Absolutely love the pod boys but if you guys spend the first half hour telling us how good we are like on last week’s pod I’ll struggle to stay calm! We are very average unfortunately, but on the positive side I thought JVR, McVee and May were great. Max was huge in the last quarter of course.

To all our fabulous commentors and questioners; Feel free to ask questions about the Blues match but as the podcast is on Tuesday night this week please ask questions about the King's Birthday match too as we'll do an extended preview this week.

On the footy field, skills can be poor because they are executed badly, or skills can be poor because they are executed under pressure.

Was the Blues match a "high pressure" match or a "sloppy, low skilled" match? What statistics would guide/justify your assessment?

Or skills can be poor because of built up fatigue, or of course a combination of all 3.

Darcy Moore is a pivotal part of Collingwood’s backline and at almost 6 foot 8 he presents an imposing challenge for the Dees on King’s Birthday.

While he had a seemingly quiet game against the Blues, is there a case to have Joel Smith play a defensive forward role on Moore?

Read my mind. Thought Joel played a good role last night, echoed i reckon by Goody’s comments. He might be just the man to make the best defender in the game accountable. If not him, then who do you podcasters reckon might get the gig, and how?

Unfortunately there may be a bit of MRO discussion on the podcast. Feel free to sink the boots into Christian as required.

I think it'll be interesting to see if Tommo gets another gig. I like the third tall being there and Tommo didn't do a whole lot wrong. I wonder though, given his lack of mobility, would Turner be better against the filth? More mobile and suited to Collingwood's smaller KPF's Mihocek and Johnson). I think both would be ineffective against Cox.

I think Kozzie is an interesting talking point. He's averaging only 11 possessions a game and tonight only had three kicks. Sure he puts pressure on oppositions but IMO he's capable of much, much more.

At one point Kozzie flew for a speccie in front of MG when he could have stayed down for the spoils. This has been a repeating pattern, with KP continually preferencing goal of the year/ mark of the year. We are going nowhere until Melbourne gets back to tem first.

Despite having lower disposal efficiency and shooting at goal efficiency than the Baggers, we won virtually every other important statistic. If we can tidy up our kicking next week we'll be very hard to beat. Is anyone else having a half glass full approach to the "ugly" win?

Many Demonlanders have recognised the value of having Tommo in the team against Carlton, because it improved our defensive structure, and enabled our other defenders to play to their strengths.  The outcome was clear to all!
There has been less Demonland commentary about Joel Smith’s game against the Blues.  I thought his importance to our forward structure, was equal to that of Tommo’s down back. IMO, the role he played contributed significantly to the improved form of JVR and Fritta, and l see Joel as a ‘lock’ for KB.  What do the panel think?

This is the win we needed to scratch out the past 2 weeks.

Not pretty, but being at the game Blues never really looked like closing tgat gap.

Amazing how May looks back to his best which another tall down back, Tommo stays in for mine.

Also thought smith played an important role as more of a decoy than a key fwd, and I've never been a smith fan so it has taken a bit to say that.

I still think we are maybe playing 1 to many small forwards, thought?

This weeks talking points V Carlton

1.  It was a horrible game to watch.  So many turnovers.  So many mistakes.  Kane Cornes described it as “truly awful”.
Why?  Our skills to hit a target was missing.  Goalkicking was poor.  MFC were bad.  Carlton were simply worse.

2. Hunter and Langdon had good games but their possessions reflect our slow and wide ball movement.  Their heat map of possessions showed 8/10 were on the boundary edge. Defenders love to have restricted areas to cover and our forward 50s from out wide are easily cut off.  Can we play the corridor more from now on ?

3. Kozzzy.  We love him.  But 3 times flying into packs and not crumbing had me scratching my head.  Remember round 1.  Wow. If he gets back to that, we’ll be truly dangerous.

4. Three tall defenders. Tommo on Mckay. May on Curnow. Lever played his intercept role.  It showed as a better structure than Lever marking the 2nd tall forward.  Tommo to cover until Petty is back imv.

5.  Trac was clearly BOG. Three Brownlow votes.  Thats 17 votes for Trac already by my calculations if the umps have any idea. May, Riv, Sparrow, Mcvee, Salem, Fritta and Lever  (and Bowsa until concussed) as my other best players this week. Obviously a defenders game this week.

The game itself was average and a lot of people thought we were very poor. From my point of view there were some key things:

- We are missing key personnel from our structures

- We are clearly a bit down on confidence when it comes to execution and skill levels

- We are possibly increasing training loads and/or general fatigue has set in at this point in the season.

On the other side of the coin Carlton are going through many of the same things and for this reason I watched it with full expectation of a tight, scrappy, low scoring struggle with not too much fuss about perfect skills. I thought we did a lot of things well in this game, pressure levels were great, won clearances and smashed inside 50s.

Do you guys think the comments about this being a pathetic performance are harsh?

Interesting to hear the loading/fatigue discussion again in various threds. Especially interested in the sub theory that has emerged regarding our preference to revert to the % tactics (moving the ball around the flanks etc) has come back since the guys have been more fatigued. Think there is some merit to this but keen to hear everyone's thoughts on what sort of game style and freshness we will see on Monday!

Absolutely loving the podcast. Knocking them out of the park on a weekly basis. The analysis each weeks helps put the losses and the "ugly" wins into perspective.

Would love to get the panels thoughts on Joel Smith's game and whether they think the Dees will persist. Despite not really denting the stats sheet I thought he played his small part.

Just a reminder to all of our listeners that the Demonland Podcast will air LIVE Tomorrow (Tuesday) night and not Tonight (Monday). Next week's show will also be on Tuesday night as a result of our King's Birthday clash being on the Monday. Hopefully we will return to our regularly scheduled programming night after the Bye.

I love the podcast and I appreciate Binman’s positive take on virtually everything related to the Demons. But I’m not sure how I am going to cope with another dose of loading as the excuse for our very ordinary performances over the last few weeks.

You say excuses, i say factors - potato; potatoe.

But don't worry i won't be flogging that particular horse tomorrow night. Much.

But if you need some prophylactic pre pod protection, then you can get the full technicolor binman impact of fatigue thesis here

Defence wins finals. I am much happier giving away a lower score than other teams - like the cats, that played ping pong most of the night.  I think this was why Goody was rapt with the result and why I was very happy with what we did. The blues players went hard, but we went harder.  Still significant upside is available in our gameplan, in our key players and structures.  I think we will win against the pies due to our defence and pressure. I would welcome your insight into Collingwood’s defensive structures and how we should play to defeat them.  eg two extra at contests etc.

How do I best reconcile a loss or a tight win on Monday

a) Goodwin has no plan B

b) We're keeping our 'powder dry'

c) They had too many players out and it's not a true reflection of a proper 'test'

With thanks in advance... 😇

In all seriousness, I think it will be fascinating watch seeing two dichoitmous styles going head to head, summarised as 'all out attack' vs 'stingy grinding defence'.

Couple of big matchups in defence on Kings Birthday. The bigs Mason Cox, Ash Johnson & Brodie Mihocek. All 3 are have given us problems before. Pains me to say it but I’m worried the most about Cox. Who takes who?

We usually struggle against the Charlie Cameron/Tom Papley type small forwards. Who runs with Bobby Hill?

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
