What a crap post. Late last year? He kicked 3 goals in the preliminary final against Geelong and and had a dozen score assists. He kicked 2 goals in the first final against Brisbane and provided huge amount of forward line pressure. The final game of the season he had 14 disposals, 4 tackles and kicked 3 goals. He kicked a really important goal in the last term to get our resurgence going for that win. Not only was he he doing some incredible defensive work off the ball but he was still hitting the scoreboard. I also found the whole impacting the scoreboard comment boring.. he kicked 40 goals last year playing as a 19 year old small forward in just his 2nd year of AFL. Some of you are seriously outdated with writing kozzie off so early. His upside is scary.10 points

That was the highest standard of AFLW I've seen. Some of that ball movement in the 3rd was poetry in motion. The run from behind was elite, and it just got better and better as the confidence grew. Hopefully that confidence sticks around for the rest of the season. Play like that and we will be very, very hard to beat.7 points

That was the most amazing display of women’s football I’ve seen. In fact, it was equal to some men’s games. The ball movement was superb. Accurate passing. A few weeks ago I was critical of the field kicking of a number of players. I now firmly believe the poor grounds and wind at Casey contributes to poor standards. The Dees love Optus Stadium. Well done girls.6 points

It's a hard one because the rule is subjective. Running across the mark 50m is the most objective I can think of but what's "umpire abuse?" How do you clearly and without any misjudgment define "umpire abuse" What I find offensive, you may not. Calling someone a f**ing cheating c*** is obviously offensive but what about "turn it up"? I hope the umpires use common sense. I would imagine some people are very polite most of the time so you might give them a warning, other players might be horrible. Ironically by trying get people to respect umpires more your forcing them to make tougher and tougher calls, therefore increasing frustration amongst fans and causing more umpire abuse 🤦♂️5 points

That was the best i have seen a woman’s team play. run and spread. On a big ground. long handballs to someone in better position, not just getting rid of the ball. These girls should go all the way after that. They need to take that same game into next week Obliterate the oponent, whoever they are5 points

Can the girls emulate the men and snatch top spot on the last game? Nothing in it at this stage. Current Ladder: Thoughts: We must win to guarantee a top 2 spot. Lose and Brisbane, who play after us, could overtake us on %. Adelaide vs Saints is at Moorabbin which is much larger than their home ground, maybe limiting their scoring ability. While Casey is a ground advantage for us the conditions will make it hard for us to kick a big score. The big advantage of finishing 1st is that the highest placed team in the GF gets the Home ground. Its unlikely to see the ladder positions change. A top 2 spot gives us a Home prelim and a week off before that game. Assuming both Adelaide and Melbourne win next week, top spot will come down to %. At this stage their is nothing in it. Then: If we get top spot our prelim is vs the winner of semi final between 4 and 5, currently North and Fremantle. Most likely Fremantle. If we get 2nd spot our prelim is vs the winner of semi final between 3 and 6, currently Brisbane and Collingwood. Most likely Brisbane We can beat any of those teams in a prelim, especially at Casey. Top spot will be nice to get the Home GF (assuming we win the Prelim). But I doubt the GF will be at Casey as not many people can fit in. A few years ago they got 40,000+ at Adelaide Oval. My guess is if we get there, it will be at Marvel stadium, which should suit us very nicely with the roof closed. As Adelaide were beaten at Home by Bulldogs and North nearly beat them there today I reckon we can beat them there. So bring it on! And, Go Dees!!4 points

Can anyone explain how the umpire is going to differentiate between a player expressing frustration at himself and abuse.4 points

The season is shaping beautifully They were depleted and we took full advantage. A complete, 4 quarter, ruthless performance. A joy to watch That should be the home prelim sown up now. I can't see us losing against Carlton and I don't think the Lions will make up the percentage given they have a North and the doggies to play. North definitely won't make it up Top spot and home finals all the way is a real possibility now. I'll be cheering on the pies today v the Crows (and taking a long shower afterwards). If they can at least be competitive and keep the scores close it will reduce the Crows percentage. Hoping for calm conditions next Saturday evening at Casey and some more accurate kicking Go Dees4 points

Well, sometimes when things click, they really click. 105 points in AFLW is about equivalent to 160 points in the traditional game length. The fact that we left at least 5 goals on the park makes it all the more incredible. Complete domination, with a definite asterisk on it, but you can only play the team in front of you. Next week we could be just as diminished. Loved Colvin's game early when it was there to be won.4 points

Apparently he was on an extreme diet to lose weight. My sister in law did a similar thing last year and suffered a heart attack and was in hospital for at least a couple of weeks dealing with brain trauma. The body got to a point where it just shut down3 points

why is that "abuse"? gesticulating with arms is not abuse, facing the umpire is not abuse. we don't know what he said but i'd guess it was probably something about the carlton player ducking to draw a free. now if he swore at the umpire or said something offensive then that would be abuse, but you don't know what/if he said. let's not reinvent the word abuse or it just becomes ridiculous3 points

Wasn’t that awesome to watch. Stinear has our team playing exhilarating footy a la the boys, highly entertaining. Moving from Fremantle oval to Optus Stadium was a win for us, our skills in windless conditions excelled. Also Meggs wanted everyone to know that Freo had a few late withdrawals due to Covid as you may not have heard… Hoping Zanker is ok as we need her on ball and second ruck work. It’s either Scotty or Parry and Demonland prefers Shelley over Jacqui. West and Purcell have allowed Paxy to play wing and it works better. Our multi-faceted forward line has kicked the highest score on AFLW history. It will be our 2022 finals weapon! Collingwood to upset Adelaide tomorrow and we finish on top with a potential grand final at Casey…Meggs likes the sound of that. ps we still need to defeat Carlton next week at Casey Fields.3 points

P.S. Anyone got some money lying around for a couple of grandstands at Casey?3 points

Best performance I’ve ever seen from any AFLW team! I so much want us to be AFL and AFLW champions, and this is becoming real possibility. It seems to be coming together at the pointy end of the season for our AFLW team, just as it did for our men in 2021.3 points

Love Petty and I personally would have him ahead of Tomlinson currently just on recent form, but people have forgotten how good Tomo was early last year. He also had the best loss % of defensive one on ones before injury. I don't think you have to be quick or dominate aerially to be All-Australian. There's more than enough players throughout the history of the AA team that point to that too. I don't think he would have ended up AA last year had he not been injured, but you have a short memory if you can't recall people talking about how important he was. Tomlinson, who will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury, conceded just one of his 21 one-on-one contests this season to have him ranked as the most miserly defender for contests lost. https://www.afl.com.au/news/621252/the-young-forwards-coming-for-tom-hawkins-crown The fantastic form of defenders like Steven May, Jake Lever and Adam Tomlinson has been crucial. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/the-demon-denial-why-melbourne-s-defence-is-at-its-best-since-1965-20210420-p57ks4.html Melbourne – Adam Tomlinson Melbourne’s defence are finally starting to find some synergy and after superb performances from Jake Lever and Steven May in Round 1, it was Adam Tomlinson’s turn to impact the contest. While he didn’t light the stats sheet alight, Tomlinson was a rock in defence as the Saints tried to claw their way back in ‘Spud’s Game’. The 27-year-old finished with 17 touches at 94 per cent, an equal team-high 11 marks and four rebound 50s. https://www.aflplayers.com.au/news-feed/stories/unsung-heroes-round-2-4 Melbourne- Adam Tomlinson With Steven May substituted out of the game before half-time, Adam Tomlinson had to step up, suddenly presented the challenge of playing on Tom Hawkins. And he did. Tomlinson kept the reigning Coleman Medallist to only two goals, which forced Geelong to search for alternative options going forward. Tomlinson, despite only touching the Sherrin eight times himself, was as important as any Demon on the ground. https://www.aflplayers.com.au/news-feed/stories/unsung-heroes-round-4-53 points

That's another example of why if they do try to enforce this during the year it will be a frustrating mess. Persoanlly I can't see why dissent is not OK as long as it isn't coupled with abuse. The game is difficult to umpire unlike some other games where dissent is almost synonomous with abuse. In AFL it's obvious umps get it wrong often (just watch a match where you don't give a damn who wins). To make dissent illegal is just stupid.2 points

lets take another tack... suppose a player throws the ball, tackles someone high or some other infringement umpire doesn't pay a free player looks at umpire, raises arm in appeal, says "he threw the ball!", no malice or anger in delivery happens all the time directed at ump - tick dissenting an umpire decision (i.e. no free) - tick so, for consistency re dissent this would be a free kick against the dissenter?2 points

Can someone please remind me how many goals Pickett kicked last year and was it the final against Brisbane that he kicked 3 goals? This post is up there with the drop Fritsch calls made last year on Demonland! on other matters: I don’t think we dropped 4 points against Carlton? We also didn’t lose by 10 goals, only 5 points after giving away 6 goals through 50 M penalties and a few centre square infringements. Yet Carlton we’re great. Why don’t we wait until the season actually starts before deciding the sky is falling! Goodwin has some good ammunition pre the season starting, if you don’t put in, you won’t get the rewards! Re depth, listen to Choco Williams views - while the mantra is one soldier put another in, when you lose a Gawn, Clarry or Trac, players 23,24,25 can’t replace them. Seems like Demons have reasonable coverage across the ground and that is all you can expect. Every club seems to carry 3-5 players on the list that fans wonder why, there just aren’t many stars waiting to be plucked out of lower leagues! It seems with few injuries that we are well placed going into 2022! Go Demons in 2022, 2021 premiers no matter what happens!😃2 points

Why don't we change this title to "The no longer embarrassing records Melbourne have changed or have performed since 2014 or 2015. We could at the top of the post just list the very small few we need to address and mark them off when they occur. BTW we must be near the GF record for scoring in the last quarter 9.1 . I think Essendon may have that with 9.6 in 1984 but a check or D/L with the record Would tidy that one up. Surely our 16.4 is a last half record if not even a record for any half of GF footy!?2 points

Yep. And I'd add tbat goals are not his KPI - pressure is. Goals are a bonus. He had 8 tackles against Carlton, a stand out in a low intensity performance from us. And his pressure was outstanding in the practice match against the roos.2 points

A serendipitous star of spin. Tried his hand at afl but didn't really cut it. I think he played club cricket, so it's not like he rose through the normal state ranks. Not a supreme athlete in terms of diet and lifestyle in the beginning. But just WOW, the cream started to rise. Gave cricket and the forgotten art of spin just what it needed. Including yes ...the flipper. What an absolute champion of the game he became. You always knew when he came on something exciting was going to go down. Like THAT ball against poor Mike G. How fun to watch him bowl with five fielders surroundeing the batsman by a couple of feet. The dirt on his hands and that seemingly effortless roll of the wrist and magic of the fingers. The constant look of fear in batsman's eyes and confusion how they were dismissed. I may be naive, but I like to think he's up their in the pearly nets sending a few googlies to Sir Don after a nice Hawaiian pizza and a VB. Condolences to his children. RIP Warnie and thanks for the joy you gave us all.2 points

All the short hit ups look so easy, but that's because Harris is automatic as a long one on one target, so teams drop off to protect it. Harris has been an incredible structural addition this year.2 points

We also gave up a few 50m for 'delaying' when players asked who had the free. It took about 15 seconds. Is that delaying? I would say not? And, Oliver was pinned 50m for giving ball to teammate thinking he had the free. The umps need to not be so whistle happy when it isn't clear who has the free, or the infringement wasn't in line of sight of the player collecting the ball. Or stand next to and point to the player who has the free. Perhaps, it is best to let opps players collect the ball themselves. That is what some other teams do. As an aside, I wonder how many 50m the whingeing cats give up. Good chance by the time they play their game the umps put the whistle away for 50m...2 points

Following the AFL’s determination that players can’t express their opinions on decisions to the umps anymore, it was reported on the radio this morning that a club has instructed its players not to say anything to them at all. Though that could be problematic at the coin toss, maybe we’ll see some interpretive dance? If this is the path the AFL really wants to take, they should instruct the umpires to revert back to referring to players by their numbers not their names and stop pretending they’re best mates with the players.2 points

Some of the greats exceed the sport they play. Jordan in basketball. Peter Brock in V8 car racing. Tiger Woods in golf. Federer in tennis. I will put my hand up as a test cricket tragic - loving it with a passion equal to following the Dees. Warne was on a different plane to all others. To watch him bowl you sat forward on your chair trying to see which small nuance of change he was implementing, or which batsman he was out thinking/outmanouvering. He was magnetic, brilliant, belligerent, joyful. He gambled, whored, smoked, ate rubbish food, dyed his red hair blonde, and messed up his family. His commentary was insightful, brutally honest and uncompromising. As for his cricket, it was the closest thing to perfection you could see. Possibly best summed up by quoting the poet John Keats: "A thing of beauty is a joy forever".2 points

yes he is undersold, esp.in comparison with Smith. Tommo is more tructworthy than Smith re; footy nous. Doesn't fly against team mates, better disposal. Seems for intuitive as a player. Must come in for Petty. Smith scares me in defence.2 points

Getting a little fraught in here. We've all forgotten what losing was like! All things told it's not a bad thing - touched up in the middle, taught some umpiring lessons, got miles in the legs, no injuries, exposed some depth, and still only had a narrow loss. I'm glad we didn't pinch it (although Carlton fan's devastation would have made my week - they celebrated this win hard). We were never going to just Romp to a 2nd flag. We have a good shot but it's going to be a hard journey and we'll need luck as we had last year. Let's see how it folds out. We have a strong team, can expect close to a win every week - that's a great thing and it should be a fun year of going to the footy.2 points

Yes indeed. It was printed that we made a huge off-season play for Chloe Molloy which she turned down. Interestingly, Chloe has not fired so far this year. Whereas Tayla is playing career best footy, outstanding footy really, definitely AA year coming up. Loving watching her. Tays recruitment has turned out very well for both her and the Dees!2 points
