Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Don't know why people think McKay would cost multiple high first rounders. He is paid $1 million per year, but Carlton play just as well when he is missing, with Curnow as the clear #1 man, DeKoning playing forward ruck, and Pittonet as a pure ruck. That million a year of salary could be used to make significant improvements to their team in other positions. When Collingwood got rid of Brodie Grundy, at the time a 28 year old two time all australian, they only received pick 27 and they agreed to pay $1.5 million of salary for him.

Why did Carlton made the decision to pay 2 million on McKay and Curnow?

I was of the idea that McKay was gettable once Carlton offered the contract extension to Curnow first (last year). I was very surprised McKay immediately signed his extension, not sure if we made the question back then.

Overpaying for a key forward like McKay is not what I'd like or expect the club to pursue.

What I have heard from a couple of people including a family member who works in the media is the Tom Lynch one whisper that won't go away. We're interested.

And that makes most sense given his age, the transition period that Richmond are in and our window with May and Gawn.

We wouldn't have to pay overs and we'd still have plenty of picks to work with both to trade or hot the draft.

So, you are proposing Lynch as a "bridge" before anointing JVR as our KPF? That would require Lynch to be good for 3 seasons, is he fit enough for that?

Like BBB, we only need him to be good for a season to grab another flag..

When the average player will soon make 500k it’s not that much.

Im not 100% sold on McKay either but McKay and a rookie is likely a better result than 2 x 500k players if you don’t have a mature key forward.

Nar $500 k aint much at all, especially when you consider that a heck of a lot of people havent got anywhere near that figure after 30-40 years in the workforce and dont have that much in Superannuation to retire with.Players ARE OVERPAID! Especially ones who miss simple matchwinning shots on goal

I would rate Dees about 100-1 to get Harry Mckay.  Blues will sell the premiership dream and ensure salary cap in order.
As for Lynch, he’s body is now a problem and I’m not sure he’s got 2+ years left.  Even if interested, Tigers probably asking for a round 1 pick and I’m not buying at that price at all.

Tom Lynch is still in a moon boot. The better option might be neither.

I guess we find out, eh?

JVR will never be our KPF imo. He is a second tall to build around.

Might be. Might also be that the club know better than both of us?

Money aside we'd be mad not to get Harry McKay if it can be faciliated.

  • attracts the number 1 defender
  • gets up the ground and attracts the footy
  • provides a target & straightens up our entries
  • averages 2 goals and 6 marks per game
  • had a poor goalkicking year in 23 but is more than acceptable across his career

Of course the club might know more. But Lynch fractured his foot on 8 April 2023 and is still in a moon boot. It is a bit of a red flag considering the cost would be $1m+ in salary cap space and a first round pick.

And we go SOOOOOO  well with foot injuries.

The single cause of most angst regards lost opportunities of the last decade imo.

A no from me

Hindsight is 20:20, but Lobb should have been our choice last year instead of Grundy.  A second pure ruck (who we now all know can't play forward) made no sense for us, and a forward ruck made even less sense for the Bulldogs.  I would have backed us to get far more out of Lobb than the Bullgods did, and even there he still had some good games.  I expect its now 12 months too late for him to be a signifacant recruit for us though.

Never say never I suppose but a source much closer to him (than a minor sponsor at Hawthorn that is) has said he is happy at Dees and comfortable with the message that he is a required player.  Can’t confirm this has always been the case but that’s how I understand it is at present.

I think the Dogs would pay half of Lobb's contract and offload him for a token pick.

Disappointing if true but absolutely understandable. I can emphatically see why he'd want to move.

In saying that though, what are the chances of the club recanting on their 'required player' position? I imagine it would have to be a somewhat favourable trade, or a trade that could help facilitate other movements the club may wish to be involved in.

He'll be going into the 6th year of his seven year deal next year which he signed back in 2018.

It's doable. No doubt about it. And we have space.

Also, what makes you think he's still in a moonboot? I'm pretty sure he's out.

I'm all for McKay it will allow Petty to go back.

B: McVee, May, Lever

HB: Rivers, Petty, Bowey

C: Langdon, Oliver, Hunter

HF: Petracca, van Rooyen, Neal-Bullen

F: Fritsch, McKay, Pickett

FOLL: Gawn, Brayshaw, Viney

IC: Salem, Sparrow, McAdam, J.Smith

SUB: Chandler

Our time is now get it done dees

If we land Mckay I'd be playing him at CHF and JVR closer to goal.

Mckay would benefit from longer set shots on goal 35m+ JVR better set shot inside 30m.

25 year of age, ready to go.

Carlscum clearly want to get rid of him otherwise all this talk would have been shut down.

If it can be facilitated get it done.

FWIW, I think both Gawn and May replacements (break the glass options) should be younger players who they can steward into the team. I think the reverse is true for a KPF. Is lynch too much like JVR (a worry if his is still in a boot)? We need a BBB (TMac) replacement big leading forward that frees up the rest of the forward line as threats.

Its a shame JJ is likely to leave, he will do well at Sydney.

Big challenge for Goodwin and co. This essentially means mini-rebuild. No more gifting games to plodders. Still can't get over McDonald playing in finals, no Woewodin in finals, and JVR being dropped for Brown. Have to start backing in recruitment eventually. Something tells me losing Bedford has hit home hard this finals series and they realise that talent isn't just going to stick around.

Banking on Tomlinson, Woewodin, Turner, Laurie at least to all be common place in the 22 next year. Could be a year out of the 8 but needs to happen.

All the clubs would be trawling lists where players aren't getting opportunities. I certainly hope we are looking in unexpected places for talent.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
