Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I don't think Billy is quite good enough but Goodwin/FD completely stuffed up his development.

I remember him progressing in 2016 and then he went back into his shell as he was yo-yoed in and out of the team in 2017. This was clearly an important time in his development, because he's never recovered.

Without fail, he holds the ball up and questions his decision making every time he gets it. In 2016, he didn't. Whatever's been said to him during 2017 rocked him and it's probably time he tried a new environment.

Player development is important but so is winning. You have to pick the best available side every week and if Billy was in it one week and not the next the onus was on him to become better not for us to pick a worse side.

Agreed that he shouldn't have been a walk up starter, but it's not like we've been blessed with wingers or outside players in the last few years.

I don't really care that Billy was drafted as an inside mid. He won't make it as an inside mid and needs to make it on the outside or in another position.

But his ‘natural’ position is at the coalface, and in our side he’s a long way back in the queue

He’s a classic ‘good, ordinary’ player

Jetta - a heap of power, limited endurance, excellent overhead

Stretch - no power, good endurance, poor overhead

He has to go play wing, high half forward or as the up the ground back flanker. I don’t mind him in the sweeping flanker role but that’s a long way from a lock down defender.

Jetta also has fantastic lateral movement, something Stretch does not.

Jetta was born to be a lockdown small. Stretch has neither the strength nor mongrel to do that job.

Yes, he might not succeed there, but I reckon it’ll be tried.

The decisions with ball in hand in the ANB role are much simpler than the decisions on the wing. Kick goal, kick to leading teammate, kick to top of the square.

Billy's exacting personality hurt him up the field because he is afraid of making bad decisions.

He never got the chance to play ANB's simpler role so comparisons are not valid.

And yet you compared him with Lewis earlier in the thread, when Lewis played a fair bit of this year as a lock down forward. Why does every player have to be compared to ANB as well? Billy got a heap of opportunity to show what he could do in his best spot, is say there's a chance we might rookie him if the suns don't, but he's had a lot of chances to own the position we're clearly trying to fill this trade period.

I believe you've confused me with someone else. I've never compared either Stretch or ANB with Lewis and I haven't mentioned Lewis in this thread.

I can leave ANB out of my suggestion and simply make it "why wasn't Billy tried as a defensive forward because this  is likely to suit his attributes and be his best position."

I won’t shed any tears at his departure, has failed to become anything more than an average player. Can’t imagine we’ll get much for him, good luck to him at GC.

This has all gone quiet, hasn’t it?  The Suns have got one zillion new picks, and there is a queue of players linked to going there.  Think Stretch would be a low priority for them.  Will be interesting to see what happens over the off season - maybe do a Jetta, get rookied, work his backside off and become a valuable player.

If he gets to the Suns I doubt we would get anything more than a 3rd round pick at absolute best.

Yep. Free to a good home token trade.

I think it's gone quiet because there's not much to say.
He'll get there if he wants to be there. Good luck to the kid.

I wouldn't be upset if we offer him another year but really I can't see what the point is. He's never been able to nail down a position with confidence within the club and really just looks average and unsure of himself when he breaks into the team.

I'd delist both him and JKH without much hesitation.

Yes like to keep Billy Stretch.  Tell him two simple rules.  Move quickly and play on.  Kick it as far as you can.
He has the talent and pace and endurance. His stopping after possession and chipping 15 metre kicks are killers.
Just needs some confidence imo

If we had a choice between Billy or JKH then I'm choosing Billy.

One of the most professional players at our club and with 2 kids coming through from the draft early on, I wouldn't mind billy taking them both under his wing Clayton Oliver style.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
