Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Not if he has an agreement already done. A suitor might want him to take it easy and look after himself.

If this is so, then get him out of the team NOW. But I don't believe it is so. He, like Maxie, is still recovering from injury or illness and will only get better, we hope.

Picks 14 and 16 for a pick 3 at 20 years old on one of the league's biggest ever contracts and NAB rising star winner.

Nowhere near enough

You're taking a narrow-minded view.

For example, if we were to chat with a club and agreed on a trade up before acquiring those picks, then we'd take those picks obviously. I'm not for a second saying we'd take those picks to the draft.

No doubt we'll want more. I'm spit balling.

If we could turn 14, 16 and a late first rounder into 5 and 8 for example, you'd do it.

It's a reasonable line of thinking and is the likely outcome at this stage I believe. It would leave us with picks 14, 16, 20ish. Unless we packaged them up to get a solitary high pick then they're not great picks IMO. We used picks 3 and 12 (really pick 10 but bumped back after academy bids matched) to get Jackson and Kozzie. Freo used picks 7 and 8 to get Young and Serong. If we'd had 14, 16, 20 in that draft we would've got Miles Bergman, Cooper Stephens, and Sam Philip. Hardly regenerating a list compared to either of those top 10 combos. Picks outside the top 10 are still a very low hit rate, even with all the advancement in recruiting.

Not having a go and I agree your line of thinking is the most positive outcome. In my opinion though unless we get top 5-10 picks, we're going to be worse off. We're just trying the make the most of the poor hand we've been dealt and will likely have a net result of a weaker playing list if they're taken to draft. If there were proven key forwards on the market then I'd be trading those picks without a second. Picks at draft are overrated in my view though. Losing Brayshaw, an All Australian level half back in his prime, for a 10% chance at a best 22 player seems like a horrible deal. Take the proven player every time.

Yeh, well I didn't put much thought into it and clearly we wouldn't be happy with that and would be asking for more.

I was just coming up with a conservative example of how it could work but the possibilities are obviously many.

See above ^

Pick 14 and young

That would be a dream. I’d even take a straight swap for Young. Doubt it will happen though as he recently signed an extension until end of 2027.

His form is not bad enough to drop him and he still is a key structural player if we are chasing another flag. We still require a second ruck. In all honesty Weid or Mitch Brown could fill his role adequately if he can’t recapture his best form though. I really hope he starts putting in his best for the finals campaign. I’d hate to see him running the clock down and then leaving if that is his intention. It will be a massive kick in the guts if so.

Any discussion of trading him for just picks is mad. With a pick, what you hope to get, in your dreams, is a player like him, and there is a very good chance you won’t get it. He should only be traded for an established good player together with a high pick. He is a former pick 3, a winner of Rising Star, and a premiership player. We trade him for picks????!!!??

Problem is that he can walk out deal or no deal. Our bargaining position is weak and especially so if he’s determined to go west hell or high water.

And you do realise that the established good player has to agree to be traded, and want to come to Melbourne the club and city.

Well, prepare for the worst or prepare for a stalemate or prepare for LJ to re-sign haha

Our trading, list management and drafting has been first rate in the last 10 years so there's probably a lot going on behind the scenes at the club that we don't know about

Could be that the club is all over all the permutations with fall-back positions in place for all scenarios

I doubt we're going to be caught out unawares ... for instance, I doubt we'll be happy with an end of first round pick for Brayshaw.  Nor would we be happy about a team like Essendon landing one of our better players for nix (remembering that Sydney acquired Buddy for nothing ... apart from his salary)

Footnote; Not at all sure about Mitch Brown in the ruck!

I agree DJ. It’s two 1st rounders. Ideally they’d around a pick 5 and 15 at worst.  Jackson’s best is still ahead and he’s already shown how he can win a GF. That’s worth demanding a high price !!!

Hoping he stays but if he goes we would expect Freo to come up with a top 6 pick. They can swap and trade to get one. Plus a another current or future 1st as well. Also Meek as steak knives on top. That is a minimum. Our first ask would be more.

Freo got a pick 6 for Cerra and a future 3rd rounder.

Cannot compare a mobile tall who could be anything with Cerra.

We could end up being the laughing stock if he ends up a GOAT which is very possible - so it has to be a stellar deal..

I think if a satisfactory deal cannot be done he will sign for 2 years with us.

Lobb for #10 is way overs. He’s a late first at best.

Freo need to deal to get a top 5 pick and only then does that pick become acceptable.

Reread it

I have. 10, 14 does not cut it. You couldn’t even package that up to trade for top 5.

LJ was a pick 3 and now rising start, premiership player. This means (imo) a top 5 pick plus another 1st rounder.

If he was mid to late 20s then I’d agree regarding with your trade , but he’s still starting out with proven ability.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
