He was nowhere. 

It is ridiculous to drop our best and highest scoring forward after one poor game.

    Yep understand, no doubt if he has a niggle or 2 a rest should be on the cards.

    As much as Weitering has been huge this season and was something beyond even that against the Bulldogs, Josh Bruce kicked 5 and Aaron Naughton kicked 2 and the Dogs scored 16 goals for the game.

    At the moment Carlton are a team built around too few, admittedly great, players.  An optimistic Blues supporter would look at Richmond's situation just before they came good - a similar problem of having a strong core group but nothing like a full AFL-level 22 to work with. A pessimistic Carlton supporter would just console themselves with Collingwood looking like being on the brink of implosion.

    Carlton will struggle to contain Gawn/Jackson (they had a second gamer against them in the ruck for the Bulldogs), they will struggle to cope with our possible goal-kicking midfielders, and they aren't going to get the kind of lop-sided centre-clearance counts that kept Sydney in the game against us.

    Three things keep Carlton in this and keep me nervous -

    1. The difference between a Patrick Cripps bad game and a Patrick Cripps good game.

    2. Carlton must win to keep a realistic hope alive.

    3. If we drop our pressure, it brings any given opponent into contention.

    Just another one to add to the nerves: our starts haven’t been great this year and they could get a sniff if they’re on early. 

    Cripps is a damn good footballer, and he’s had days out against us before. Would love to see Harmes go back to his tagging roots to nullify his impact. 

    Carlton play unaccountable, defence free footy. If we bring the heat they will wilt. The doggies were on auto pilot for a while but as soon as they woke up they obliterated them. Cripps is not playing well, Williams in the midfield isn't working, Saad turns the ball over a lot. They really aren't all that much chop. Sydney they are not. I reckon we'll win comfortably.

     

    We haven't really smashed a team this year outside the Hawks in the last quarter. 

    mark my words, this week will be different. the way Carlton play is going to play right into our hands. they'll attack, make mistakes, bomb it long, May and Lever will have a field day,

    Would have thought that me suggesting that Brayshaw get off the 'Google machine' might have indicated the tongue-in-cheek nature of that portion of my post? I couldn't remotely care less what players do in their spare time (to quite some extremes short of assault or bigotry) and I'm not old enough to be Brayshaw's father. Also, like Jack Watts, the level at which he invests in his football career or even the MFC is entirely his prerogative - I don't demand he respect the jumper, but I do naturally prefer players who demonstrate their hunger through actions.  

    My primary point still stands though. I don't believe Gus is currently getting the best out of himself and has been surpassed by several team-mates when it comes to maturity and desire (even though I'm generally reluctant to make conclusions based on outside appearances). Great positioning or whatever is great, but a lack of evident intent at the actual contest and lazy skills execution shouldn't just then be overlooked. Also, if he'd made himself indispensable in the middle he'd still be there, and I wonder what the story would be right now if we had landed Isaac Smith. 

    I'm not biased. I didn't want Gus traded when the 'midfield balance' discussion came up last year and was almost a lone voice in defending him a couple of years ago against accusations of laziness vs. Sidebottom, which arose through some selective and misleading footage. I've even thought he's been very good at times this year as to his short delivery inside-50. Last time he was left out of the team - and went on to come third in the Brownlow - he struggled to adequately self-reflect, and I'm concerned that he's back in that comfortable space without the requisite attitude to improve.

    He was nowhere. 

    Your perception is amazing based on the last 3seasons of football where he clearly has been our best forward  by a mile after mid 2019. 
     

    He was  beaten by a very good defender (AA standard) in Rampe  and Usually still gets a goal or two in these situations. 
    But slipped in one and couldn't buy a mark under the pressure of the game.

    He will be all the better For the Gsme and I  bet he will kick at least 3 vs Blues.

    There is not a lot wrong at  the moment and I believe you are looking for Things that aren't there. 
     

    Turn your attention to say Melksham snd you may be onto something !

    Just had a quick read, and think some people want to make changes for the sake of making changes.

    On some of the points,

    Gawn is playing more defensive at the moment, helping the back 6 until Petty gets going, or when more cover is required.

    melksham IS under pressure and will either be dropped this week or needs a big game to hold his spot.

    TMac won’t go to a wing - he is dominating forward, no need to move him from there.

    Brayshaw is doing very well, playing his role and is a major reason our defense is so good. He could of course get more touches and for some people be more aggressive, but, don’t get it wrong, a major part of his role is structure.

    Not to get people too worried, as it isn’t major, but I have heard that Jackson may be out this weekend and the next with a possible short term injury. If that is the case, the Weed is in to play fwd/ruck. Maybe I should have started with this statement ???

    Wouldn't hurt Jackson to have a rest for a week or two.

    Any changes will be hard this week without a VFL game. Rest week for some next week. Danger game this week, need all available

    I understand where you are coming from with Fritsch’s output and I don’t deny that Melksham is under pressure.

    However, past output is meaningless really unless you are a star and Bayley plays in a ‘system’ team now where it’s not enough to kick 2 goals a game if you don’t help the team and play your role both with the footy and without.

    I can tell you - the direction from the coaches won’t be ‘make sure you get your 2 or 3 goals’...

    4. They just lost a game they really should have won and they know it. We represent an immediate second chance to grab the scalp they  just missed and reset their season.

    I believe as current front runners, management will be required, we are being hunted already, the Swans obviously did a huge amount of prep. And Carlton is a good team to practice list management with/against because they are what we used to be, front runners seeking glory with a lack of team defense.

    Gawn needs a rest, he also need to learn to put a hurt on those sniping him.

    Nev has an awesome record against Betts, never been beaten by him, give him a go. Only defensive change (for Hibberd)

    Change one of Melksham and Fritsch, not because we have to but this is a good game to practice in.

    TMac stays forward.

    Gus gets another game. 

    Everyone in the club is so positive about Petty, I am feeling like it is trust the coach time, lets give him a longer run.

    Or if they go with no change I am cool with that. But there is no way we don’t have few unspoken injuries.

    Club to buy a hyperbaric chamber though, and I want our top 10 sleeping in it 3 nights a week minimum.

    Lets say Weideman (famous name) plays this week due to an injury.

    What if he fizzles out like a cheap firecracker which he has done often in the past. Do we persist with him or send him back to the VFL....Just asking.

    The player i would love in this side is VDB.Sadly looks like he wont make it. Hes so strong. I saw him do a regulation tackle on an opponent..SCG?  nothing special but the opponent was toast. Mangled.

    VDB would be one of first picked in Sept if fit and playing well.

    Nobody deserves to be dropped.

    Jones has had a rest and could come back. He was lucky 300 came when it did but then stiff to be dropped after playing well versus Richmond and North.

    Weideman is incredibly unlucky to be on the outer. He could be our best forward.

    I like Chandler but ANB, Kossie and Spargo are going well.

    i'm afraid Vanders is finished and we are in trouble if we need him in finals, mainly because he is undisciplined and can't use the ball.

      And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

      There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

    • CASEY: Footscray

      At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

    • POSTGAME: Hawthorn

      Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
