  1. Jackovich is streets ahead of Green 'WERRIDEE' and to be honest if we had these forward riches I would slip him into FF & then have the luxury of Neitz going back to his best position at CHB. I would then bring Jurrah into the pocket to replace Green. Farmer, Jackovich & Jurrah would be the most freakish FF line of all time.

  3. In fairness to Darren Bennett. He was a classical full forward in the days when there were many classical full forwards such as Lockett, Ablett and Dunstall. Their game was to lead and to expect and receive good service from their teammates up the ground and kick goals from set shots. At that time, the service to Bennett was garbage - passes over his head, passes that dropped short, passes to where he wasn't and many other insults to his role as a leading full forward (seems that nothing has changed in 30 years). Nevertheless in one season he kicked over 80 goals and was more than competitive. His kicking style was simple and effective - good balance, controlled ball drop and high follow through (Weideman reminds me of his style). Served him well when he won a kicking competition and received a pass to try out in the NFL where he made a successful career as a punter. Sadly his game was one dimensional. That Jakovich could kick bags of goals from any position as a leading full forward or as a cunning goalsneek made life difficult for Bennett. In all my time following the dees he was by far the best classical full forward I have seen (Neitz was not so classical, more flexible and versatile and capable of playing in many positions although no less effective).

  4. He's not got indigenous blood... This article might clear thing up. https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/port-coach-mark-williams-great-great-grandad-was-a-slave/news-story/d3160104373d807e83716d8cd455a489

  5. Bennett better than Neitz! Many say Neitz played his best football as a defender. He certainly played much of his early career there and yet his career average is 2.1 goals per match. Bennett a forward averaged 2.8 Bennet never won the Coleman medal, Neitz did. Bennett's best was 4th then 10th and 10th in the Coleman. Neitz 1st, 3rd, 3rd, 5th and 9th Bennett 78 games - Neitz 306 Bennett's accuracy career 215goals 152 behinds, Neitz 631goals, 368 behinds. Neitz for me, plus he was hard, players feared being hit by Neitz not so much Bennett.

  6. Salute to the greatest political slogan I can remember. I believe Singleton came up with it for Labor's 1972 campaign which broke their 23 year electoral drought. Drought breaking hit an obvious nerve for a lifelong Dees supporter. When I chose it in about 2007 I thought we were entering the new era that was going to break our drought and I didn't expect it to be relevant for more than a few years. Oh well. Will gladly replace it when it becomes redundant. Although by then it will be relevant to the 2 peat and then the 3 peat etc. The slogan and it's success had some significant impacts on my families lives. My brother had just been advised he was going in the next lottery for conscription to the Vietnam war. Whitlam won the election and immediately stopped conscription which probably saved my brother going there. He also brought in free tertiary education which I benefited directly from. That slogan heralded in one of the craziest political periods in our history. A breathtaking series of political reforms such as the Marriage Act and land rights and economic madness like the Khemlani affair and Junie Morosi. Who'll ever forget Al Grassby. Ahh they were the days. All leading to our greatest political crisis. What a slogan. My avatar succinctly sums me up. We were born on the same day. Not the same year though. I got the clown bit without the genius bit but hopefully a healthy sense of the absurd. Other less kind people might say I got the absurd without anything else. Anyhow..... It's Time.

  9. I reckon Nev Jetta has future coach written all over him. seems a great communicator and likes helping people get the best out of themselves, as witnessed by his contribution to many causes in the community. he's also got the grit. after some early challenges in his career, he's had to to pick himself up, dust himself off, work hard and rise up above the rest. he knows what it takes. he's a pretty impressive package is our Nev.

  11. A close friend part-owned a racehorse called Dan Zephyr. I was previously Demon77 and was looking to change my display name early last year. The name Dee Zephyr was suggested to me by another member on here and I thought it was fitting as the horse was going through a long drought of over two years without a win. A week or two after changing my name the horse comes out and wins his last ever race to end the drought. The name stays until the main drought is over.

  12. From an episode of the Beverly Hillbillies in which the Hollywood actor Dash Riprock’s (aka Homer Noodleman) friend and fellow actor Crunch Hardtack impressed Jethro so much that he decided to give himself the stage name of Beef Jerky... for some reason Hardtack seemed like a pretty good name to have.

  13. Yeah, I get a bit annoyed about whole separate streams of development and 'special programs' and the like in a lot of situations, but this is one where it makes sense. And importantly, has a sunset to it - once it succeeds in the goal of normalising the idea of Indigenous people being coaches, it'll wind down naturally. In a professional community as small as AFL-level coaching, personal contacts make all the different. Because of the legacy of separation, because of the competing priority of supporting your community (e.g. Neville Jetta) and because many indigenous players emerge from comparatively remote places (the article notes "... trips to the Northern Territory, Cairns and regional Western Australia to target those who typically aren't exposed to leading coaching strategies "), the direct personal connections aren't going to be as strong. Plus, somehow still, there are little bits of creeping racism which can really stink up efforts at networking. Networking is particularly vulnerable to pissy little low-key racist exclusion. All it takes is just a couple of soft-racist types to do some moaning about how "such-and-such is only getting an interview because we want to look politically correct" or "that guy is only at this event to make up the diversity numbers" and an Indigenous prospective coach is having their credibility and worthiness questioned by people who would otherwise not blink at giving them a chance. Even quite earnestly not-racist people can be influenced by the grumbling of someone they respect, particularly because the actual racial motive might be all but invisible, so to anyone listening it just sounds like a colleague making an honest observation. So that's the lay of the land, but with the momentum for change now, through the likes of Davey and Whelan and Jetta, it really should just be a matter of time. I'd understand if you still find it irritating, but at least take comfort knowing it is a temporary effort that'll just straight-out solve this particular problem in the long run.

  14. Maximum Bob here. My display name is taken from one of America's finest crime writers - Elmore Leonard. His 1991 novel features Judge Bob Gibbs aka Maximum Bob, so named because his sentences were so harsh. Many Demonlanders have display names that are pretty obvious in origin but I've often wondered how some of the more esoteric originated or what they refer to. Feel free.

  15. May have been done but just want to put out there the players that will make a name for themselves ( in a premiership team)! 4 categories Experienced Player (6-10 years) Stephen May On the path player(s) ( 4-6 years) KK and Weeds will have a stellar year. Young Stallion player (1-4 years) Tom Sparrow and Baker Mystery man player Vandy, the bull will destroy all in his path. Petracca also as this needs to be his year.

  16. Probably done before at some stage but here is my dream forward line : Farmer Jakovich Neitz Lyon Schwartz Jurrah Couldn't fit in some greats here, such as Norm Smith and others like Robbo and Darren Bennett and can't yet find a place for current players. Not sure whether Fred Fanning should be on some sort of forward line interchange with others.

  19. Just a bit of further info on the barrier records for the MM 2YO Classic - the last 10 years 2009: 9 - 6 - 3 - 7 2010: 3 - 13 - 5 - 2 2011: 7 - 14 - 9 - 3 2012: 2 - 3 - 7 - 5 2013: 2 - 10 - 3 - 11 2014: 3 - 6 - 2 - 1 2015: 3 - 12 - 6 - 11 2016: 2 - 3 - 1 - 7 2017: 16 - 9 - 1 - 11 (Houtzen was the winner) 2018: 12 - 16 - 5 - 13 (Sunlight was the winner) By the way, gun sprinter 'Houtzen' is the $1.85 favourite for the MM Sprint ($1Million) on Saturday. And the horse that ran 2nd last year from barrier 16 is called 'Hello Beauty' ... started at 100-1 and now races out of HK. It has only had the 1 start up there and may have incurred an injury. The 10 year sample size shows that it is tough to even get into the finish from a wide barrier but it's interesting that we have 2 classy gallopers that have drawn an outside gate this time ... after the final field is settled 'Yes Yes Yes' will run from gate 16 whilst 'Unite And Conquer will run from the 14 alley. Another good performer in 'Hightail' will run from barrier 15. I can envisage an absolute mad scramble for that first 200m straightaway from the barriers until they start that long 600m bend to the 400m straight. Those caught wide without cover will find it hard to sprint down that 400m straight. Especially if it's a truly run affair.

  21. One must wonder how unstoppable the Tulip actually was - I don't think he was ever an aggressor on the field, just a bloody talented footballer with class and application to burn. Yet, Matthews was in my best 3 footballers of all time. Tulip, Matthews and Blight. The Ox is No. 4, pre-first knee injury. Great memories, all of this posting - but pointless to scale footballers across the 50 years of associated daydreams. However, I remain very excited about the young Kobe Farmer coming to the Dees in years to come - the Wizard also had it all in teams that failed to deliver to elicit his complete talents. Maybe Kobe can make up for that when the time is ripe.

  23. Nice, I’m liking ‘Dubious’, ‘Rome’ is going in as well for the exotics if it gains a run. We could get the weekend going on a good note, El is racing Friday night at Cranbourne, drawn out in Casey Fields (13), carrying 60.5kg and stepping up to 1300m, what could possibly go wrong?

  32. Easy to take post shots at the guy. Will remain a favourite even in freo colors. Gave us hope when we needed it. Hard trainer off field coming back in great condition at the start of the last preseason and was leading b and f or close before injury. Can't doubt his commitment to the club and hasn't broken any laws. We have all been on a bender in the past and good luck to him what he does during his break as long as mentally he is ok

  33. We have had some of the best players to ever set foot on the park who are indigenous. Yet there has never been an indigenous head coach at AFL level. Approx 10% of players are indigenous, we have 3 indigenous assistant coaches at present. Confused as to why people would see promotion of a pathway to develop indigenous coaches as an issue or be “annoyed” by it.

  39. From the revival in 1987 until today, I agree that this group of 6 is the best combination of pure skill, talent and footy smarts. The tragedy is that only one (Neitz) played a full career at the dees without injury or other mishap. I weep when I recall the lost opportunity that, excluding only Jurrah, the rest could have been playing together in the nineties if not for injury to Jakovich, Lyon and Schwarz. Balme's time as coach was blighted by their injuries (as well as G Lovett, Tingay, Prymke). Placing them in the best combination in their best positions would be a nightmare. But Jakovich must play at full forward. The rest can play anywhere.

  43. A few years back when my son was coming through the ranks with cricket, he was asked by one of his coach's if he could help him out for a couple of days (feeding the bowling machine mostly) with a young bloke who was coming down to Tassie for some intensive training as he didn't have a Big bash contract yet, I've taken him there & we were introduced to a lovely young bloke named Marcus Harris, of course it did't take long for the small talk to get around to footy & our mutual love of the mighty Melbounefc. We have followed him ever since & hope to see him break through with a big score soon & that he represents our country for a long time with the mighty red & blue in his heart.

  48. I was on a diving trip in West Papua a few weeks ago and we made a stop at a remote island called Banda Island. I have been there before and always take along a bag of school supplies for the kids. To my shock and delight there were two mischievous little boys at the port in Melbourne Demon T-shirts. Admittedly they were pretty well worn and had seen better days and I asked one of them if he knew what the emblem was. He looked at me like I was stupid and said ‘Go Dees’. He didn’t know where the T-shirts had come from and they looked as though they had been handed down several times. I was so chuffed as most of the other passengers on the boat were from Perth and WCE supporters. Didn’t see any of their T-shirts. Made a mental note to bring along half a dozen next year when I go back.
