  1. The Weid’s ‘stressy’ sounds like femoral neck, given he has hip pain. Should be on the quick end of healing (fit, young, best care) but as off-loading is the required management, getting back to full loading ‘match’ fitness is the time swallower. 12 weeks at absolute best, think more 16+. It’s much simpler than a stressy of the foot, so there won’t be complications. Just time. On the plus side, he can go nuts on upper body.

  2. Garry Lyon is very close to the McCartin family and good on him for supporting the kid. I have only media knowledge of Paddy's concussion issues and what he went thru in 2019 sounded horrendous. He had no lifestyle at all. All credit to him for getting to a point where he could be recruited. I think he spent some time training with Sydney late last year. But he is a knock or two away from a life damaging injury if not now in the future. If he was my son I would encourage him to find another career. From an mfc view I don't think it is worth the risk in part because there is no way of knowing how many games he could play and we could easily end up with 3 tall fwds out for a large part of the season. I would hate for it to be like KK. We have T Mc, M Brown, LJ and cameos from Petty to play the tall fwd role(s). For years Richmond played and won a flag with only one tall fwd building a fleet of small players around him. With the recruitment of Bowey, Laurie plus Kozzie, Spargo etc we can have a high performing fwd line with our list, as long as the game plan maximises the talents we have. No from me.

  4. Disagree. The 'nub of the Goodes issue' is that he didn't 'know his place' and in Australia's particular racist environment if you're a 'minority' and dare to stand up to racism, be proud of your heritage and/or challenge people's internalized or casual racism then you will be hounded until you're back in the little box where we like you.

  5. Some really good points mate. Reading this post just reminds me of the sad situation with Shane Tuck and the autopsy report on his brain which was incredibly sad and alarming. I'd rather McCartin worry about his health then footy if that's the case.

  6. Beautiful day for a drive so I decided to take the Corvette out for a test drive and headed down the Eastern to the Monash and on to Cranbourne. Got there late but watched for about 50 minutes or so from behind the bloody fence! I found it difficult to identify the newbies during the session and one group kept their yellow tops on for the whole session, so no numbers. Conditions were near perfect, the ground surface looks superb, it was sunny, warm and there was no wind! Very odd conditions for Casey. They were doing full ground ball movement when I arrived, then broke into 3 groups, 2 doing the handball keeping off routine that has been described in other training reports, the 3rd group included the big boys, Max, Bradtke, TMac and LJ contesting marks and kicking passes back to Farmer, Harmes, Jetta. They then moved to another full ground more contested, ball movement exercise, yellows vs blues. This went for two 10 minute halves. one group was doing exercises off to the side for most of the session, Viney and Gus in a harness pulling weights up and down the boundary. AVD, Weideman, Chandler, Mitch Brown, Petty, Smith all working hard on a weights circuit that looked punishing. Melchum was in and out of routines, then doing laps, then disappeared into the gym. The last full ground contest was interesting, they are certainly looking sharp and energetic, they all look to be in great shape. But as this routine progressed I found it was a mix of the good and the average. Players at times missed targets, turning the ball over at worst or picked a poor option passing to a player that was clear but because the delivery was not to his advantage, too high or to the wrong side, defenders were able to make ground to intercept or punch the ball away. The other disturbing thing for me anyway was that I don’t believe I saw a goal kicked from beyond 25m in this exercise. Shots on the run from 35m missed, the few set shots from 35 to 40 looked like they missed as well. However Goody was watching this intently and seemed pleased with the play, he only pulled play up once and reset everyone because maybe there were players out of position? As I say the ball movement looks good but there was a lack of polish given the contest meter was at about 70% compared to game day but of course the coaches may be urging them to push their ball movement skills to their limits. Individual observations: LJ took a screamer on top of Jonesy, who ended up face planted in the turf but got up OK. He is moving very well and has clean hands. May and Lever on opposing sides were each standouts for their defences, May took a great pack mark, one handed, played on and passed off to an opponent unfortunately. TMac generally playing forward of centre, he did some nice things, he does seem to be moving better this year, still managed to get tackled, holding the ball when he took on one defender too many. What’s new? You always have your heart in your mouth when Tommy decides to take on the opposition with ball in hand. I think it was Rivers for the yellows who took on all comers from half back to sprint past 2 or 3 blues and deliver a pass to the forward pocket. Very impressive piece of play. Bradtke took a couple of nice pack grabs and competed well against Max at the centre ball ups, umpired by Jordon Lewis. He just might develop into something. He has always had skills and agility just seemed he needed to put on some muscle and learn to throw his weight around. Salem stood out as the link man when the yellows were transitioning the ball from defence to attack, he had a lot of it and I don’t think he made a false move all session. Best on ground today. Rosman took a good contested grab up forward for the blues and had a set shot from 45, it was close and no problem with the distance. That’s about it, sorry with half the guys in yellow and often on the other side of the ground I could not identify many of thee new guys. As I left most were doing goal kicking practice and the rehab guys were still busting their guts on the weights circuit. It was time to head off to Tooradin and lunch at the Jetty Cafe! The Vette never missed a beat

  8. Couldn't care less if you agree or this whole idea of "narrative" you keep pushing, that's simply what it is and is why the 'others didn't get booed' logic doesn't stack up. You've just further made my point for me by bringing up Betts & O'Loughlin. Long and Goodes' scenarios are not really similar. You may want to look into the response Long got at first though, including death threats mailed to him. Doesn't seem you're really THAT up on the story mate. Plus there's the fact he was combating onfield racism and was strongly supported by the AFL. Wasn't exactly the same with Goodes hey? Winmar had a poignant moment after being racially abused for a whole day in horrendous ways. Not at all similar to Goodes who was booed more intensely after winning Australian Of The Year and having numerous public appearances totally misrepresented by the media. Let's not forget that Eddie said Goodes would have been treated better if he had 'given some warning' before doing his goal celebration; an Indigenous dance taught to him by Indigenous kids, after he (an Indigenous man) had just kicked an Indigenous ball through for a goal while wearing an Indigenous jumper in Indigenous round... Stop making excuses for others and clearly yourself.

  9. Fair comment, but I was dissappointed in Jason Mifsuds comments this morning. He is/was part of the AFL machine and noted Buddy and Cyril weren't booed, even though Goodes was, and this somehow demonstrates that Goodes was personally the problem, not his colour. This is a disgrace from Mifsud given his own heritage and the widely-accepted veiws that Goodes' probelm was that he spoke out on indigenoius matters, and if there's anything racists hate its an indigenous person having an opinion and god forbid expressing it - as Goodes did courageously on many occasions, and rightly so. Buddy and Cyril were quiet on this issue thus not attracting the vitroil. Mifsud owes Goods and apology. The headline notes he is an indigenous "leader" . - really?

  11. It really is a shame a report into and to address the problem of racism in the football club somehow became all about Eddie. I'm sure victims of racism, past, present and future, would like to know what the club intend to do about what the report found and the recommendations it made. Eddie has hogged the limelight for long enough.

  12. It’s not great news but at least it’s early Feb, we still have T Mac (who’s super fit with a point to prove), Mitch Brown, Jackson and a stack of other mid and small forward options. We’re better when we’re not drinking our own bath water. It’s not over yet. In fact, the season’s not yet even started. And we’re not Collingwood.

  13. Really sad for Sam, he will miss a fair chunk of the season along with BBB, however it opens the door for TMac, Mitch Brown, Luke Jackson and Harrison Petty, we now have the cattle to cover injuries and get on with the season proper. No time to mope it's time to crack in and show us what you have got. BBB and Sam do what you need to do to get yourselves right for the second half of the season and the finals boys, don't feel sorry for yourselves feel sorry for the teams that have to play us.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. "Worked bloody hard to become an AFL footballer" is what I think you meant to say. Lumumba was born close to a port where his ancestors were brought as slaves. He moved across the world at age 3 and adopted a different first name so that it was easier for the kids at school. He's copped way way worse then "Chimp" at Collingwood. Maybe put in some research that isn't fed to you by Rupert, especially given it's now known there were journalists who completely made up quotes and attributed them to him in search of clicks and attention. He's also dealt with depression. Yeah. So privileged. I strongly suggest reading this article: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-12-05/heritier-lumumba-strength-in-african-culture-collingwood-afl/12820942

  15. Personally I don't want to see Petty up forward, let him settle into the role he's been training for down back. I think we harmed Joel Smith's development significantly by constantly swapping him between forward and back. I'd rather have Fritsch and M.Brown out of the goalsquare, with T.Mac and Jackson roaming between half forward and wing.

  17. The sad thing is that for many people, the booing and the controversy is how they’ll remember Goodes, rather than his remarkable football feats and the superstar of the game that he was. Nicky Winmar is much the same - he’s said in interviews that he understands how the incident at Vic Park is an iconic moment in football history - there’s even a statue of it - but for him, it’s just a reminder of the worst day of his life.

  18. A local update ~ Kurt Mutimer leaves Casey Demons, heads to Narre Warren In this report for the Leader Newspapers, Paul Amy says that while 2020 recruit Kurt Mutimer, formerly of West Coast, has left the Casey Demons and returned to his original club Narre Warren, the club gains a like for like midfielder Zac Foot, who is coming off two years on the Sydney Swans list. The club has retained experienced trio Jack Hutchins (closing in on 100 games), Mitch White and James Munro (already a centurion). Others back this season are Tom Freeman, Mitch Lewis, Nick Lowden, Aidan Quigley and Cory Stockdale while Cory Machaya, who suffered a knee injury ahead of the 2019 season, is back in training. The club’s talented 2019 NAB League signings, Riley Baldi, Andrew Courtney, and Corey Ellison, Luca Goonan and Ryan Sparkes are all back on deck. The Demons expect to have a VFL list of between 20 and 25 players with access to the Gippsland Power and Dandenong Stingrays squads when they need top-ups. Three Melbourne NGA players Deakyn Smith, Kobi George and Ryan Koo Kwet Kim will all be over age players at the Stingrays (Smith is training with the AFL Demons).

  20. Skinny, WAP was an ALP policy and there is no denying it. Secondly, The British policy was to protect Aboriginal people from harm as much as possible at the time. To kill a “native” was punishable by death in the 18thC and beyond. I am an Australian history buff and I won’t have it re- written by morons.

  21. That's just arrant nonsense: Goodes was booed because he wouldn't play the passive Aboriginal game, because he raised his hand and said enough is enough, because he was brave enough to simply be himself. The bottom line is that Australia was founded by a Racist White Supremacist country called Britain, and it has always behaved accordingly. It only stopped practicing the White Australia Policy less than 50 years ago, and it's policies against so called Boats are an extension of that mind-set.

He comes across as a bit of a merchant banker but it doesn't mean he doesn't have a case, it doesn't mean he wasn't subjected to the abuse he says he has. Take the personality out of it and look at the issue. ...and as for the aboriginal friends and understanding how racism works, I think you only truly know if you walk in their shoes.

  23. A fair point. He also ranked 10th in the league for marks inside 50 per game. But my main issue with Sam is his intensity and effort. That's to say his lack of it. A huge issue for us last season was our woeful pressure inside 50 and out inability to keep it trapped there. In our really bad losses (i'm thinking Port, Freo, Swawns and Dogs) the opposition just waltzed the ball out of our defence and up the field with ease. Sure Weed is a big (pardon the tautology) and i read about his struggles, but he had only had six tackles for the season. Six. The most he had in a single game was 2 against the crows. And i'm pretty sure of those six, maybe one or max two were in the last 5 games or so, when our season was on the line and you'd expect him to be at his most desperate. Compare that to Port's Todd Marshall, who i reckon is a pretty fair comparison: One year younger, drafted the year after Sam, ten fewer games, similar position, a touch taller, a touch lighter and both top 20 picks (16 to Sam's pick 9). And he played almost the same number of games in 2020 (14 to Sam's 13). Todd Marshall had 35 tackles for the 2020 season. Nearly six times more than Sam. Marshall had the 18th most tackles inside 50 per game of any player in the AFL in 2020. It is also worth noting that its not as if the other bigs at Port were not pulling their weight on the tackle front. Dixon had 18 (and Rozee, who to be fair is a mid size forward at 175 cm, had 16). To be fair to Sam 83% of his tackles were inside 50. The problem is he only had six tackles in total

"Ever since I went public in 2017 with my experience, I've been consistent in saying that I initially went along with the nickname and a lot of other racist behaviour in order to fit in," he tweeted. "The document is proof that the nickname did indeed exist and was widely known in the club. "Some people are trying to use it as a means to discredit me, without realising that it's damning evidence that works against CFC and the AFL.' Says it all, P2J: you and the Cranky are peas from the same pod, in other words, you just don't get how racism works. 28. Luci, I would think that based on public knowledge of events past, the vast majority of people would say that Eddie had to go - that the Club would now be better off without him. And the realization of that fact, given the size of his ego, must be such a humiliating, devastating and earth shattering awakening for Eddie, you have got to wonder how this will affect his mental health. I hope he has close friends and family supporting him in this regard. Given that we have all got what we had hoped for - and we have had our say on the matter - perhaps its now time to be more considerate of his state of mind - there is no honour in kicking a man when he is down.

  29. Pinched this from a physio website. "The femur, as the largest bone in the body, has dozens of muscle origins and insertions, making it prone to stress injury at several locations. Stress injury denotes gradual structural compromise due to training overload. Stress fractures may be incomplete or complete, and either non-displaced or displaced. Femoral neck stress fractures are considered high-risk for complications, particularly displacement; whereas, femoral shaft stress fractures are low-risk. "Stress fractures occur in bones that undergo mechanical fatigue. They are a consequence of exceeding repetitive submaximal loads, which creates an imbalance between bone resorption and bone formation. The fractures usually begin in locations of great stress; this is called “crack initiation”. If this microscopic crack is not able to heal and is subjected to further loading, the microdamage will increase and the crack will enlarge. This increase in damage can cause the bone to break on a macroscopic level." Then I saw this (gulp) : "Return to full sport can normally be achieved between 3 and 6 months after injury, though this can require up to a year if not longer." ON THE BRIGHTER SIDE it also said patients could be off crutches and increasing weight bearing after six to eight weeks.

  33. Seeing that few of us are going to be around to see the 2021 MFC Team of the Century named and that this month is usually the silly season of the AFL, I am calling for nominations. The century is a fifth old so theoretically that means four or five players. Unless of course you think that we are going to be so good in the future that none of our current players will get in. By the way, it's snowing here!

  34. Agreed; public comments need to be utilised with caution. Eddie has presented our own 'Donald J. Trump' clone over many years of self-serving comment, acquired but unfounded credibility, insult, attention and media focus (for what may come next). His history at The Filth has good points and less than noble points - regardless, the footballing public benefitted from his endeavours.

  37. Two separate discussions to me: 1. Do we need to bring in a ready to go key forward? Maybe. At this stage I'd lean towards no with T Mc projecting to be better and M. Brown as well. Especially if they initial indications on B. Brown are positive. If B. Brown is looking more like missing months than just weeks then that changes the equation. 2. Should we look at McCartin. Nope. Just way too many concussions IMO. Poor guy should move on to his next phase in life.
    2 points
  38. Why would it even be a consideration? We already have too many key forwards. Even with those 2 injured one of LJ, TMac, and MBrown will most likely miss out. Not to mention Petty (if fit) could fill in for a few weeks in a pinch. 6 key forward options on the list is more than enough. Missing our 2 first choice keys isn't good but it's not like we need to pick up another.

  39. It s a bit of a cop-out to support Eddie now that he has gone. challenge-the-behaviour-support-the-individual-indigenous-leader-backs-mcguire It would have been far more courageous if it had come a week ago. Not necessarily to change the outcome but to put a bit more perspective into the media talk.

  40. No need to panic Demonland, keep calm and throw the big fella Petty forward, its his time to shine with Action and Tmac in support. Rather this happen now and we can plan for it rather than during the season where we would be well and truely fcukd.

  41. Exactly. It's ok to admit you don't know enough or haven't done enough walking in someone else's shoes but to pretend you do or claim you get it perfectly is what riles people up. Eddie's words of "We are not a racist club, never have been and are far from it". It's just uneducated hogwash and no-one wants to hear it anymore.

  42. Yes thankfully we kept Tom. We are now looking at Tommy, Petty, Mitch Brown and Luke Jackson as key forwards, aligned with Fritsch, Tracc, Melchum as mid sized forwards with Spargo, Kossie, Nibbler as crumbers.... it’s not the end of the world if our midfield dominance continues into 2021 and you know we get that connection between mids and forwards functioning.

  43. I think the real key from these drills is to get the players to present and give the ball carrier multiple options hopefully within 20 to 25m. Most of our players should be able to deliver a low trajectory pass to a target 20m away, surely. One of our deficiencies I believe in recent years has been players not presenting ahead of the ball carrier coming out of defence, hence the long bomb or hopeful 45m speared pass that gets intercepted. There are only 2 or 3 guys in any side that can deliver this miracle pass onto a team mate’s chest. So you need multiple options, short, long or wide. That was the great value Langdon brought to us last year, he always positioned himself on the wing to be a sideways option for the ball carrier. That made us a much better side and we needed the same on the other wing. It gives the ball carrier confidence to take on the opposition, knowing they will always have an outlet thru Langdon. If you can get others to always provide escape options, ball carriers will take the game on more and more. That’s my theory anyway.

  44. I still reckon we should make the 8 at the least. We didn’t have B Brown last year and Weid was in the 2’s for the first 6 weeks (I think) so we’re pretty much as you were and we should have played finals last year. A leaner TMac to find some form, LJ to continue his development and Fritsch to bring his shooting boots. Petracca to chip in. Maybe Maxy bobs up with a few. Midfielders to deliver half decent ball and we should be ok. We won’t be blowing teams away but we should still win more than we lose. B Brown will be back and should be hitting his straps by rounds 6-8 and we’re in business. The danger now is we do exactly what Kane Cornes said we would do, let our heads drop, lose winnable games early and have to play catch-up for the season.

  45. So you think 1 of 2 untried 18/19 year olds who were not drafted would be slotted in round 1 and make the difference? How many slots do we have available and what would stop us listing one now? This is not preferred but better these happen now than half way through the season if they occur. Or we could just not be conservative and grind them both in the ground for round 1 and have them useless 3 rounds in? .Lucky we retained TMac and he is in good shape. Lucky we retained M Brown. I wonder if they look at pivoting Petty forward?
