Interesting. I reckon I'm normally on the same page as you but JKH made me want to vomit.

Yes we usually are.  I think selection this week will tell the tale.

We need some speed and given the big ground over there, the run that these players provide will be critical.

I know Bugg struggles to kick straight in front of goal but how’s his form been of late? His ability to run both ways and apply pressure could be important.

Not too sure on buggs form. Seems his papers have already been stamped.

Too hard really without knowing where rehab is up to for the ex bomber duo but my guess is something like.

Out: Hunt, Peds,

In: Hibbert/Wagner, Melksham/Hannan

Has anyone watched Kent closely at VFL level? Apart from kicking three this week has he elevated his game since being back and built some form? If not then I fear rushing him back in with the idea of him playing at the standard we have seen from him in previous seasons rather then current. I feel like thats what happened with Hunt. Brought in less because of form but more because of what he could do based on performance in previous years.

I have a feeling Bugg might play if Melksham doesn't get up.

I also worry about AVB's fitness. He's tiring late in the last two games and looks off the pace when the opposition is transitioning.

Shame that Weideman isn't coming along as we had all hoped.  Talls take longer than other plalyres but most of the other 'Talls' in his draft year have made or starting to make an impact.  Even McKay (Carlton) and Francis (Ess) are getting regular games.

So I'm getting a bit worried about whether he will get there to replace McD or Hogan when needed.

Edit: Just saw 'chook fowler's' post on Weideman.  Totally agree but he doesn't seem ready.

Can I restate what I said several weeks ago when I watched Weid at training. The kid is no longer a kid - he looks the part. Weed now has some agility, he no longer has a David Neitz turning circle. He also has lateral vision. When I went down to training I thought, jeez, is Maynard back from injury, but no it was Weid - he now moves like a midfielder. Sure he's not mega-quick like Frosty or Clayton, but he's hardly slow now.

When he got his chance v St Kilda, he was part of a top-heavy forward line and blew it. For some reason he just didn't have the confidence to go back and nail his shots that day - but I suspect that day will come soon and hopefully he can turn it on in one of the next two games for us.

And then if the rules are changed to limit zones, he will be an even better player.

I'm not sure Hibberd is right to go yet.

I hope we don't rush him in because on the off chance we make finals he is vital to us putting up some kind of a show.

I don’t think they will be rushing, I believe Goody said he could have played yesterday.

That selection reeked of arrogance and lack of respect for the opposition, and it probably cost us finals.

Bring in Bugg to improve our goal kicking accuracy.

Seriously though

Sam is developing nicely, he has averaged 2.5 goals a game at Casey and takes around 6-7 marks a game.  The games he played for Melbourne he didn't dominate but he took some nice grabs and looked more comfortable.  Is he a regular AFL player yet no but I reckon he will be in 2019 and will play his role if needed over the next 2 weeks.

Hes played 5 games and I am pretty sure hes not had more than 15 touches in any of them.

This was a guy who had 25 possessions and kicked 3 goals in a win over Adelaide his debut season way back in 2015.

Hes made zero progress at AFL level and has even gone backwards.

I remember his game well that day vs the crows, thinking to myself, gee we have a player here. What a disappointment it has been for young Jay since then. Don't know why he hasn't progressed at all.

OUT - Spargo, Garlett, Hunt,

IN - Kent, Melksham, Hibberd, Man up, Kick straight, Forward structure

Kent for Spargo. Spargo lacked penetration in his kicking on the weekend. At least 2-3 goals missed because of this. Something Kent has no problem doing.

Garlett struggling. Melksham straight swap. My mate believes Melbourne players are avoiding Garlett on the field and he is on the outside of the group. Anyone else notice this yesterday?

Hibberd if ready has to come in for the injured Hunt.

Yes he is struggling.

We bomb the ball into the fwd line. We don't look for anyone. And they certainly won't kick it to Garlett when he is 1 against 3

When we do try to spot up a leading fwd like Hogan in the last we sit it 4m over their head so that Heeney or Aliir can take the mark of the year.

He likes 2 tackle but seems very quick 2 give off the ball rather than be hit. He's too nervy a player lacks composure not up 2 it.

JHK needs more time, he will develop, he has shown he has the skill just needs more time to get more bulk and endurance. I would like to see Trac on the wing his long penetrating kicks take can catch the opposition out.

As for team changes, Depends on Melksham and Hibbard being available they are walkup starters.  Pedo and Hunt are the obvious outs.

I like the idea of Bugg and Kent coming in, for Garlett and Spargo.

How many games do people think we have lost in the last two years at the selection table? I see it mentioned a fair bit, curious to peoples thoughts. 5-10?

Too many, and it causes a lack of form and readiness in so many of our players  who are re-cycled back into the side from Casey. It is a FD and coaching problem more than anything else. There is no spread, there is limited initiative.

Hannan is very inconsistent, can totally go missing. I’d rather Bugg!

Both Bugg & Kent should be highly motivated to perform if they want to continue their AFL careers!

Jones is cooked. We have choked majorly each of the past 3 seasons and he's been a catalyst. Need to make tough decisions. He may well stay as captain but we'll continue to turn to water so long as he is top 22.

Jones has to take some of the blame for two consecutive flame outs and a third being on the cards.

But we're not dropping him and continually saying things like "we need to make tough decisions" doesn't change that.

Well said Clint. Please DL nerds provide stats on this.

My suspicion is that he has been abysmal in every one of our recent losses and very good in every one of our wins - downhill skier (smoker).

The two exceptions that I can recall are that he was pretty handy against Richmond at night - even snagging one from 50m out.

He also beat two players to get the key matchwinning handball against Adelaide three weeks ago - after a pretty quiet night mind you.

He made a great start to year, but has fallen away and his lack of second efforts are becoming the norm. I've said a few times that he probably needs a stint down back just to give him perspective and remind him how important it is to keep contesting. But now it seems he has a bit of a niggle anyway so there may be more to his loss of form.

One of my biggest disappointment yesterday was in third term on members wing and he and his opponent (think it was Aliir) were coming to fly for a mark and Lloyd was in front and backing in courageously and Hoges didn't even hammer Lloyd with a knee up fly - which would have been a fair tactic and the expected tactic.

Chicken or egg? And we've only had two recent losses, and yes in both games he was poor.

But 22 disposals, 9 marks, 2 goals against Richmond. That was the week after 24 disposals, 3 marks and a goal vs Hawthorn.

3 goals in Round 1 vs Geelong. 3.2 and 5 tackles against St Kilda.

His form in the first half of the year was better than his second half, but that's not solely because of him.

Disposal count so far is: 15, 14, 16, 14, 14.

1 goal in those five games. But a tackle count of 8, 4, 2, 4, 5.

I'm not a fan but I suspect that tackle count, a few recent wins, and a lack of obvious replacements at Casey have kept him in the side.

The Heeney MOTY was a classic example. Hogan on a lead but Pedersen miskicks it so poorly that he has to stop to try to contend for it, Heeney's trailing him and won't be able to do anything if the ball is kicked to Hogan's advantage but instead gets to jump all over him and look like a star.

Our inside 50 kicking has been woeful all year, with players like Melksham, Oliver and Salem standing out for being obvious exceptions.

JKH was drafted at pick 40 back 6 years ago. He's 24 years old next season, and in the oldest 1/3 of players on the list now. He's hasn't had an injury since 2016, so has had plenty of time to build his endurance and strength. He's simply not up to it. As a club, these are the types of players we need to move on quicker from the list. They should only be kept for depth if lacking in a specific area.

The changes for this week should be:

In - Hibberd, Melksham, Kent

Out - Hunt, Pedo, Spargo

Watch On The Couch and listen to the crew/Jonathon Brown call out Hogans positioning and leading patterns, they're atrocious. Not always the midfields fault

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
