POSTGAME : Rd 19 vs Western Bulldogs

I think that was one of out better games in a while.  Dogs are the #1 stoppage side and we held up pretty good, even beating them at centre bounce stoppages.

I honestly think that's as good as the dogs can play,  the way they moved the ball and always took a risky kick, that isn't sustainable!

It's a bad loss in terms of the season and our upcoming games, but if it was 3 weeks ago i would have said we are on the right path.

We missed Lever.  Bulldogs would never have scored 110 if he was in the team.

We didn't have a ruckman drop back to help defend for nearly the whole game which compounded the impact of Lever's absence.

The morning after, still angry but credit to Dogs, they played well. However without 10 more frees, almost the disposal count of an extra half a player, they lose. Particularly as they were almost 10 frees up after half time.

Compare the Jack Viney swing around and kick the ball, to Bontempelli over 360 tackle and throw/drop one handed the ball.

Kossie catches Dale in middle of ground vs Demons getting pinged.

Across season they have most frees in AFL. Just bloody annoying.

Watching the game, minimal umpire whistle, Demons winning. Umpires whistle Dogs get back into game. Same happened last year in same game.

Anyway as mentioned by a few, Kossie goals we win.

I didn’t really notice the umpires apart from the Bont fresh airy when Tracc tackled him. I knew we were screwed when the game was a shoot out considering we were coming back from NT on a 6 day break. This latter part of the Fixture us screwing us. Another 6 day break coming up….

I think you’ve nailed it, exciting Dogs win, but high risk and style won’t win a final.

Also Lever & BBB out hurts our structure.

We seemed to run out of puff in the last qtr, I’m sure hot Alice Springs game and 6.day break didn’t help. Port also ran out of puff and only gave Cats an extra day break advantage.

My thoughts pretty much mirror these as well, annoyed the dogs were allowed to stay close, which you can directly attribute to the quality of the umpiring.

But when you sit back for s a second and analyses in the cold light of day, we did butcher opportunities late and the dogs played very well. English held Gawn to minimal influence and Clarry went out of the game in the 2nd half.

On top of that we missed shots and made mistakes (May).

It was a completely different game to what we normally play (high pace and quick ball movement) and we did pretty well considering.

As bitter as it was to lose, it wasn't all bad news. Just very frustrating

He was a total fan. To make yourself feel better listen to the MMM call of the GF. Poor bastard must have been calling the game through gritted teeth.

Unusually after a loss I had a great sleep last night. I'm tip top this morning

The inside 50 tackle count is the canary in the goldmine. Forward pressure is our first line of defence and when it don't happen it puts us on the back foot straight away. I reckon this will be priority no. 1 for the coaching team this week

Dogs attacked through Lingers wing all night as well. This never happened last year

Now that this loading bollocks is over I expect to see us holding onto leads and closing out games from here

We've been there or thereabouts the last few weeks. There's plenty of upside to look forward to over the next 2 months so jump on for the ride folks. It's all to play for and we're in it up to our necks

The multiverse doesn't exist.

ANB nor Viney got a chance to snap a goal.

I respectfully beg to differ @kev martin. Reading through the posts on this thread, I am transported to an alternative universe. Some posters:

  • definitely watched a different game to me,
  • fail to grasp even a modicum of complexity as it applies to the relationship between human nature and footy,
  • lack the good grace to extend respect and dignity to some all time champions of a club who delivered, 10 months ago, the holy grail in a 40 minute 'other dimensional' execution of this glorious game, unmatched in the history of grand finals.

The video tape machines at the other 17 clubs have been worn out pulling our game apart. Bevo can coach people. Yes, we shot off our feet a few times, but Bevo got us. And if I was Goody, I probably wouldn't have planned for English to play the one good game of his life against Max, nor JUH to seriously arrive on the same night.

Sometimes the lack of perspective on these post-game threads is at least as ill-considered as Maysie's brain farts. Kettle/pot/black.

Max had a knee to the back early in the game and was on his knees for a while.  He has had back issues for a few months.

Why then did we play him for 92% of the game and the back up ruckmen Jackson 69% and Weideman 72%.

Max had to do it all:  ruck, fwd and rarely (by necessity) drop back.  I don't think Jackson went down back at all but then he rarely does.

Just doesn't make sense to burden a beaten up Max with that workload.  Share it around a bit more among the three of them be it ruck, fwd or back.

So 5 losses for the year - Freo, Sydney, Collingwood, Geelong and The Dogs.

If I’m remembering correctly I think we’ve lead by 20 points or more in all those games except Geelong? We’ve been massively out scored after half time in the last 8 rounds. It’s not a coincidence, in fact it’s eerily similar.

I’m feeling pretty confident about where we sit. I think our boys know what won them the flag last year. As Goodwin told the players in the Grand Final ‘Trust in your fitness’.

We’re still Premiers last I looked 😃

Really need things to go right on the injury front and we will still be in good position to defend our flag come September. 3 more wins would help!

I don't get it either.

Gawn was slaughtering us in the ruck by either trying to grab it or hitting directly to WB player.

I feel our midfield stoppage work was better when Jackson is in there because we become less predictable. See Brisbane game when we smashed their midfield apart.

Yeh i havent seen us set up with front and square players very often.  It's just not in SG's / our FD's DNA or hasn't been till this point.  So the multiverse alternative just felt perplexing to me when you mentioned it.

If you watch a Blues match Kev, you can see that Vossy has them structured up for this, even around stoppages, so that if the ball gets hit either side they often have a sweeper ready to pounce.

Same at the drop of many contested marks including one sitting out the back much of the time for the ball that slips over the back.

Walsh one of the main culprits who works his [censored] off across HF to try and present here.

Some of the worst vision for me last night was when our blokes run towards the arc from the skinny side... there is sometimes a player they could hit up fat side with an OTT HB or even a kick to a lead coming straight out of the goal sqaure.

Instead, much of the time (not always ... Spargo to Weid one exception) they either dont see them or are on auto pilot and just kick blindly to a general area in the pocket and hope for the best.  This is partly why i question our forward line coaching.  Our forward craft just lacks cohesion and finesse.  It's basically non existent unless Kossie gets hold of it in space and creates his own magic.

And then there's the pressure factor.  To lay zero tackles inside 50 last night.  Well that says it all.  We aint playing in a PF let alone a GF if we're playing at that level.

The other pieces of vision that were damning last night.

We failed ro cover the Doggies fat side outlets.  They exploited us here which allowed them the corridor far too often.

Lastly, after a scrap at HF for the Dogs, early on in that scrap i believe (but could be wrong) you can see what i thought was ANB running close to Treloar (loosely).  He then switched off, drifted away, and allowed their most dangerous mid/forward (in terms of goal scoring) to get free on the fat side (roughly on the arc) for the easy receive out of congestion and goal on his favoured right side from about 45 out.

Now you are not going to be able to cover VG to great players 100% of the time in match i realise.  Especially early in a game where the heat / pace.is on.  But this was.much later into the game and if the player in concern (ANB?) was truly switched on in a defensive sense, he would have stayed with Treloar and not allowed him to slip out for a bread and butter goal (for him).

Worrying signs last night against an ordinary mid ladder opponent.  Too mamy star gazers.

Still hurts, I had this dream where we played them in a grand final and we were 2 points down and Kozzie had the ball and was bouncing down the wing but then had to go through the living room and out the back of a house to kick a goal and the time ran out. It was some initiative by Gillon to make the game more exciting so he introduced mazes like this etc

The opposition have worked out that if they run at us we're vulnerable.
And they're all doing it.

Hopefully we now take some "Learnings" from the game and understand that you cannot rest on a 3 goal lead.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
