Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

I'm more interested in Salem's future than anyone else on our list.

At the moment he's a good, occasionally very good, player. There is no doubt he has the ability to be much better than that.

Would another club, say Essendon or Hawthorn, make him an offer he can't refuse based on potential? Will he take another step forward this year and make himself indispensable at Melbourne? Or is he happy just being a top 10 - 15 player at a middling club?

Gawn will resign, but hopefully on a reduced rate. The other five could all be gone by year end.

Kane Cornes did a top 10 of free agents this morning and Gawn landed at about 5 or 6.

Bont and Cripps were top 2.

Hopefully Salem re-signs. We’ve done well retaining our top 10 picks (aside from Hogan who technically wasn’t a top 10 pick and who technically we got rid of)

kornes doesn't really rate ruckmen despite matress and lade giving him silver service in his best years

Zach Merrett would be a very handy addition to our midfield!

He was obviously unhappy towards the end of last year and if Essendon have another bad season (quite possible) i think we could get him. He'd be expensive so not sure if we could fit him into our cap but worth it i reckon. I'd sacrifice Gus to make it happen.

If he goes to Geelong or Richmond I'll cry.

The ONLY issue I have with SALEM is his tackles are like butter. Almost non existent. Kicks great makes good decisions but can't tackle. Get him outta the backline. Make him more into an attacking player

Agree Salo important but he will go consistently to a next level and resign Zi believe Maxy a given to resign.

Most interesting other is JJ  if he is given a chance by Goody to debut in AFL.

Not a lot to worry I don't think but we must sign Trac and Clarry During 2021.

I agree he'd be better value as a HFF or midfield player with his gr8 kicking skills.

There’s only one player on our list I am worried about losing this year and he’s not a free agent. If we have another garbage year and Oliver leaves that will be me pretty much done and dusted I think.

If Oliver doesn’t make some big changes to the way he plays, including significant improvements to playing “team first” footy, the Club May well consider that his trade value is attractive.
I can tell you that Yze ran a lengthy video session this week based on the positioning and work rate of our midfielders particularly when we don’t have the ball, and Oliver, Petracca & Viney were the continuous culprits of most examples.
I’m loving what I’m hearing about Yze’s intent to improve the defensive efforts, selfishness and team first acts of the big 3 egos.

So the senior coach has either not picked up on this weakness or ignored it. Why does it need Yze to point it out?

Gawn deserves the $$$ this time around.  I am sure he has played for unders for his current contract.

Thanks for the insight.  Oliver strikes me as someone who, rightly or wrongly, if he respects his coach ala Macca he will do as told.  Sounds like Yze is commanding that respect.  He will need to undo some 'ingrained' training from Oliver's early days of: 'see ball, get ball' and teach other tricks.

At first I was surprised to see Viney in the list but on second thoughts I'm not.  I fear that because of his status as past co-cap and current VC and having a 'bull' reputation he played to his own tune, often competing with our mids.  Good to see we have a coach to straighten him (and the others) out and that he is one of our midfielder team.    As VC he needs to set the example of 'team first' and be a leader in that regard for the midfielders and the rest of the team to follow.  Selfish play begets selfish play.

Yes, Yze is not going to let the big 3 get away with what Ben Matthew’s did. On a positive note, some of the Demonland whipping boys were pointed out and praised by Yze in the same videos for sacrificing their attacking position by moving to take the defensive positions that were often not occupied by the big 3.

I'm guessing the likes of ANB and Spargo were one of those names.

How did Trac, Oliver and Viney take the feedback @goodwindees

On the one hand I'm really pleased with what Yze is doing.  On the other hand I'm disappointed that in the 4 years of the Goodwin regime, the coaches collectively, weren't able to get an A-grade midfield to gel as a cohesive unit and to do the 'attitude-adjustment' required.

Hopefully, Yze sorts out the midfield roles of Oliver and Viney who seem to play or want to play the same role.

Vineys bash and crash has disguised a selfish style, AT times.

They will either get on board or you will see some very different midfield combinations to limit the time all three are in there together.

If you consider the fact of Olivers age and Trac only recently joining the midfield mix its not like they have had years of maturity together to gel. This is why we are coming into our window now as this is when players who may be good individually start to mature and gel into team first footy.

As far as free agency Kelly, Merrett and Laird in that order should be our targets.

Spot on Dazzle. Plus Vanders & Melksham.
Yze certainly delivered it in a positive, educational manner. It wasn’t done in a way to belittle those players but I think we’ll find far less tolerance for a lack of defensive running, not filling defensive positions in transition as well as stop plays, taking on the tackler 2 & 3 times, panic handballing etc.

Absolutely correct.  I believe there is a concern that we have too many that can only play inside midfield and nowhere else.  eg Oliver, Viney, Brayshaw, Harmes, Sparrow, Jordan & Vanders.
Yze wants team first footy and those not willing to conform will not be in there and will be considered trade worthy and it is only my speculation that the one with most trade value is the one that needs to conform the most.

GPS tracks the players who run the most metres towards the opposition’s goal when the opposition has the ball, the Club calls it Defensive Metres and particularly tracks all midfield & forwards on this stat.  Most on here would be very surprised if you saw that list of ranked players.  Once again, a Demonland whipping boy tops that list.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
