Quote

Four-time Melbourne leading goal kicker Russell Robertson has declared his former club needs to take a “ruthless” mentality into the 2018 season.

“In regards to the trades and Jack Watts and ‘Trenners’, you have to be a ruthless club if we want to compete in this ruthless competition,” he told SEN Afternoons.

“Yes we have to have our heart in the right place, Jack Watts is a great guy, but Watts had to do something that was right for his own career, and the Melbourne football club has to do what’s right for the Melbourne football club, and that’s be a ruthless club because we need to compete.”

I was expecting this to be from Mark Robinson. I even had my snarky post all lined up; I was gonna say: "There's only one Robbo I care about and his name ain't Mark."

We have been waiting a very very long time for that - don’t hold your breath

Robbo if only you could put your boots back on. Inspirational as you were. A legend.

Off topic but i'm kind of curious how a 187cm Robbo would fit into our forward line these days against the consensus attitude now of "tall marking kpf's and small pressure forwards/rotating mids and nothing in between" whereas back then i think it was to just stack the forward line with any players who have a natural goal kicking forward line ability that did not have to play against a zone D. Would people want us to pass on Robbo at the draft because he was too small a kpf and too tall a small forward? We've brought in Fritsch this year, how does he compare in aerial abilities? Is he hopefully going to be the new Robbo? :D

At 189 cm, I recon Mitch Hannan is a pretty close match for a Robbo type of forward.  Although he probably tends to work up the ground a bit more, I think he has a similar skill/attribute set to Robbo - good high mark, mercurial and good goal sense.

I have a generally pretty poor memory of past players.  And I often watch Robbo's highlights and look at his comparative stats and wonder why I don't hold him in higher regard. I assume it's because I'm not easily seduced.

There was a time when you recruited players because of their natural football ability, as opposed to their athletic traits.

I suspect a Robbo-type who didn't perform well in time trials and beep tests would be overlooked in the current climate, notwithstanding the fact that he was an elite goalkicker, a characteristic sadly lacking in our current list.

Forgot how good he was...

What great footage. Robbo could do special things - all it took was the initial teamwork.

He was back then, we picked him up as a rookie...

Sometimes you get lucky.

We do have short memories.. We forget that in 2005 he kicked 73 goals and 30 points. That is seriously elite numbers! He was absolutely robbed of an All Australian selection that year for none of then Brad Johnson..

Given his physical stature and the package of attributes, Robbo was one of those great Melbourne stars, and such a nice bloke.

A player who got the absolute best out of his abilities. Improved his kicking year on year going from below average to highly admirable over the journey of his career.

I suspect his post-playing semi clown-prince role at the club has done his on-field legacy no favours.

Personally, I think he injects a lot of enthusiasm, energy and personality into what can be a dreary lot of MFC talking heads.

And could not get a more loyal club man.

Despite his obvious disappointment he took his retirement as a player on the chin with great class.

He (Robbo) hosts a pub lunch before an Demons' MCG game in Richmond on behalf of the Club. It is a snack and beer thing, and is very pleasant, well-attended and free. I think it was and will be held in August. It is worth attending, if you can get there. The pub is across the road from the Richmond Town Hall. Free tickets from the Memberships side of the MFC.

I appreciate the information Dee.

Will try and get there. Spread Eagle or the Vine are the only Rubbidy Dubs that come to mind.

I agree with both of you, I wasn't having a dig at his current involvement at all, it's a wondrous thing.

I was just wondering if it's a clearer image in most of our eyes than his on-field endeavours.

he rang me about 4 years ago on behalf of the club (can’t remember exactly why) and i spoke to him for a good hour about how bad things were and what we could do to save the joint.

Directly opposite the Town Hall is the Sporting Globe (corner of Lyndhurst st) and as they are an mfc sponsor, I'm guessing that is where Robbo can be found.

I haven't been there so can't say what it is like but I would imagine Robbo would be quite entertaining.

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator attended training out at Casey Fields to bring you the following observations from Preseason Training. GATOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS There were 5 in the main rehab group, namely Gawn, Petracca, Fullarton, Woewodin and Lever.  Laurie was running laps by himself, as was Jefferson.  Chandler, as has been reported, had his arm in a sling.  Lindsay did a bit of lap running later on. Some of the ''rehab 5'' participated in non contact drills and b

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan.
