Imagine if motivation from his former coach helped us win a flag 🙃

Sounds great to me.

Grundy plays the game of his life, kicking  4 goals and assisting in many more, in a winning GF.

You're possibly right but we had to something ... our KPF's aren't firing and Max forward wasn't working either

So do nothing and it's probably more of the same or do something and maybe we'll get a positive result.  Maybe

I reckon the MC came to the realisation that our forward line marking strength was negligible and we weren't a dominant force in the ruck either

We could have reversed roles (Gawn/Grundy) but we've chosen a different pathway

It could be that either Brown or JVR fires then one makes way for Grundy who  comes in and competes hard ... and right now, that's a better result than neither of our KPF's firing

Not forgetting that Grundy is a proper ruckman

Yeah I like how the club is trying to be creative with Grundy.

I think it's bold by Goodwin and shows that we're not set on same system compared to last year where I felt we were too rigid set on what made us great in 2021.

Club’s done everything right with Grundy. There’s no reason he can’t be a useful forward, leading up to the wings and picking off the opposition’s dump kicks out of defence. Him on one wing, Max on the other. You could also just sit him in the square although I’d prefer that role for Petracca. He’s an AA ruckman, he’s just been told this is your role so if you want to help us win the flag this is what you need to do. The media just want a story. There’s no way Max is going solo for the rest of the year. I said yesterday that I thought Grundy had coasted a bit this year. Over to you Brodes, show us what you’ve got. By the way the Flag is in the bag.

I think we are forgetting about the quality of the surface and the overall playing conditions in the Finals run up and  just as how well this combination were going in preseason and dry weather early games.

We aren't asking Brodie to be Tom Hawkins. We want him to play ruck/forward. The media can't seem to get that. They think we want him to play forward for 100% game time. As for Buckley, he hates us, (the feeling is mutual) last week he said we can't win it because we can't score. We have scored 69 points less than the pies this year. He is clueless. He was a great player, but a failed coach.

JVAM, love your work. Jack has been channeling his anger excellently since you’ve been on the job!

In the true sense of Maggotness, the Media will continue to be revving up every TEAM we play, at least until the end of home season,  under the pretext of impartial study, where they actually want to see MAX and GRUNDY in particular, and other players of note get done over by physical and mental pressure and abuse.

No conspiracy here old Sports Media Lackeys...

The issue isn't Grundy or Max.  We need that mobile CHF hitting up at the ball, a B Brown hitting up from deep inside 50m then the resting ruck is your third tall forward closer to goal from the long dump kick.

Issue is, TMac has been injured again, B Brown being asked to play way to high and JVR still learning leaning his craft.

Grundy nor Max are key forwards, neither was Luke Jackson but as third option tall forward they will be effective as long as we get the right structure around them.

We also need to note that both aren't young anymore there will be a lot of games where one isn't available or managed.

I really feel for Brodie. All this week it is going to be about him not being good enough and he has made the wrong decision.

Simon says: It's all FUGAZI

I am certain this has all been discussed  front to back, left to right , by Goody, Choco et al with Brodie.  My take... it's not his focus.  He made very poignant and particular comments prior to the season. He was all in on what he could learn and in return contribute to the Dees. Themedia would like to think they're running the narrative...theyre just running their mouths.

The club and Brodie , I'm sure, are ver focused on roles, and team. Brodie is a team player.  I have a feeling Grundy will be making all his statements via his play.

Tracc and hopefully once healthy Fritsch should alternate between CHF. Fritter is under-utilised if he’s consistently playing so close to goal.

I‘d like to have both of those guys playing forward alongside Max in the ruck and 3 taller forwards. Could be any of 3 of Grundy, BBB, JVR or Melk.

I don’t expect Grundy will suddenly develop sticky hands or leading patterns in a short period of time. I suspect the big thing they are looking for is a consistent impact at the aerial contest and far better defensive pressure. He has the size and athleticism to do that.

All valid points.

I dont think weve seen much of Trac  fwd with Fritta higher up much ...as an actual plan. Sounds ok to me.

Id like to see Brodie become a very successful Dee and it seems like the club is trying to leave no stone unturned to make that happen…..I’m happy our footy club is giving that a fair dinkum crack rather than persisting with something that wasn’t quite right

I don't usually get bothered by media narratives...

But this 'Brodie is and never will be a forward... what are Melbourne thinking' really bugs me.

a.) No s***t sherlock

b.) All the FD have said is that he needs to go back to forward on his "forward craft".

Who has said straight up that Brodie will only come back in as a forward? Its nonsense. The plan signing Brodie was to work in tandem with Max throughout the season in the ruck and rest forward at times. The combo hasn't been tearing game apart or anything but there's been positives:

  • Its helped Max with in game fatigue/recovery post as he's not the only ruck getting beat up like he often does
  • Brodie stood up as the sole ruckman when Max was out
  • He was also a more effective ruck in many games which resulted in goals. He gives us a different look at stoppages as an extra mid with his follow up

The only knock against Grundy is he hasn't performed well while resting as a forward. So the FD made a smart decision to get extra time up forward in the twos to build his form and confidence.

I realise the media want to run with this. But starting talk of where he ends up next year because he's been asked to work on a few things at Casey is just so over the top.

Agreed. Max needs a chop out and Grundy is more capable at doing this than Jvr. Bbb has shown some good form and Jvr has been off the boil somewhat.

So Grundy in for Jvr. Simples. Thats two very tall talls in Bbb and Grundy.

Fritta and Milk. Two very hard match ups.

Spargo makes room for Fritta.

I reckon we have to wait and see what unfolds ... although, your changes could well come to fruition

Back a couple of months ago I was projecting JVR to be a mainstay CHF by this stage of the season so I'm still holding out hope that he can nail down that role

As for Brown, it's all about his legs and whether he can get back to decent form

A predicted dry Sunday afternoon could see JVR & Brown get amongst it

Adelaide are a dangerous opponent but if we can deliver the ball well to our 2 KPF's, we can get them both into some sort of form

Wouldn't it be grand if the 2 of them were to snag 6 or 7 goals as a pair?

Grundy probably plays at least 1 game at Casey?  But I'm guessing, deevs

The media is out in full meltdown arseclown mode.

Grundy will be traded. We will have to pay his contract. This is a disaster. The world is ending. Nathan Buckley knows what he’s talking about because he won so many flags. Damien Barrett is a real man and not in fact a cockroach.

Sigh

Just as a discussion point, how can we say absolutely that Grundy can’t play forward, when he has played mainly as a ruckman and hasn’t been tried in that role? It may not work, but it might. He would be a hard matchup for the opposition.

My Pies’ mates who have seen him play for 10 years, say he is more a ruck rover than a ruckman. Remember someone else described that way?

We have seen him pick up the ground ball, run and bounce, take marks up forward and kick about 10 goals so far this year.

JVR is smaller than Grundy, less experienced and not dominating yet. BBB has lost some of the little mobility he had and goes out of the game and has kicked only a few goals in the last few games. Tom Mac is injured and Schache is obviously not being considered.

BBB and JVR kicked one goal between them against the Lions.

I can’t believe that Grundy can’t offer similar up forward atm, or at least the same as BBB or JVR. He is strong, fit and experienced. He is a fair kick for goal. He is also the perfect chop out for Max and a better forward ruck than our two forwards. Him playing there saves JVR being belted and exhausted and affecting his main role as a forward.

All I am saying is this can work for a while. It is not an impossibility like some pundits in the media are saying.

I think part of the issue with Grundy, and what he has to get better at (same with Max) is not clogging up the space and changing the way the mids look to connect forward.

Neither Max nor Brodie cause the defenders to separate, which makes it much easier to defend. How often have we seen Max or Brodie this year being kicked to as a stationary target with multiple tall defenders coming in to spoil, block or intercept mark?

BBB may not be as mobile as he used to be and his goal tally might be modest the last few weeks, but I think it’s no accident that with him and Melksham in the team (and Trac forward) we’ve seen more pressure on opposition defenders as the forwards are moving. BBB is still our best tall forward (for now) by some way IMO.

Brodie can still contribute forward this year - maybe even as third tall with JVR or TMac - but he needs to know enough to not disrupt the effectiveness of the forward line as a whole.

It’s all media noise and Buckley him self was an unsuccessful coach so he cant tell a premiership coach in Goodwin how he should handle his players.

Grundy is high profile so it’s causing alot of debate, but in the end it’s about what’s best for the team period.

Sure some might feel sorry for him , but what about a Dunstan or a Tomlinson?
Its just about getting the right mix and putting us in the best shape and position to win another flag.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
