Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Viney Signs Until 2025

Viney had a great season and is an essential player. He’s Melbourne through and through. A leader despite having the captain mantle unceremoniously removed. Trading him Would be worse than delisting Junior McDonald. Good on you Jack Viney! A hero of our club!

Very glad he has signed on and clearly wants to be a Demon for life.

Players like this don’t grow on trees.

Gawn, Viney, Petracca, Oliver, May, Salem and Langdon are absolutely core players and must keep along with our young talent in Rivers, Pickett, Jackson, Fritsch

I couldn't agree more DeeZee, Jack is the jewel in the crown and now a Dee for life couldn't be happier just looking for a few more signatures to trickle through and my anxiety levels will drop right off

Well done Jack and Dee's for getting this done - keep up the great work.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is one player that had to stay at the club, for Viney to leave It would have just been a bridge too far. Is he worth a five contract probably not.

But and it is a  big but he is a Viney, previous captain and a current vice captain. Who played his heart when we could not beat time with a stick.
If he had walked I suggest a large number of members would have walked as well. There is IMO more to his signature than just his playing ability.

Very well said

On balance great news. I'm wary about the 5th year and the role we intend to deploy him in, but the latter is completely within our control and if we do it right, we can make it work.

Just such utter rubbish.

GWS is a perfect example of how classy players aren't enough.

Look at Richmond's recent premiership 22s: players like David Astbury, Dyan Grimes, Brandon Ellis, Toby Nankervis, Liam Baker, Kamdyn McIntosh and Jack Graham were in those sides. Not exactly "classy", but very much "heart and soul".

And as to the "season stats", none of which you've cited, here are some:

  1. 11th in the comp for CPs per game;
  2. 12th in the comp for clearances per game;
  3. 8th in the comp for inside 50s per game;
  4. 13th in the comp for centre clearances per game.

In all of those stats, the players above him are almost universally the competition's elite players (we're talking Oliver, Petracca, Fyfe, Neale, Cripps, Dangerfield, Bontempelli, Adams, Treloar, Liberatore, Naitanui).

And whilst he did, fairly, finish equal second for turnovers per game, the players around him are also elite (Prestia, Treloar, Martin, Petracca and Brodie Smith are all equal-4th or higher on that metric).

Great post. Some people just don’t want to accept facts, a bit like Dan Andrews supporters

Now the contract is done and dusted and his house is in order, looking forward to seeing an injury free Jack rekindle his 2018 form and help Melbourne get back in the finals and further onwards and upwards. 2021❤️?

No, why would you? The guy is a gun & our midfield will have injuries at some point in the season.

True, but I just think we could get more value from a similarly rated player, in a different position

On the surface it's one year too many, but I would have thought we'd front load at least the first 2-3 years quite heavily.

I like that he's signed from a culture stand point. I remain staunch in my belief that he needs to play forward or defensive mid/tagger. I'd be happy if he was collecting 15 possessions a game as long as he's mauling the opposition in the tackle count and making the right decisions when he does win the ball.

My best 22 would have him starting in the forward pocket alongside Pickett and Weideman.

No, bookmark my comment coz I reckon this decision will come back and bite BIG TIME!

Still haven't answered my question PF What is the bite going to be ?
Tell  us all

Why are you predicting doom  because of this ONE decision that if not completed NOW would have set our future 5 years Back irreparably and the momentum gained in 2021 ( more than many are finding in their reviews ) especially with our IMO elite draftees Riv Dogga and Kossie, and youth eg Lockhart Fritsch plus Sparrow etc.

Our development of players is far more a worry than you classifying one of our true legends resigning fir 5 years a disaster !!!

Mark my words this will be a filip fir all if you really look at the counter side of Jack not recommitting.

But prey tell WHY it will be so Biting for us??? PF

good result for the club as he is definitely a heart and soul player.

Now we need to balance the midfield better and play Jack to his strengths.

Agree and I love his heart for the fight(just like his Dad).

But gee I hope someone helps him with his right side over the term of his future with us.

Don’t be ridiculous, l agree 5 years is to much, but you don’t offer a 1 year deal to a player that just finished 3rd in the b&f

Unless the vote givers have blinkers on! As I put up his stats for the year previously compared to Oliver in fact I would say his year was  nowhere near a 3 rd in B&F ! Go on check his stats for yourself. I and other rated Oliver as easily 3rd in B & F.  2 years would have been enough with clear trigger for a third. 5 years for Viney? Unbelievable!

Ok, because you have put money into a limited footballer with the potential of little to no improvement. His game has not evolved from day 1

1 Tries to take on player after player after player and more often than not gets caught or is panicked into a poor disposal.

2 Will not honour the first option, or second

3 Kicking is adequate but not elite

4 No Right side

5 Too one dimensional.

6 What if ... His foot injuries return?

Ok thats my take on WHY this decision will bite us. IMV Take it or leave it!

Ok over to you, can you give me 5 Compelling reasons for a 5 year deal???

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
