Dear Simon, the current forward / ruck structure was working fine. Why have you not replaced Weideman with Pedersen, so that he can back up Gawn in the ruck? I get that Smith is in better form, but he can't ruck. Now you'll either go back to your stupid idea of rucking Harmes, or you'll drag McDonald away from the forward line. Both ideas are just plain dumb. Please get your act together before you cost us more wins. Signed, Poita.

Dear Poita,

Do you have anything positive to say?  Ever?

Signed, Wiseblood.

Hmmmm 3 guys with under 10 games experience with Hunt, Tyson, Pedersen and Gartlett in the 2s. Hope Goody knows what he's doing we're meant to be playing for finals not in development mode!

Hmmmm, this weekend Clarkson has selected 5 guys with under 10 games experience in Harry Morrison, James Cousins, David Mirra, James Worpel, and Mitch Lewis.

Hope Clarko knows what he's doing, as he's stated he thinks they can win the GF this year.  They're not in development mode.

I picked him this week only because I thought they would want him to play second ruck and free up T Mac as they've been doing in previous weeks.  Happy for 'Bull' Smith to get his reward for great form at Casey.

@Drunkn167 and @Rusty Nails, I stand corrected re: selection.  Very happy for Smith to get a run and hopefully he can add to our flexible forward line in a positive manner when T Mac gives Gawn a chop out in the ruck!

I thought he'd probably play too, but clearly they'd rather spell Gawn with Tom McDonald.

Goodwin, rightly, does not rate Pedersen as a second ruck, or as a key forward.

I think I'll keep the Pro in my name...

I completely understand why people thought Pedersen would’ve been picked, but for some to attack the coaches to pick Bull who is playing at a much higher level then Pedo at the moment, is pretty bad.

I would love Pedo to get back into great form and play Seniors but right now Smith is just better, and I’ve been saying that for weeks haha

I'd just like to send my sincere condolences to the Dom Tyson fan club.

I really feel for you, but clearly, you're on your own now. @Wrecker45 you can pass it on to the crew.

In other news, it's nice to see Smith get another shot, I thought he showed a bit in the limited game time we saw from him. Although his inclusion gives me the impression we'll see T-Mac in the ruck at times.

I'm not worried about this game in the slightest.

I think we're likely to see Bull come in for Weid & rotate with Trac picking up some mid time...with Tommy doing the relief ruck duties.

I might be wrong but I don't see Pedders as a direct replacement, for me he doesn't play the forward role well enough and his ruck work has been average this season.

Then again they might want to keep the same structure and use the one soldier down another steps up theory with Pedders stepping up.

It will be interesting to see how the FD view this.

Seems like my thinking was in line with the FD.

I like their thinking...

I like Pedo but I knew he was finished when he couldn't get a game after kicking 5 against Richmond. I knew Bull would get a game ahead of him.

Tyson at the crossroads he's no longer in our best 22 and when we get Gaff in the team next year it's going to be harder for him to get a game.

Love your work. Keep it up.

Bull has certainly earned his spot. Hope he lives up to his name. Good to see form rewarded. A spell in the twos won’t hurt Tyson.

I hope you're right but im worried now. Kreuzer is no dud.

But this game is now a test of the teams resilience and ability of others to step up in the forward line when tmac is rucking.

Petracca I'm looking at you.

This post is not a call for Pedersen btw. Others here have seen him and agree smith is the correct selection. As recruiters at draft time say always pick the best player not the best positional option.

................... well  your call on Fritta was spot-on, so I'm more than happy to climb aboard the Bull train.

ps.  I love it when players are rewarded when their Casey form becomes irresistible.

TMac will relief ruck instead of stints on the wing. Smith will play the forward/wing role TMac had been doing. Structurally we’ll be fine and Smith had been the clear standout at Casey by all reports. He comes in to the side flying.

Great to see effort get reward. I’m very excited now.

Somewhat borders on the obvious, not to be snide just observational.

Its that action which causes a little surprise given Tommy currently possibly our most potent fwd...and we move him away ?

Smith is, or has shown glimpses of ability but hell need to bring his AAA+++ game imho.

Hope he does.

Casey and  training  watchers : is Bull Smith big and strong enough to fill in ruck work?

Haven’t seen much of him at all.

Not surprised by Smith's inclusion.
Pedersen is a good player but in many respects he is a poor man's Tom McDonald.

On the other hand it seems that we have just got some form of structure in the side.

Let's hope the selection committee have this one right. Their batting average on changes has not been great in recent times.

PS... Have just seen that the forecast for Sunday has been amended and rain (1-2 mm) is expected. On that basis I think going in with one less tall makes sense.

Called the tim smith over pedo selection after last weeks game. why? because we should be hedging our bets on developing two key forwards in the seniors. so both he and weid will cover for each other, in event of injury or in the hopefully unlikely event of losing one of them to another club should a big offer be made. We're also creating trade value that could net us something we need somewhere else should one player seek opportunity elsewhere because they've been superceded by the other.

if theyre both developing w senior time they can also become interchangeable with mid/fwd role like Tmac and hoges and perhaps even all get a game in there together.

Looking forward to seeing Tim Smith get his opportunity and seeing the boys get around him for a first goal.

Bull is a great inclusion, as is Viney.

who relieves Kreuzer (I’m not talking about Bolton, by hand, at half time)?  If Max rests when zkreuzer does, Harmes could even ruck.  Suspect T Mac might go through the middle.  Can’t see the Carlton defense sticking with TMac and Hogan.  Bull and Fritter add another level of challenge.  And if Max goes forward, this will bust open.  We just have to win the contests.

Also, I can’t believe the bluebaggers supporters.  They beat druggies and now they are up and about.  One supporter couldn’t get his mates to go to a match- now has 6 seats for Sunday and about 10 idiots that want them.   I dislike playing Carlton, and hope we smash them.

This is amazing. Can’t wait to see him playing in a massive win over the Blues at the MCG.

Bull hasn’t kicked a goal the the G (after he got killed by Rance last year) so his first goal everyone better be up and about!

Well let me give you some relevance.

If we'd selected 3 eighteen year olds under 10 games you may have a point (may).  But Spargo doesn't look at all out of place in the AFL, nor does the mature recruit Fritsch, and Smith is another mature recruit who's 27.

I'm surprised you've been concerned by such a NON issue.

Fair enough.

Just to me that bench looks light on for experience as the consistency of a player's performance doesn't tend to level out until they have at least 40 or 50 games up (some like Jack Watts never get there). Yes there are exceptions like Clayton Oliver. But I acknowledge Spargo and Fritsch have been very good so far this season, Smith I'll be interested to see what he can do.

I understand your point, but most teams can cover a few inexperienced players.

West Coast, who are top 2 and 7/1, have had more debutantes in 2018 than any other club - 6.

filthy on tyson out and pedo should be well in front of smith

With Viney's pending return the timing of Tyson's ordinary game last week obviously didn't help his cause FD but might still play a significant role yet in this year's proceedings, depending injuries / form etc.

Smith hasn't had a fair run at it yet at AFL level to really see what he can bring.

I see him as a somewhat different style of forward to Pedders and even Hulk / T-Mac to some degree.  More of a traditional lead up medium forward that might offer us a good optional mix between the 3 plus "maybe" a bit more pressure at ground level inside 50 or a tad higher up field when needed also.

Like the idea of giving him a block of matches, as we have given Pedders & Weids in the past (more than once), to see what he can bring individually & whether the forward set up clicks at some stage.

If he turns out ok (or better!) what's to lose?  We potentially find yet another decent "go to" option and start building our scoring potential / depth even more.   Providing even more possibilities and  headaches for our opponents.   If he is getting a 3rd string defender he might be the one on the day that takes the opp to the cleaners and kicks 4 to 6 goals once in a while!

But as we all know the AFL is a tough caper and the complete reverse could happen.

Hoping he can bring his best 'brand' of game on Sunday though!

Go Demons!

I’m not used to our depth I guess, amazes me to have so much talent in the VFL. I’m still recovering from a decade when we could barely put an AFL standard 15 players on the park let alone have 4 or 5 spare ones!

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
