  2. If there’s one player at North Melbourne who represents hardness at the contest, that man is Ben Cunnington. Kangaroos rally around Cunnington as he heads into chemotherapy We wish him well as he faces a round of chemotherapy with the same courage he displays on the football field.

  4. The countries that are on the verge of going into lockdown again are those countries that haven't got enough people vaccinated The 'Age' has a free to read vaccination rate segment for all countries. As well as the details involving Australia. Google will help with daily Covid cases per day Germany & the UK for instance only have 'about' 2/3rds of its peoples vaccinated So in real terms that means that the UK has about 23 million unvaccinated with Germany sitting at about 27 million unvaccinated. Covid cases are high as a result ... often 40,000+ per day. That number is obviously too high. Covid cases today in the USA hit 119,000 but only 58.74% of Americans are double vaccinated By contrast Portugal has approximately 87.54% double vaxxed and only 291 covid cases today. The UAE is sitting at 89.3% double vaxxed with 2698 cases of covid today Here in Australia we are heading for a 95% vaccination rate for those aged 16 and over (and once those aged 12 and under are vaccinated we'll be at 95% right across the board) Only 178 covid cases in NSW today Make of those numbers what you will but the trends I see gives me confidence By the time we're done we could be in front of just about every country in the world. Setting a fine example Even with the slow availability of the vaccine along with hesitancy rates, NSW is nearly at 92% double vaxxed and Victoria has almost caught up (just on 89% double vaxxed) I'm a born realist so unless another strain of covid appears, I can't see us going into lockdown again So the message is for everyone to do their civic duty and get vaccinated. It's the only way we can curtail this virus In footy terms we'll be able to go the games next season at our leisure ... with a high probability of seeing the Demons go back to back

  6. An outstanding interview. Great to get some insights into the external mentors/influences for his own growth: Neil Craig, Mark Viscus (surfing), an interest in the neuro sciences, 'normalising' anxiety: it is ok to be anxious, the 'This is Me' song from the Greatest Showman. Interestingly it was played in the rooms during the warm up for GF. It is the most relaxed Goodwin I have heard. It is great to hear him happy, joking and confident. In prep for next year and beyond he is going to work over the next 4-5 weeks with the coaches and talk to clubs (inside and outside football) that have won premierships multiple times.

  7. Was bored this arvo and rewatched the Brisbane and Geelong finals. Damn that Sparrow kid can play. Set up some great goals in both and backed it in the GF. Might never be a Petracca or Oliver, but looks a very solid 200 plus player

  8. Caught up with a Dad at my boy’s first cricket match this morning. His 15yo footy mad Tiger son was in a boxing gym last week for fitness not really knowing what he was doing and throwing haymakers at the bag. It wasn’t a staff member, but another gym user saw him struggling and came over without prompting to give him advice for a few minutes. The kid didn’t need an introduction, he knew it was Jack Viney and couldn’t believe his luck. Class act Jack, great to hear!

  9. Great interview and so interesting to hear ‘post premiership’ Goody speak. He has a very different, more relaxed style. It must be so empowering for him to have achieved the ultimate success. Taking a team from zero to premiership puts him in the elite AFL coaches category.

  13. Good advice; thanks. Because of my background and a keen interest in 'real history, I am inclined, unfortunately, to err on the side of reality. Others call that pessimism... That genetic predisposition is often manifest in the first born who have parents who were war-ravaged, or who suffered from persecution. My mother, for example, survived two and a half years in a Labor Camp in the Ukraine. She and the other inmates worked a bauxite mine in alternating twelve hour shifts, seven days a week with one day off a month. Most of her fellow inmates - ethnic German women aged under forty from Northern Yugoslavia died from malnutrition and typhoid and suchlike. She weighed 45 kilos when she was released in April 1947. I guess it's one of the reasons I have so little sympathy for those privileged mental midgets who protest about losing what they call 'freedom'.

  14. After Bont’s goal I was already thinking about the next days headlines and what they were going to say. I was dreading the barrage of comments we were going to cop on social media. To have it turn around like that was just astounding. Like the famous song “from misery to happiness.” The fact that some Bulldogs fans already were taunting us saying that we’d have to wait another 57 years shows some real short memories. The fact that our drought never made it to us of great relief to me. I just finished watching it for the upteenth time and already want to watch it again. I’m still not tired of watching it. It was the best day of my life

  17. The selection of Watts was correct, the carry on surrounding it was not. However, the idea that he got ‘smashed’ by Collingwood on the day is a ridiculous furphy. He wasn’t a game-changer and they tried, but the handful of attempts missed the mark and he came up largely unscathed.

  18. Just bumping the thread to bring it back up the board and hope DL posters can enjoy listening to it on a relaxing Sunday. I listened whilst enjoying a coffee this morning and enjoyed the whole 30 minutes. Thanks Demonland for bringing it to us. Really enjoyed listening to Goodys journey from his Day 1 and building relationships with the players and with the club. Great insights to the man and the coaching role. Learnings. New ideas. Fulfillment. His Mentors. Team culture. Leadership. Ownership by the players. Love the openness and more relaxed style in Goody’s conversation. Obviously he’s feeling more content after season 2021 and is definitely in a “happy place”. Love it that Goody recognised the pain and the raw emotions of the long suffering Dees supporters, and how the premiership has brought such happiness and joy to all Demon members and supporters. Recruitment. Goodys echoes what we hear about the MFC (JT) drafting philosophy. High character and competitive nature … willing to compete every day. Thank you Goody. Thank you MFC. We are Proud to Belong. Absolutely!!!

  20. I've just finished listening to the Demonland Podcast Grand Final review for the third time. As well as the well deserved exuberance it has THE BEST ANALYSIS ANYWHERE. Proper thoughtful, in depth, considered, evidence based, rational stuff, a pleasure to listen to. Every detail, every explanation of tactics, momentum changes, key moments and vital contributions was far and above that offered by traditional media. And all three presenters had the barely restrained glee that comes from supporting a premiership team. Kudos all round.

  21. Yes it is. All of us will get the virus, or at least be exposed, many of whom will not become symptomatic or even test positive if they’re vaccinated. As @Maccasays, the societal burden of the illness - hospitalisation, death, and the subsequent need for lockdowns to control that eventuality - that which is currently being talked about and implemented in Europe is entirely on the back of unvaccinated numbers being too high. What these new ‘waves’ overseas are telling us is just how high the vaccinated population percentage needs to be to allow ‘normality’. We’re heading toward 95%, and even higher. Of course ‘spread control’ measures - masks and distancing - are important to slow population infection, but there is ONLY ONE way to negate the broader societal effect, the pandemic in the pandemic if you will, and that is massed vaccination. People are beginning to get the idea here, but jeez it’s frustrating how some (particularly overseas) just don’t. For self, for others, for societal ‘freedom’ - every single aspect of it - the solution couldn’t be more blindingly obvious. Oh, and if 99% of the over-12’s are vaccinated, it couldn’t matter less that the under-12’s aren’t. Evidence now tells us that even with Delta, kids mostly get a sniffle and a headache for a day, then come good and with antibody resistance to reinfection (for how long, who knows, so there should still be longer-term vaccination for them of course).

  22. As faulty mentioned, we have a very high vaccination/take up rate and as we know, the vaccination works so it then just becomes a matter of how many get the vaccine A 59% vaccination rate in the USA and around 70% for a number of European nations isn't going to work. So the pandemic will continue on for the unvaccinated in those countries. A pandemic for the unvaccinated Covid will continue on in Australia as well but the numbers won't be high as there is a real chance that only about 5% will be unvaccinated. 7% tops. Real numbers are trending strongly in that direction And we have brought in measures that will encourage the unvaccinated to get the jab. Effectively, another form of lockdown for those refusing the jab is now in place No vaccine certificate, no entry Hating on and pouring scorn on the unvaccinated isn't the answer though. Gentle persuasion with positive incentives brought in can work. Along with the education process showing these people that the vaccines are effective and safe But Covid is out there and is everywhere (More so in Vic & NSW) so mask wearing along with a cautious attitude when applicable is still needed (in my view)

  26. No doubt in my mind that Watts was the correct call for the #1 pick in 2008. Had we have selected Naitanui, there is no way we would’ve drafted Gawn in 2009.

  29. And 30.15 to 8.8 in second half of finals series games.

  30. Well my view is a realistic view ... using raw data and real numbers. In real terms many countries have far too many of its citizens unvaccinated. We in Australia won't have that issue. An optimist might proclaim that the pandemic is over or perhaps deny that we ever had a problem in the first place (although I'd have a more apt description for the latter category) And I reckon we could reach 96% or 97% vaccinated if we brought in some positive incentives for the unvaccinated. The disincentives would however be having an effect. Reality sinks in eventually With some, you'll never change their minds. The pandemic will never be over for those types as covid isn't going to die off

  32. Sounds about par for the course with the Suns. They effectively have one pick in this draft after stuffing up their salary cap, list management and letting one of their few veteran hard bodied mids slip to a rival cellar dwellar. Why not take a highly speculative skinny ruck prospect who is said to be AFL ready in 2024?

  33. You edited out the bit where I mentioned ongoing mask wearing with a cautious ongoing approach (in Australia) Personally, I'm not going into party mode but if I was still in my mid 20's it would almost certainly be a different story. Even with the double jab, I do not want to contract covid under any circumstances

  34. Hmm. Yes, but not as simple as that. Not all these countries have the same take-up (or rules) when it comes to non-vax measures, especially masking. e.g., the difference between what you see on the Tube in London and the Metro in Paris is night and day. Same for things like cinemas, there's a big difference across countries. As for schools, in France, masks are compulsory, in Austria not (or not all the time). etc. etc. Sticking with kids, there's also a difference in vax rates. France, Spain and Italy have over double the vax rates of 12-17 year olds than say, Germany. On top of all that though, the main reason is that it's now winter. Everyone's cooped up indoors, ventilation is non-existent, and just as in 2020, and as we see every year with viruses like flu, rates go through the roof in Europe at this time of year. One of the reasons why the mediterranean countries like Spain and Italy are doing better for the moment, but presumably even they will feel the pinch once we get into December.

  36. Chesser and Howes seem to be the two most commonly linked to the dees with Butler, Wilmot and Sonsie also mentioned amongst various articles. Van Rooyen and Williams as possibilities as well if we look to add key position depth. Reads as guess work more so than intel and I'd put more stock into Cals phantom draft dropping on Monday as to the dees likely targets. If Sinn were to slide I think that would be the dream result.

  39. I don’t think this is correct. Someone inside the club told me in 2013 that Max would be a star if he got a good run with injury. No way were they thinking about delisting him, and although Jamar was clearly number 1 at the time Max, at least internally, was rated really highly. The club was a shambles in 2012 and we got nothing for Martin in the trade, but there was a pretty high expectation on Max. I never heard the same said about Spencer or Fitzpatrick.

  40. Need to start the building of a solid financial base. In a time of dynamic fixtures and covid limits/hesitancy it won't be easy. Also need to double our FTA appearances medium term to drive sponsorship dollars. This list should give us a five year window of relative success. Let's not squander it.

  41. 1. Home base 2. 75,000+ members 3. AFLW flag 4. Massive home game attendance average. 5. Our 5 current main sponsors (Zurich, Hertz, Jaguar, Beyond Bank and New Balance) being locked in long term like Ford used to be with Geelong. I reckon we will lose NT connection to the thieves at Gold Coast due to AFL pressure. 6. Genuine Premiership contenders at least twice each decade (like Swans and Hawks).
