Name change most likely and no change to the date. June wasn’t the Queen’s actual birthday so doubt it’ll get moved to November for Charles III.

Hope they have a minutes silence for her passing tonight before the National Anthem.

Tonight, along with everything else held aloft in the cheer squad, there will be a tribute to the Queen in the form of a red flag with a blue crown in the centre. It’s very tasteful and a beautiful touch.

Just curious: why the FacePalm @Dalrot?

I ask this as someone who was born in (the republic of) Ireland to extremely patriotic, devout Catholic parents and who was raised from birth to abhor the Royals.
Do you not accept a show of respect for the Queen? Because I reckon if I can, pretty much anyone can.

Not the greatest fan of "all things regal", more of a republican myself. Having said that, there isn't much difference in the outcomes of a constitutional monarchy v representative democracy. I would definitely not say that her passing grieves me overmuch, but I greatly admired QE2.

She inherited a bigoted aloof worldview of royal families dominating Europe via interbreeding and snobbery. She had to be the figurehead over a period of time which saw the greatest ever social change including royalty being a sideshow rather than a centrepiece of governance. She handled it with dignity, wit, candour, intelligence and a profound sense of duty that none of her family could ever match.

WW1 changed the world. I believe her passing will be another gateway of extraordinary change.

I just hope the AFL doesn't attempt some ill-begotten token acknowledgment before the game tonight (I have Angry Anderson in a batmobile, or a pitch-imperfect Meatloaf at war with melody and timing going round in my head. "My spidey senses are tingling...")

You’re Irish! I knew I liked you.

My grandfather was from Athlone, and my partner was born in Belfast and all his family still live there. I lived in Dublin for a few years, but I left became it was filled with Dubliners 😉 (I actually love the place).

And I bet it would be exempt from fringe benefits tax

It does (called wealth tax)

The Royal Estate is exempt

Mind you the UK has so many tax rorts you would need to be very lax to pay big tax unless you're the mug middle class

Technically Irish. Came to Australia as a kid so I’m about as Aussie as they come. Does your partner still have his accent? Folks from Northern Ireland are so hard to understand. Case in point…

I’m expecting that they’ll skip the fireworks, at least, when the players run out.

i think it would be fitting to play God Save the King in addition to Advance Australia Fair. (Embarrassed that I had to recall if it’s Fare or Fair)

He’s more Derry Girls - so more swearing and calling everything ‘wee’. I only understand about half of it. It’s the key to the success of our relationship.

Yeah with some nice stirring b/w footage of Ark Royal, few Harriers and changing guards at the Palace

There won’t be another QB game for a very long time. The next two line heirs after Charles are male.

Widen your imagination

keep QBW for Elizabeth II AND  add another gazetted national PH for the day Charles is coronated

if we become a republic keep QBW and add republic day

it’s all solutions

Can never be sure with you, Faultydet, whether you're being sarcastic or not. Just in case you're not, the answer to your question is politics. A politician who removes a public holiday without replacing it with another risks a huge backlash. I know Kennett did it when he removed Easter Tuesday and Show Day as public holidays, but he did that when he was first elected and had a mandate to do just about anything. The current Premier (or, if you prefer, the Premier after the Victorian election later this year) almost certainly won't be in the same position of strength as Kennett was early in his premiership.

Deadly serious on this one LaDee.

I've always thought we have burdened our small business owners with too many freebies for their workers.

Would be very happy to see the back of Queens birthday and Labour day as public holidays.

I had visitors last night, one of whom is from the Rep of Ireland and they showed me a selection of Twitter posts from that country referring to the Queen's passing.

I could not believe the vitriol! I won't provide any examples but the word "disrespectful" does not go near it. Some of comments drew on events that happened hundreds of years ago.

The hatred was clearly abiding and visceral.

My son showed me some that he’d found. Absolutely vile and totally unnecessary. But I guess that’s the world in which we live. 🤷‍♀️

My parents and grand parents talked about Cromwell like it happened yesterday.  And mum was a monarchist who supported the republic. Go figure.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. We’re already a month into the MFC preseason (if you started counting when the younger players in the group began the campaign along with some of the more keen older heads)

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
