Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Mostly BS, based on flawed logic, or no logic at all!

I reckon many (like me) would have got a bit shirty and indignant when they first read that, but it's nothing more than a glowing endorsement of the team first ethic instilled in the group by our "under siege/gambler/alco" 🙄 coach and his team.

Max played the best 2 games of his life to help us finish number 1, and to humiliate the Cats on the second biggest stage of all.

Angus would be a midfield star at 17 other clubs - yeah Bulldogs, I'm even looking at you- but we see him getting 15 possies a game while running his guts out to remain OUTSIDE the play, because that is where the team can get the biggest benefit from his work.

Champion data. yeah ok.

No hate...

It's just some of the players listed are hardly elite for their positions.

Their algorithm is still way out of whack when Carlton who have been one of the worst teams defensively in the competition have 3 elite defenders and we who were far and away the best defence in the competition only have 1 elite defender according to them.

I know that team defence plays a role in this but seriously...

...Carlton were struggling for a place to hide Zac Williams.

The Williams inclusion is strange. I wonder if they lump his midfield games in to backline and so he gets bonus possessions. Saad wasn't elite last year either.

But the message might be less about defending which they struggle to quantify and more about how much they value elite half back ball use. There's a number of half backs in this list and the common thread is they either kick the ball really well or are aggressive runners from the backline to take the game on.

Even more so that Christian Salem fits into that category.

Can't believe Bowey isn't elite. 7 games, 7 wins, rising star nomination and a premiership.

That's elite.

We have the following who in my book are elite

CLARRY

MAX

TRACC

MAY

LEVER

SALEM

LANGDON

FRITSCH

Thats just for starters add the almosts Viney, Bowey,BBB, Kossy, Gus theres 13 straight up who would walk into ANY side then add Rivers, Sparrow to the mix and whadaya know, there's a premiership team right there!

Champion data, ?? Full of flaws!

It's by position so they're not comparing Sinclair with Steele bit against other general defenders.

Switkowski's stellar season consisted of twelve games for nine (count 'em, nine) goals so how can that possibly qualify him for the status of elite compared to other forwards?  Their ratings are laughable.

Champion data's way of assessing players is really not up to scratch and they should re-think this.

I think it does work to an extent for midfielders, given their job is generally to get more of the pill. But you cannot tell me all of Daniel, Williams, Saad and Hind are elite defenders. They don't even defend most of the time, so the only reason they are classified as 'defenders' is because they are in the backline. Kozzy puts more defence on than them and he's a forward.

Their system also doesn't take into account the fact that if you have a more even team, you are always going to have less players because you spread the load. Unless you just chip the ball around racking up stats - hence the dogs having 7 'elite' players. Too bad those 7 elite players couldn't get them a flag.... though they tried really hard and were only 74 points away....

Couldn't care less about champion data, but if you are going to go public with this dribble maybe re-think how you assess different positions/teams.

Yet the AA FB playing in statistically the best defense ever recorded by champion data isn’t elite.
Salem isn’t elite but Saad is?

40 game rolling average

so it would encompass a lot of his last season (or two, given injuries) at gw$ as well

The rolling 40-game average accounts for a few anomalies. Not saying they give a sensible result (for example, no way is Gawn below Hickey, Grundy and Darcy for 2022), but that's the metrics they use.

So the assessment average includes the 2020 season where Melbourne was indeed fairly average, although the rolling points also diminish in value over time. Finish near the top of the ladder this year and we'll have 10 elite players when two top-quality seasons (40+ games) come into the calculations.

However, the absence of Christian Salem from even the "above average" category is the most perplexing. Even on Champion Data's assessment, this year he was elite for Kicks, Handballs and Disposals, and above average for Marks, Tackles and Metres Gained, most of the metrics of an elite medium defender. Couldn't see Disposal Efficiency there either. Surely he is "elite" for that.

Going on players named in other teams, if Fritsch, May, Gawn, Salem and Langdon are not elite, Champion Data is measuring the wrong things.

Yeah I think their ratings over the last couple of seasons shows they need to readjust things if they want to maintain relevancy - I mean this stuff is really just newspaper fodder anyway, the clubs just want the stats I don't think they really care about the ratings.

Salem's exclusion doesn't make sense in this context though

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the
