We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Don't think the FD have necessarily chosen one over the other Kent.

Probably more likely match ups and they want to give Disco as much exposure as they can at AFL level to get used to the step up plus try and start gelling with May, Lever etc in order to have him as ready as possible if needed for finals.

Again if match ups warrant or one of Lever or Tomo go down (spit spit ...dashes salt shaker over shoulder)

He was also in vn form against the Lions so he put his hat in the ring.

I agree with much of this.  I think Tomlinsons card has been pretty-well marked, getting dropped after playing well etc.

I suspect Laurie may be in the same boat too, given the way he has been managed.

Disco is clearly the future and giving him as much exposure as possible will only help his development (I believe Disco means "to learn" in Latin).

This match is potentially a zero-sum game for us.  We obviously don't want to play Brisbane up there, but I'm not afraid of the Pies at home, or Port.  May be more important to get through it without injuries.

People saying the outcome doesn't matter.

We have to and should win. Regardless of other outcomes. We need to go into games against Brisbane or Collingwood with a win. A loss just gives them added mental benefit. Need to shut down the crowds early and quickly.

I have always imagined that the good teams always expect and play to win.

Sensible supporters likewise.

It's not that difficult to understand.

After losing the team look for positives and supporters can please themselves

Only a mental benefit if you are trying desperately to win on a personal level, perhaps failing to take into account what is useful/functional for the team overall - in which case the dissonance, and the distress is diminished.

I dont think he has proved this at AFL level  where he is below average in key stats Tommo is average or above

Still think its a risky move at this stage of the season

Tommo is clearly better than Turner at both VFL and AFL Look at the stats!! He may be the future but Tommo is the present

Turner hasn’t played enough for stats to mean anything at all. KOd halfway through his first game, having started very well, and grossly mismatched in his second.
80% of stats are flawed and the other 40% are wrong. 🙄

Who is "they"?  Are you saying that Collingwood (not the AFL) decide which day they play their first final?

Well …..?

Every week, an AFL  player misses a game with concussion. As Jaded said, for the sake of a change to a Friday night it takes it out of the equation.  How concerned will you be if Trac gets concussed tomorrow and can't play first final?

We would have to ask the Port Dr to asses him

It also doesn't make commercial sense.

Surely more ppl will be able to get to a Friday night final vs a Thurs night and also watching as many won't have work the next day, kids can stay up .

Centrelink doesn’t count which day you don’t work so most Magpie fans will be able to get there.

It will be a sell out regardless of which night it is played.

Here’s one I came up with Malcolm was PM

Maybe Malcolm magnanimously mollifies mealy mouthed maggots momentarily, meanwhile motivates masked melodrama, making misadventures materialise magnificently

That addresses the "where" but not the "when".  I'm sure the AFL schedules the actual games.

Your example is also based on a COVID year where the MCG wasn't an option.

I still don't believe that any club can choose what day they play on.

And it can be seen as tampering, especially in this case when Collingwood can have two extra days of rest.

Fox have just announced the expected Coll vs Melb final will likely be on Thursday night. As was the case mid year, this means once again Melbourne will be the only team with a less than 12 day break,  meaning any concussed player will miss the next final. Why are we continually disadvantaged this way when it's not necessary?

I highly highly doubt this would be the case.

11th.

Whately discussed it and said it would be a scandal waiting to happen, if Dees had concussed players.

He also said the game should be on Friday anyway.

I think the players will give it 100%, and I think the coaches will expect them too and set that bar.

But a late out, or some extra minutes to certain players, or etc might not be off the cards. With Turner and Fritsch in for the first time, we have lots to experiment with.

Jon Ralph is very confidently reporting we’ll play Thursday night. If we get a concussion tomorrow I will literally riot Monday morning at AFL HQ.

If they schedule a match after a bye within the concussion period, it would make a mockery of the pre-finals bye and would rightly be met with outrage across the media.

It doesn't matter that it is Melbourne, a smaller club, it would be a brutal response from everyone I think.

If Port win tomorrow the outcome of our game will be academic. In that case we should at least ensure that Gawn, May, Lever, Petracca and maybe even Oliver get plenty of rest time on the bench. That's good player management, not tanking --- those on the field will still give of their best. If the AFL do pull a dirty trick on us, it would also minimise the chance of injury to our key players.

I'm not in the camp of his card being stamped just yet DR.

However, you may have hit on something here.

We now know there's nothing to be gained by winning this.  So just maybe the FD value Tomo more than some are thinking?

That is, Tomo is a key cog in releasing  Lever to play as the 3rd tall D and effect his preferred intercept role yes.

So we certainly don't want to risk an injury to Tomo at this point is one other explanation as to why we're playing Disco ahead of him in what is effectively a dead rubber (for us).

Can someone please explain the rationale for this? Surely the Brisbane game is the obvious choice? Brisbane last year on the Thursday night worked well so I just don’t understand the reasoning here. You’ll see a smaller crowd on Thursday night at the MCG.

The MCG will have close to 96,000 for QF Dee’s V Pies, any night of the week

That absolute stinks and is unfair.

However, Port, Carlton, GWS and Sydney also play on the Sunday so one of the 5 clubs including us was always going to draw the short straw in terms of a Thursday night final.

And secondly, it’s no different to someone getting concussed on prelim final weekend. The AFL aren’t going go to suddenly make any exemptions.

Why do we need to play any game on Thursday?

Friday, Sat day, Sat twilight, Sat night.
At least two finals will likely be interstate so it’s an easy solution.

It's Game Day and the Demons are once again headlining another blockbuster at the MCG to kick off the round of footy. The Dees take on the Blues and have the opportunity to win their third game on the trot to solidify a spot in the Top 4 in addition to handing the Blues their third consecutive defeat to bundle them out of the Top 8.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
