Lets keep things in perspective.  She inherited the job, had bucketloads of money she never worked for & lived a privileged life of luxury most of us can only dream of.

I’m not a monarchist at all, but I’m not sure I can get behind the idea that she never worked. It seems like her entire life was a series of obligations, which might not directly translate to “hard work”, but certainly doesn’t resemble a life of leisure either. In a weird way I’ve always felt sorry for the Royal Family. They’re like living dolls walking around a public dollhouse, living an incredibly strange, inhuman life.

Anyway, here she is with a footy…

I wouldn't be so sure about that. After a respectful period of time, there is likely to be fresh discussion about changing Australia's system of government from a constitutional monarchy to a republic. Whether that decision is made or not, as part of the debate, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Queen's Birthday/King's Birthday taken from the calendar and replaced with another public holiday not necessarily on the second Monday in June. (I'm not proposing to argue for or against the concept of a republic in this thread as it's inappropriate and unnecessary at this time.)

Why does the removal of the Queens birthday required a replacement day off?

I say get rid of it and send people back to work.

This is the exact moment Her Majesty realised she got sucked into buying one of those fake Ricky Nixon footys after last year's Grand Final, the ones with 'Charlie Spargo 8' on them.

Love the Monarchy or not you have to admire the life she led and the person that she was. Now is the time to pay respects.

Tonight, along with everything else held aloft in the cheer squad, there will be a tribute to the Queen in the form of a red flag with a blue crown in the centre. It’s very tasteful and a beautiful touch.

I like it! Perfect show of respect.

A Burley? Seriously? Hope she doesn’t kick that on its point - it will break her foot! And forget about longevity - that thing is peeling in Scotland within a month!

God rest her soul.

And get her a bloody Sherrin, I mean how hard is it. I don’t care that it’s from South Australia, what’s the point of being a Commonwealth if we don’t get that sorted…

Rough luck with the Old Firm game.

Already seen lots of people complaining about premier league games being cancelled but still having to go to work aha.

Hi Roy. It was an away game at The Piggery as well so the equivalent of finding a gold ticket in a Wonka bar. I gave them to my cousins who drove down on a Wednesday night when they had reorganised the date. I think we horsed them 2-0. Thankfully they didn't cancel any of the U2 gigs I also had tickets for at that time at Wembley, Leeds and Edinburgh so could have been much worse.

Very interesting.. I would doubt we would call off any events though.

I would guess that we would introduce a minutes silence tonight instead of calling it off.

As for the Queen's Birthday clash, Queen Elizabeths real birthday is 26th of April.

We dont celebrate until the second Monday of June.

Prince Charles is on 14th of November.

I would imagine that we would retain the public holiday on that date and simply rename it.

Not to seem pedantic at this time, but her birthday is April 21st (one day after my Mum)

There won’t be another QB game for a very long time. The next two line heirs after Charles are male.

Can never be sure with you, Faultydet, whether you're being sarcastic or not. Just in case you're not, the answer to your question is politics. A politician who removes a public holiday without replacing it with another risks a huge backlash. I know Kennett did it when he removed Easter Tuesday and Show Day as public holidays, but he did that when he was first elected and had a mandate to do just about anything. The current Premier (or, if you prefer, the Premier after the Victorian election later this year) almost certainly won't be in the same position of strength as Kennett was early in his premiership.

Taking public holidays off people is literally political suicide.

I have a long held theory that if we proposed changing Australia Day to the last Monday in January (therefore guaranteeing a long weekend every year) 90% of people would be onboard with it. Just needs a bit of PR work to get over the line.

You serious! (and I’m retired) I’m a republican but would have gladly celebrated the birthday of the Queen’s second cousin twice removed- if they had granted a holiday for it

The QB holiday is in celebration of Queen Victoria, not Queen Elizabeth. Nothing will change.

Not a monarchist but had alot of time for the Queen.  All class and never wavered.

70 years at the top is some effort.

First anthem i learned in Preps was God Save the Queen (no not the Sex Pistols version!).... just before my 2nd 'It's a Grand Old Flag'.

The one and only time i actually got to see her was in a drive by as she arrived at the Braemar Gathering as the final event of the Grampian Highland Games in Scotland, 1974.  Also handing out the cups & shields at the end.

If you've never been and want to see strong hairy men toss cabers (wooden poles!), put stones and throw hammers in their colourful kilts and sporrans. Along with highland dancing and some of the best pipe bands you'll ever hear, i'd highly recommend it as a once in a lifer day out/experience.  Beautiful country side and surrounds also.

May she rest in peace.

not sure that is true

Quote

In Britain, the monarch’s birthday has been celebrated since 1748 and, in Australia, every year since the First Fleet arrived in 1788. The birthday was always celebrated on the actual date of the monarch’s birthday until 1936, the year of the death of King George V, Elizabeth’s grandfather. His birthday was 3 June and the date has since stayed around early June.

All of these are incorrect. It's been King's Birthday before and it will likely be again.

http://demonwiki.org/Queens+Birthday

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/31398244

In Australia it was originally on the birthday of the monarch (starting from George III) and until George V who was born on 3 June. After that it changed to just be on the first Monday in June. Other Australian states celebrate different dates today.

So it was originally King's Birthday, and it has been both.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
