Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Nathan Jones Locked in for 2021

For me, this is almost a purely list profile decision and cultural. He has experience and despite it mostly being in losing teams, he may be able to provide a better half forward option than Melksham, if he lays tackles.

Let's wait and see.

Tired of reading about culture and Jones all in the same sentence. Our culture has been poor for decades but completely pathetic ever since he’s been at the club. He’s done bugger all to improve it and if he is the heart and soul of the club then there is bugger all to it. Results speak loudly and he’s been the standard bearer for the crappiest culture in the competition.

Perhaps because the club decided that he would be better value than his replacement who would be the last player selected in this year's compromised draft.

Perhaps.

However, some gems have come from even the rookie draft.  Back yourself to get some new talent in the door.

In 2 minds about this - will make up my mind when squad numbers are confirmed and we see which other players are retained.

As @titan_uranushas said it won't be on much coin (hopefully).

No Guarantee he'll get his 6 games next season either way.

I just hope that Jones"y gets to his 300th this year and provides a bit of grunt and leadership in the process, otherwise if he misses the mark I feel sure that he can bring a lot towards the development of our younger brigade.

Show them Nathan Jones............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That’s the way i see it.

Playing 300 games is irrelevent

Robert Flower played 272 and he is the greatest of all time

A stupid football club?

Have a look back at how the club handled. Jnr McDonald (capt), Russell Robertson, Brad Green(capt), Cam Bruce, Jeff White.

All showed the door too early.

What do we do in 2022 if Jones plays 5 games in 2021?

Your question is somewhat academic Chazz.

I see the scenario's like this:

1.  Jones snaps his leg off at the hip in pre-season and retires imeediatley;

2.  Jones plays his 300th game on Queens Birthday at an MCG with as many MFC supporters as the pandemic will allow;

3.  We win the flag with Jone on 299 and no one cares if we carry another veteran into 2022 or not.

We got Jordan Lewis to 300 games and then some.  No way Jones doesn't play 300 next year - take it to the bank.

So in this Garry makes the point about list size changes due to COVID.  Has this been announced/confirmed by the AFL?  And if not when?

Clubs are making decisions now on who to sign up, who to trade for over the next few weeks to a month.  I would have thought that the time for this to have been confirmed would have been about Rd 12, not still be a topic of discussion now.  Unless I'm missing something.

Gary actually made another point that the FD cap is also being reduced and so perhaps he's been given this contract as a sort of player/assistant coach. As long as the club was absolutely straight with him that he is not in the best 22 and so games will not come easy for him we won't be any worse off that instead recruiting a player with pick 60+. I would expect that his salary would also have been reduced as well.

I think it's good that in amongst so much bad stuff happening that there was a little room for sentiment, and perhaps this is also a sign that lists will not be culled as much as we thought.

IIRC I believe he stayed on the field to the bitter end with his injury. In his final season Flower reinvented himself as an effective forward. Dipper was school mate of mine. A perfect gentleman in real life.

I have to disagree. If we moved him on at the end of 2018 that would be a repeat of the McDonald situation.

its 2 years removed.

he is a great of the club but this leaves me perplexed.

he hasn’t had an impact on games fir a long time and he is simply passed it.

I will cheer him on of course but a hard decision was needed and the club again didn’t make it.

I’ve been supporting this club for a very long time now.

I won’t list all of the hard decisions it has made because, quite frankly, it’s too depressing.

Rest assured though, this club has a history of making hard decisions. Pity virtually all of them have been wrong.

Jones will add value to this player group next year. He’ll train hard, he’ll share his knowledge, and he’ll continue to bring leadership - much of which might very well be off-field.  But that still counts.

I genuinely hope Jones becomes a 300 gamer. I hope also Goodwin doesn’t gift any games to him.

IMO the club has shown maturity and class in extending Jones’ contract, maturity and class that (but for discrete periods, eg, the Roos years) it has generally lacked when it comes to these issues.

Hats off to Josh (again).

Yes....this is what Club culture is all about.  He will get games if he is good enough, if not we haven't shoved a leader out the door like we did with Junior.

Bad call by both Nathan and the Club. So we are paying for the stupid decsion regarding James McDonald a decade ago.

Best games this year were against the Crows and Pies. Both basket cases of teams at that time.

But then if someone offered me 250K a  year to run around in the secounds I'd take it.

But gee, life moves on and so should Nathan.

Your bottom paragraph shows that you are letting sentiment cloud your judgement.  Lewis played his 300th in 2018 - the year that we made the preliminary final.  In his last season, 2019, he played 12 games for a team that finished 2nd last, and also spent a considerable amount of time in the reserves.  When our season was well and truly cooked, he played the last 8 games of the season.  He didn't play his first game of 2019 until Round 5 (arguably you could see our season was over as early as that).

Jones has 6 games to get to the 300 mark.  I feel that 2019 was his opportunity to get to 300 - he missed 9 games of the season, partially due to form, and also his body breaking down.

I would bet my balls on him retiring at the end of 2020 if he could've squeezed that extra 6 games this season.

For mine, he plays at Casey until he plays a solid block of games in top form, and can prove that his body can hold up.  If he gets in there because of that, then I'll be stoked to see him get to 300.  But if he gets to 300 in the type of form he has shown for most of the past 2 seasons, then it will mean we have another year of missed finals.  I'll see you at the bank... ?

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
