The tv captured clearly what Lewis said to the umpire before 50 metre penalty.

Can anyone lip read and tell me if he used f word to umpire.

You know what, I blame this piece of play for our loss. Gawn, Oliver, Petracca missed but that happens a dozen times a game. Using that logic you could say Menzel kicks a couple extra goal that he missed down the other end and we lose by 15 points.

This "senior" player, in a "leadership role" gave away a 50m penalty and nearly certian goal over words that came out of his mouth towards an umpire.

Words.

I know he played a good game and white line fever/heat of the moment but because of his use of the English language he handed the opposition a goal.

To me this is completely unacceptable, let alone from an on field leader. No excuse.

Yes. He said the F word.

"Ohhhh #$&@ off!"

Camera then shakes around a bit so you can't tell what is said. IMO calls 50 for abuse.

When he is back on the goal line he says something that I can't work out. Then he says...

"Take a @#"$ing spray!"

Horrible leadership. The free may or may not have been there. No point forcing a goal.

He had a good second half though

he most definitely said F to the ump.. i am not annoyed at lewis in the least. leaders have tempers too and this call was bullshyte. he was going for the ball and making the cat accountable. i beileve that lewis genuinely was flabbergasted at the call and realised it was a key point in the game. he lost his temper and no doubt regrets that, but i'd rather have a guy like him out there than a stoned-looking defender with seemingly no worries.

Could have said it in Japanese to that maggot , and he still would have given 50. Looks to me like Lewis is marked and Abblett will win the Brownlow. Never seen a bloke kiss rss like him!!!

There was no free kick and the umpire deserved the abuse.  Of course his thin skin couldn't handle it so he decided to punish us instead of being a man.

I want to thank Jordan for doing what I wanted to do at the time.

Stupid thing to do.

Bad free kick, but what’s the best case scenario of yelling and swearing at an umpire??

Was brought in for leadership and a cool head- displayed neither.

Good seeing him care. Could’ve easily not given a [censored] and just collect his retirement cheque.

He did this stuff with the Hawks.  It's nothing new, other than the fact that he had a gun side around him where doing that stuff didn't matter as much.

It wasn't great, but one decision doesn't make a game.

We got the better end of the umps after this so maybe they thought twice before paying a free against us.

But it did make a long shot at goal a certain goal, Wise.

How many times this season will he have these pointless brain fades? I love watching Lewie when he's on, such as the second half, but it doesn't take much to not mouth off to the umps or refrain from whacking a guy off the ball, like last year

He appeared to say " you are f...ing joking".

To me that is not a 50. It is not like saying "you are a f...ing idiot".

It is in the heat of battle and that is surely not personal abuse.

Yes he shouldn't say it, but umpires have got to be better than that.

The umpire could simply say " no I am not and the next thing you say will be 50".

Players mouth off all the time.

Then you could also say that our loss was Fritsch's fault. His smothered kick, by not going back over the mark properly, led to the ball being kicked to the 50:50 contest, which led to the free kick, the 50m and the goal.

Attributing the loss to one specific event is so difficult.

That being said, agree that you want your leaders to show passion - in the right way. Vince in the 3rd term in a contest was a good example - Lewis not so much.

The umps will never get respect if they have a cry about a player questioning a call. It happens in every sport. Unless they insult the umpire or get personal then they should grow some balls and get the game go.

I'd prefer the lip readers to channel there efforts to decoding what Goody screamed in the box after Clarry went for the right foot banana? Something about a having a [censored] left foot perhaps? Or "Why didn't i [censored] schedule wrong-foot kick training last week!"

I'm obviously in the minority here, I don't have any real issue with what Lewis did. I thought it was a soft free too.

Just like Maxy's missed goal, the loss shouldn't be blamed on this one incident. They out scored us by another 25pts in the second quarter, also kicking 1.7 in the last hurt.

Yes, he's one of our leaders, but he did the same occasionally at the Hawks too, so we knew what we were getting. Considering the leadership he gives us for the most part, I'm happy to take the minor indiscretions. ?

Disagree with some here. It was a 1v1, he beat the opponent in a pivotal contest and the umpire gave a soft free. Lewis is an emotional player, and yeah, it turned the tide, but I certainly don't blame him for the loss. At the time Geelong was at like 85% forward 50 efficiency, so they would have likely scored regardless.

It was an old fashioned spray for a poor free kick. Mind you, Ablett complained after every single one of the three holding the balls against him, and not a single 50 was paid.

Terrible call to blame Lewis for reacting in the heat of the moment. Ump seemed a bit think skinned but we don't know what he said 100%, but i think it was the classic your [censored] joking.

Everyone who blames him for giving away the goal should go after all the players who had a part to play in letting the Cats score 14. Just like how Gawn's miss can happen at anytime, so can a ref overreacting to a players response.

So now that Lewis has been partially exonerated for swearing as a leader in the eyes of the supporter-base, I'd like to add big Max to that list. Many have commented on here that his miss wasn't good enough for a leader of our club, but I have no idea what leadership has to do with the kicking technique and accuracy of a seven-foot ruckman. ?

Disgraceful umpiring decision.  Would have been extremely hard not to give the umpire a spray out of pure frustration.  That little Geelong b!tch, who I noticed on three separate occasions duck his head trying to get high contact, was playing for the free and the umpire was sucked in.  A very frustrating occurrence on the footy field and while I bet he regrets I don't blame him in the slightest.  Probably would have done the same thing in his shoes.

I don’t think it was humble, resilient or respectful and I’m sure Goody will make that point to him. I see a minor distinction between a skill error in the heat of battle or late in the game when the player is cooked vs. gobbing off and giving away a goal.

we missed the finals last year by 9/10 of f*** all. Should do better Lewy (great game otherwise).

Posted

If I was an umpire i'd much prefer to cop an occasional spray like the one from Lewis than to have Ablett winge to me every time he is beaten to the ball or tackled. The umpire should award a free kick against wingeing.

Yep, if Fritsch didn't do the Cardinal sin of kicking into the man on the mark this whole play doesn't happen.

A pet hate of mine.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
