked 3rd (Collingwood was 2nd) The Eagles were a bottom 6 turnover side but they’ve improved over the last 5 matches and are ranked 7th now for differential. I’ve got no idea what the coaches are trying, but our turnover scores and turnover differential (the biggest key indicator of winning the flag) is in the toilet. People on the forum love to say “oh but the Pies lost to the Hawks last year and won the flag”. Yes, they did. But it’s not all about the Win-losses at the moment, it’s about the way we’re playing and we’re playing ****house.2 points

Spargo was brilliant at this for two years and then it seemed to disappear. ANB, Bowey and Windsor of our current players. Salem at his peak, but seems to have lost dare and consistency. I would love one of Eric Gulden, Jordan Dawson or Gryen Myers.2 points

I know many on here will crucify me for saying this but JVR will continue to struggle with his trampoline hands, Petty aint a forward and is seriously overated on this site and Tracc will not get anywhere near superstar status till he nails gettable , clutch goals , when it counts! We have been CRYING out for a Gorilla forward for YEARS and the fact we still haven't been able to secure one really is starting to hit home. Other clubs seem to be able to haggle and trade aggresively but we seemingly cannot! End of rant, for now!2 points

No. He plays one good quarter every game. Sometimes it's not even a quarter, more so 15-20 minutes maybe.2 points
