Gold Coast willing to give up Pick 7 to pick up his 500k contract, now supposedly Melksham is on that kind of money... he hasn't played that consistently but seems very good at pulling his kicks to offset team defense I think he would excel in that role with us and net us a pretty pick in the top 10. Simple win for me.

Must be a hell of a lol more than 500k if they will throw in pick 7, would have to be north of a million otherwise I’m calling bunk on this

The AFL report says the deal he is on is "heavily backended" so I suspect the remaining 2 years must be over 750k to justify pick 7.

Good deal for North, WCE etc who are looking to rebuild via buying Pick 7.

For the MFC.. would you let Hunt go (saves $450 approx) pay $300k for two years for Bowes and enter the draft at pick 7 for an outside mid....Perhaps

We should be going after this aggressively. Shift Tomlinson and or Hunt if we need to.

You'd have to imagine Bowes would prefer to come to us than go to a rebuilding club, but who knows. The guarantee of game elsewhere would be better (but reckon he still gets a gig for us ahead of Hunt or Sparrow etc)

You add Baker and one of or both of Melk and Hibbo and you are well ahead on salary cap room.

Yes. You would. Bowes is a decent pickup. Pick 7 sounds too good to be true. I would think we would need to throw in a future 2nd rounder or something like that.

A team finishing where we did and getting pick 7 for a bit of salary cap space would be a fantastic result.

I’d be taking Bowes contract and pick 7, instead of taking Grundy. As a back up for Gawn I’d ask for Meek in the deal with Freo. Would also be saving the pick that would be wasted on Grundy. Stupid idea to go after Grundy. It’s the Westbrook type situation that everyone else knows is a terrible fit for us - but apparently we know better. Whoever tells the players to bomb the ball into the forward 50 continuously is probably the one who is big on Grundy. We could end up with Bowes, pick 7 and a second rounder. Or we could end up with a second ruckman we don’t need.

Jackson to Fremantle.

Fremantle send Pick 13 to Filth and future 2nd Round Pick to Gold Coast.

Collingwood send Grundy to Melbourne.

Gold Coast send Bowes and Pick 7 to Melbourne with Freo picking up a large portion of Bowes contract.

Dees get Bowes, Grundy and Pick 7 for Jackson

Gold Coast get a future 2nd Round Pick and cap relief for Bowes and Pick 7.

Filth get Pick 13 for Grundy.

Freo get Jackson for Pick 13, Future 2nd Rounder and taking on part of Bowes contract?

It would be far fetched to imagine Melbourne getting involved in this sort of deal. I don’t believe we need a Bowes so it doesn’t get beyond first base. It’s also a costly exercise to pay that much for a player we don’t need and finally, far too adventurous for our recruiting people. Forget it.

We lack outside accumulators that have clean hands and are high quality kicks. He fits the bill and is of good size and agility to play on multiple types.

If I was Free I'd be rushing to Melbourne to sign that deal. If you analyse it we swap Jackson for Grundy and a little cap relief for 2 years. Bowes and 7 are totally different deals, so why involve Jackson/Freo?

Am I missing something?

To be clear I don't really understand any of the permutations that get floated at this time of year but do enjoy the intrigue and speculation. If we happened to be keen on pick 7 could we get another club involved who was keen on Jack Bowes but not his large contract and in effect 'buy' the pick for say $150k x 2 years and allow that other club to get the player at a more sensible price?

If Jayden leaves, Bowes is 3 years younger, slightly taller and a better user of the ball.

He also comes with pick 7.

We could lengthen his contract and amortise it.

That means we could get our next key forward as well, with JVR coming in and Tom and BBB probably on their last legs.

This is a golden opportunity.

When GC gave up pick 21 with Will Brodie they got Freo’s 2022 2nd round pick back. That will be mid 30’s now but Im sure the Suns were hoping it would be 25-32. They expected a small downgrade in a pick that they could shuffle back a year.

Unless Bowes is on completely stupid money there’s no way he comes with a free pick 7 alone.

GC are trying to spread their list talent out over a few years so they don’t have to pay the 3rd and 4th years overs for 2 guys they draft this year (will get a top pick for Rankine) whilst also paying King, Anderson etc.

My guess is the Suns will say to Essendon pick 7 and Bowes, (possibly with a late pick thrown in) for your future first. That’s still a deal Essendon should take. Or Hawthorn.

We’d probably offer our future first for pick 7 but the Suns wouldn’t be keen on that.

He looks v slow to me - no way he gets a game in our team if we are looking to improve from this season - would be paying a big chunk of cash to bloke who would likely play the entire season with Casey

The fact they are prepared to part with pick 7 to see the back of him says it all

NO from me

fully back this as a move. even get them to throw in corbett who we were linked to as another forward option as well. i think he could be a 30+ goal a season player at afl level if he had the opportunities. at mfc he would definitely get more than at gc17 where the ball doesnt go down there nearly as often. and bowes is just unreal value given what he can do at afl level despite it not being what the suns thought they were getting with a top10 pick

Whatever else we do in trade week, I hope we do this deal.

It will add an experienced, high draft pick, utility player to our list and give us a crack at one of the best 7 kids in the draft, maybe a key forward, who could play with JVR for the next dozen years.

Then, even if we trade our LJ picks for a proven player or two, we have still gotten a top end youngster.

if bowes is on 800k a year for 2 more years, surely we can say ok make it 400k 4 years and we'll do it. we can definitely fit that into the cap surely

Why would he do that? There would have to be extra $s for the extra years.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
