Daniel Curtin from Claremont (Serious what is WA having what we need all the time) is 196cm and can potentially play up forward as well. If Freo tank hard , we should be able to snare him with a top 5 pick.

Don't think Woey / Brown are the mid/fwd prototype we'd be looking for. Was more so thinking around the lines of Bailey Humphrey style given we were so interested in him last draft.

Not sure Laurie will see midfield minutes at AFL level. But Howes is a good shout as a classy mid - does he have the physicality to eventually play inside? Dunno.

It'd be interesting if we went tall with our first pick, given we stock piled them during last years draft. Guess that's the joy of having two first rounders this year.

I think it is silly to draft a kpf or kpd, realistically they are going to take 4 years till they are truly affecting games. We are in our window now, we need to draft players like dursma Reid caddy Moir and perhaps Watson. They can do damage in forward line next year. And then progress into midfield, maybe like rozee from port? Bundle picks if we have too

Archer Reid. 203cm tall forward currently playing for Gippsland Power in thr Coates leagues. Huge work rate who likes to get up the ground and be a long target option. 

Daniel Curtin is a 197cm defender/forward from Claremont.

They're two of the best KPF's alongside Gold Coast Academy Jed Walter (An absolute beast) who should feature inside top 10.

I don't think any player makes it straight into our starting 23, unless they are top end talent like Daicos and even then its positional as well... i.e if we were somehow to snap up Reid, is he good enough in year 1 to play ahead of Viney, Trac, Oliver, Sparrow, Kozzy, Lingers in the midfield? Or even Bowey, McVee, Brayshaw off HB? The former two have had the VFL development. Not saying you wouldn't take him but we have that area sufficiently covered with depth.

Given quality bookends are as rare as pink diamonds, you have to invest in getting them when they are available and they generally go top 5. I noted Chelly had mentioned Reid previously. Have you seen him play mate? Is there a current day comparison to Reid in the AFL?

No I haven't mate, but that's only because he's played the 1 game this year in round 1 and that was against the Murray Bushrangers which was down in Morwell. 

I was talking to some of the lads the week after as they were there coaching and they said the 2 absolute standouts were Zane Duursma and Archer Reid.

Reid took 9 marks for the day which 4 were contested and kicked 3.1. He also played 12 games last year as a bottom age and kicked 16 goals. 

He's style is a lead up CHF who can really work up and down the ground and is pretty clean below his knees for a tall KPF. He would actually compliment JVR as he is more a stay at home power forward compared to Reid.

He's personally not my first choice of selection inside top 10, but that's mainly me thinking that more of a need to top up with elite midfield talent instead.

I’d add Nate Caddy to the list, 191 cm, but plays taller than that. Could have a run in midfield too, but marking is his trick.

Liam Fawcett from Central Districts is one getting some early attention in SA, bit of Thilthorpe in his play and could make a run at the top 10. 
 

Logan Morris from the Jets has shown some promise and takes a good grab too.

As far as small forwards go, Nick Watson is massive talent in a small (169cm) package. Even at his size is a top 10 (or higher) prospect and gotten some impressive numbers in midfield over the last couple of games. 
 

Jack Delean from SA is also quite exciting.

I think you underestimate young players now. Game isn’t like 10 plus years ago 

young guys come in and dominate 

sheezel daicos gibney etc 

dursma was kicking 7 goals is senior footy few years ago

reid is likened to dusty martin 

we don’t need a few young players like other teams 

We just need the best to complement this group 

plus why can’t we just pick up a backman in free agency 

like hawks did with Brian lake

I just watched a video before of Cal and Riley talking about Watson and whether a team would actually take a small forward that high in the draft, but if Kozzy leaves, even if he doesn't, we may be able to roll the dice there given our list stage/cycle.

Yep. That said, there were similar  concerns on whether Kozzy was taken too high for a small forward in ‘19. 

Watson has all the attributes to be a very good forward that can be a spark in midfield.

I've been keen on both Duursma and Reid for the last two years and Duursma is now a real possibility given Freo's fall.

I genuinely can't see them bouncing back and I think they'll have a similar year to us post our 2018 Prelim exit. They simply lost too many solid contributors and have a much more difficult draw, (most of it coming in the second half of the year).

So a top 6-7 pick is looking good for us with their second-rounder which will be low to mid 20's.

Duursma trained with us last year so we've seen him up close and he's now in our range. Aside from that, I think his attributes compliment us wonderfully. Goal sense, unbelievable skills, overhead mark, quick for his height and can play on ball. I'd like to check his contested ball winning ability but I just think he'd be such a great addition.

Reid unfortunately will be out of our reach and I can't imagine us trading three first rounders for pick 1. I think Jase and co will have a great plan in place to trade up again and aim for  top 5 pick to land Duursma with a second pick inside the top 10 and a later second round pick. Definitely achievable given the hand we'll have which doesn't include the trading of our future first rounder.

If that eventuates, we'll be the envy of the competition.

Looking forward to following the draft closely as well as the Dees having a crack at flag number 2, how good is fooooooty!

Curtin will go top 10, but he’s a better defender than forward, although could also become a good KPF, hasn’t had a lot of exposure there at elite level Young Sammy Van Rooyen is improving quickly with his leading patterns, attack on the aerial contest and efforts at ground level. I can see him shooting up the draft boards just like JVR. Luka Kentfield won’t go high but good development there and Coen Livingston as Ruck/fwd. Small forwards in the Kozzie mould are rare, Bobby Warrell similar size only came down to Perth from regional WA this season has some tricks. Malikai Champion is 24 draft has some xfactor and is I believe the son of Lewis Jetta. But early door’s someone will pop up through the year from WA

Agree with you here Gawn dog.

I think right now, we are in the enviable position where we are recruiting for sustained sucess to replace the likes of May, Gawn, (Grundy perhaps) T Mac, BBB and Viney in a few years, while the likes of Trac, Clarry & Co still have some years in them.  We have this great second wave including Sparrow, Rivers, Chandler, Bowey, Petty, JJ, Disco, McVee, JVR etc all coming through right now to rejuvenate the team (Kossie if we can keep him). 

An interesting one for me will be if, when and how we can recruit a future Trac and Oliver.  I suspect we may try to target that kind of elite midfielder with the compensation picks from Jackson.  KPPs take a while to mature and impact games, but I think quality mids (with the exception  of freaks like Dacos and Oliver) also take a while to really mature as well.  Took Trac and Clarry a few years to really reach the level they are at now, where they are amoung the competition elite.

At the moment, overall, I think we are trying to avoid the Hawthorn syndrome where we trade out top draft picks for aging ready made players and are trying to keep our list replenished by going back to the draft ever year or couple of years with the highest draft picks we can conjure together.  While I think we'll continue to look for ready made bargains like Hunter, BBB and Grundy, I don't see us trading valuable players (unless our hand is forced by go home etc) or high draft picks for established needs players at the end of their careers, just to keep us up.  Perhaps if there was a generational type player like Lever or May, where we had a huge need that we could trade for, but like you, I don't really see us with any huge needs right now that would justify that.
