Oooh, I feel like Werridee.

Here goes!

Jetta May Bowey

Lever Frawley Whelan

Langdon Oliver Yze

Lyon Schwarz Fritsch

Farmer Neitz K Pickett

Gawn Petracca J Viney

Stynes White Green Jones

Note, I was born in 1987, so don't remember Flower. Jackovich was great fun, but didn't play long enough. Loved T Viney's toughness, but like his son, his disposal was a killer. Bruce was a very dangerous player on his day. The Febeys and the McDonalds (Junior in particular) were good value, Tingay was solid, Jurrah was brilliant and Woey is unlucky not to make the list.

Omg, I forgot Flash!

Ok, I still feel bad, so here's my 3rd best XXII. This time I swear there will be no others. If you miss the cut here, bad luck!

FB: Bizzle, Shanahan, Hopgood

HB: Watts, Garland, M. Febey

C: Dyson, G. Lovett, Vince

HF: Grinter, Hogan, Harmes

FF: Fritsch, S. Smith, K. Pickett

FOLL: Jolly, Rigoni, Moloney

INT: Simmonds*, Sylvia, Walsh, Ward

*I suspect Grundy will surpass, however I'd like to see a season of him first.

I'll give it a go.

B:    Whelan      May              Wight

HB: B Lovett     Hardeman    A Johnson

C:   Alves          Wells            Flower

HF: Lyon           Shwarz         Yze

F    Farmer        Neitz            Fritsch

R:   Gawn         Oliver            Petracca

I/C:    Moore    B Wilson        Green

Can't believe I couldn't find a spot for Jimmy, Trav Johnstone, Tingay, Laurie Fowler, or Cam Bruce. They would be my emergencies.

Also, my interchange has 1 ruck, 1 midfield, 1 forward, 1 back.

And no other team of ANY era, would get a kick against that centre line. Pity both Alves and Wells left for success elsewhere.

I go back to the losing 1958 Grand Final which I watched with my 6 year old and four year old sister. I was 8, knew zilsch anout 'Footy'. As my daughter said not that long ago : Why do you always barrack for losers?

Fowler, Tas Johnson, May

Brett Lovett, Lyon, Hardeman

Alves, Mann, Flower

Green, Schwartz, Davey

Farmer, Neitz, Petracca

Gawn, Barassi, Oliver

Whelan, S.Smith, Stynes, Travis Johnstone, Dixon, Wight, Wilson, Moore.

It is difficult when some people have not seen the greats like Stynes, FLOWER, Alves, Jurrah(a cameo !!),Neitz,Hardeman, Matty Whelan/Jetta (would not like to separate them), Garry Lyon (watch the Youtube when he kicked 10 goals in a final !!), Brian Wilson (B'Low medallist) , Shane  Woewodin ( B'low Medallist).

How do you compare Brian Dixon against Stan Alves vs Langdon . Ditterich vs Gawn or Viney T/Viney J vs Barassi

Will have to admit though that the current crop have some all time greats of MFC in Gawny, Petracca, Oliver plus a few "potentials"

Nostalgia glosses over some issues, but the modern footballer is bigger, faster and in some ways more skillful . Robbie Flower would have been up with any of them though.

A positive posting !!!

It's hilarious being old -- I'd have to find room for Robbie Flower, Greg Wells, Brian Wilson, Peter Moore and a few others

Got the same problem....too many greats! Many were the best ever across the whole League.

A bit off topic but I’d love to see how our 1975/76 ‘centreline’ of Alves, Wells and Flower would go against our current day version of Langdon, Oliver and Hunter.

Because of this thread, I have been asking myself the same question.

Oliver is the best player of the 6, followed closely by Flower (I hate relegating Robbie to no. 2 but Oliver is now the best Dees player I have seen).

Alves and Wells are a cut above Langdon and Hunter. They were both very very accomplished players.

I’d still have Flower just over Oliver but I understand how some may not.

Too hard to pick just 22 and I go back to the 50s.

The only absolute locks are Barassi, Flower, Schwarz, Neitz, Lyon, Brett Lovett and Hardeman. Any combination of 22 would not be the best without these seven.

B. Beckwith/Crompton/A Johnson; Tas Johnson/Smith/May; Bob Miller/Wight/Hughes

HB. B Lovett; Neitz; Hardeman

C. Flower; Wells/Wilson/Oliver; Dixon/Alves/ Langdon

HF. Lyon; Schwarz; H Mann/Yze/Davey

F. Ger Healy/Farmer/Robertson; Jacovich/Jurrah/Bennett; Stynes/Baker/O'Dwyer

R. Gawn/White; Barassi; Petracca/Woewodin/

Mix them up any way and you get a great team. But except for the incomparable and untouchable seven, I am not game to make the final choice.

There may be others but 65 years of memories is too much for me to sort through.

None of these teams are complete without Allen Jakovich.

Do yourself a favour and look for some of his highlights on YouTube.

As much as love players from the 90’s and 2000’s my “best” team would be made up mostly of the current team.

We look even better than 2021.

Hope you choose to echo that sentiment on the gameday thread at some point Clint...

We do because we have evolved very nicely since 2021.

We have retained 80% of the side whom the core is now 25+ games more experienced.
We have topped up with two All Australian and B+F winning standard players in Hunter and Grundy.
We have elevated 3 VFL premiership players into our 22 with McVee, Chandler and JVR.

An improvement has been made to every line of the field, what a joy.

So hard not to let Nostalgia put the Swooper/Balme/Danniher era players above the current crop.

Reality is that the current era side are by far the best Melbourne team in my lifetime. But will always have a soft spot for the guys that were my hero's growing up.

OPs team is hard to argue with

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
