  1. Amazing tank. Good long distance speed. Like ANB and JKH in that respect, and given its importance to our game plan, it's an attribute our coaching team rate. Very well liked, great team man. Unsure how that translates to leadership. Can play 3rd KPF or KPD, can punch hit in the ruck, but most successful position has been wing. Would be fine playing with Lever and May as the third defender. Best 12? Possibly. Best 10-15? Definitely. Personally, I think his versatility would make him one of the first picked, even if you have 10-15 players ahead of him on skill. We don't have many players who can successfully switch around the field, giving us cover for match day injuries but also at selection.

  2. He's coming, will be done and circumstances in which he's leaving won't see them holding us to ransom. There may be semantics but pick 21 or whatever it ends up being

  3. You're kidding, surely. As if those comments from goody would have any impact whatsoever on Elliott's asking price. That's up there with thinking Tomlinson's game against the lions would be factor in the decision to recruit him. Double sheesh.

  4. I hope a few here listened closely to Fyfe's acceptance speech where he thanked supporters and noted strongly how important it is for players to receive positive support as motivation, help at times when things weren't going that well. They really appreciate it. Imagine what it would be like for our players if all our 52,000 supporters relentlessly bagged the players 20 times a day, every week of the year, like some do here on Demonland. There's a difference between constructive and relentlessly aggressive negative criticism. Everyone knows the club didn't perform well this year, and it was a huge disappointment from 2018, but Fremantle didn't exactly set the world on fire either. I can't see how relentless negativity helps make average players better, and good players great. It would be like playing under a dark cloud every time you stepped over the white line.

  5. Someone always ruins a thread on Demonland, by bringing logic to the argument. Well said WR

  6. Add these blokes to the list of 'worthless' captains... Easton Wood (0 votes) Tom Jonas (0 votes) Ben Stratton (0 votes) Witts (1 vote) Geary (1 vote) Walker (2 votes) Hurn (3 votes) Heppel (3 votes) J Selwood (3 votes) P Davis (3 votes) Ron Barassi... In the two seasons he won the Demons' best-and-fairest award, 1961 and 1964, he managed only 10 votes from the umpires.

  8. Let them perish. It’s a dumb idea. Two teams in a Rugby League state. The AFL is run by money hungry morons who are wrecking the game. Next we’ll have a team based in China or Sierra Leone.

  9. And if Goody had been lukewarm Elliott might have said "they aren't really interested". You're just looking for reasons to criticize. I don't think Bin is naive.

  12. Amazing acceptance speech by Fyfe......Very impressive human & sounds like an even more impressive captain. Didn't throw anyone under the bus & acknowledged a couple of players who assisted in him playing his natural game. If I was in charge at the MFC, I would be dropping everything to acquire Fyfe of someone with similar traits & beliefs to change our culture & lead our boys. It all starts at the top.

  13. Not sure I agree as you could apply that kind of logic to any scenario. Going to the draft - Goodwin's rebuilding, he's admitted defeat! Going for a superstar - Goodwin's putting all his eggs in one basket, saviour syndrome again! Going for depth - He's gambling with our future! Bit of a no-win situation for him when people adjust the narrative to suit their own bias.

  14. No offence intended Lucifer but I get really frustrated with these kinds of glib disparaging statements about the club and its players. People seem to constantly misunderstand how much of skill execution, particularly under pressure, is in the head. We didn't just spend 3 years in a linear progression only to fall off a cliff this year because we don't have any skillful players. We played and won 2 finals games last year and fell in a heap against a side we beat 3 weeks before. Our skill didn't vanish in that 3 weeks or evaporate. Nor could we have gotten into the prelim without skillful players. What happened was mostly mental, coming off the back of some initial tactical errors. Our skills actually deteriorated this year as we fell further into a hole. That began because of the million reason that have been explored on DL ad nauseum, but it continued, and got worse because of loss of confidence and the inability of whoever does our sports psychology to help the players to refocus on the now rather than get drowned in negative self talk (christ I sound like a new age pop psychologist but hopefully my meaning is clear). We don't have a bunch of unskilled nuffies, we have some excellent players and some fairly decent role players and some gaps like most teams. When they lose their confidence they stop playing instinctively and start making rudimentary errors because they are over thinking things. That got us in spades this year, you could see it every time we got in front of goal. We went from one of the most accurate, high scoring teams, to one of the most inaccurate and low scoring ones. Because of confidence. Interestingly richmond turned this around in one year, in no small part due to a new mindfulness coach.

  15. Rubbish. What are we giving up to get these guys in? We're not mortgaging our future for these guys, we don't even have to give up draft picks for Tomlinson or Elliott. Plus we have a list manager to keep an eye on TPP's, it's not as if Goodwin is dictating to the entire FD on every trade and contract negotiation.

  16. I watched a replay of the Melbourne v GWS from last year. Tomlinson played really well and some of his kicks were flat 40m bullet like. The ones that are saying they'd much rather frost then Tomlinson are the same clueless ones over and over.

  18. How dare the coach be honest in the media and reflect the true status of negotiations/decision making. The horror. Elliott's clearly got options, we've got interest but sounds like we aren't going to offer him stupid money and he might chose another option. Realistic. The worst possible media relations outcome for this trade period is that we don't sign any players and get a reputation like North. Tempering fan expectations with free agents who have full control over their destiny is perfectly reasonable.

  19. A few things stuck out for me last night. Firstly, Fyfe is an extraordinary talent but is also just as impressive off the field. When he spoke about preparation and dedication to the 'craft' of leadership, it was hard not to reflect on where we're at as a club in respect to this. Secondly, he was number 20 in the draft. His journey was not a simple one but it reinforces that the elite of our game are not often the number one draft picks. Finally, what I wouldn't give for us to find an out and out midfield star like him....just one in my lifetime.

  20. Just a hunch but it wouldn't shock me if Willie was more towards the regular than infrequent user. I still think he's an idiot not a drug cheat and therefore should get the punishment for an idiot and not the punishment for a drug cheat. Dodging the test now appears more sinister - as he had something to hide, but also less sinister as all he was hiding was some weed.

  21. With Malthouse it was a baseless 'herd mentality' in advance of any of his proteges achieving anything. Few ever would and are no longer senior coaches: Neeld, Sanderson, B. Scott. Buckley may be the exception. Some clubs were silly enough to take the hype and Malthouse's unabashed promotion of those proteges, seriously. With Clarkson the plaudits are coming after his proteges have the runs are on the board. Some will fail eg Bolton but he has a very good batting average. Chalk and cheese situations.

  22. Let us say that Nathan Fyffe is a truly worthy Brownlow medallist as were those close to his tally i.e Paddy Dangerfield, Patrick Cripps and Tim Kelly. The rest of this is pure sour grapes and vindictiveness.

  23. Randwick wasn't too bad in the end WWS. Brilliant win by Avillius. Needs it at least soft i reckon. The best horse in the county in my opinion, but clearly does not like firm ground, If the cox plate is soft i reckon he's close to a good thing. I can see him sitting wide and sweeping over the top with the camber to win going away. had a funny day. Ended up not backing be good to ya mum. Just felt it was a bit short. Kicking myself given my comments about its weight advantage and historical edge. Actually backed three long shorts, including Widgee turf (win only). All three ran well but no cigar

  26. I think it’s interesting that Patrick Cripps was on course to win the Brownlow until Teague came along and changed the way Carlton played bringing more players to the fore who ultimately took votes away from him.

  29. Best 12: No. Might finish close to that in the B+F (play all 22 and by default you should finish at least top 16 with standard injury/form of others) but not on talent. Finished 7th in a tight field last year in the Giants B+F which is a surprise but otherwise no top 10 finishes- I think all their injuries would've had him far lower on a per game basis. Decision making: Solid enough but usually takes the safe options Key tall at either end: Very much doubt it. Doesn't seem to have a good leap, power or bust off the mark, nor is he a super tall 198+ type - at 194cm he's more an oversize mid. His marking is poor for his size but he's still damn tall for a wing. Excellent tank allowing him to play wing, back up ruck or if needed on a flank Not sure about leadership but certainly a flawless clubman who does a lot of media for the Giants. If not a leader he'll be a good follower. Lack of speed is my biggest concern if the comp keeps heading the way the Tigers have taken it. Suddenly he goes from a good utility who can play wing and/or 2nd ruck to a bit of a nothing player (especially if teams start playing a pair of 200cm+ specialist rucks). That's why he was dropped for the Giants first final but he was also bought back in to do a job after the Giants lost Deledio through injury.

  39. Tomlinson>ANB, Stretch, Wagners, JKH, OMac, T.Smith, Lewis, KK, vB, Petty and more. It's an improvement for us. That's all that matters. Not every recruit has to be "elite".

  40. We’ve also got a lot of very average to below average players who are regularly getting a game. Let’s start replacing those ones whilst there are replacements available for free, then snaffle a very good player when one pops up, maybe Whitfield end of next season?

  41. This is what I like about it. If we were to land Tomlinson, Langdon and Elliott during this trade period, then we've improved our best 22 immensely. It will make us a much better side going forward.

  42. Tomlinson is better than our bottom 6-8 in the best 22 we have at the moment i think, therefor,e if you can make that group stronger you do it.

  43. 26 years old and a restricted free agent. Drafted in 2011 so 8 years on the GWS list by trading time. Approximately half our list isn't up to it (or unproven) and if our only cost is salary cap space then we acquire him if he wants to come to us. We can get 5-6 years of football out of the bloke and we get to add another decent player to the list. Do it times 3 if other restricted free agents are available. Why stop at one? Our list needs an injection of talent. Think of Tomlinson as replacing a player who we're going to delist anyway. It's a no-brainer really.
