POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 16

Demonland

A lot of love for Jetta and understandably so, but I thought Frost also played well, I liked his smother of the attempted underground handball. Hunt and Hannan also very good. Vince frustrated at times but also did some good things. Pedo's one hander against Weitering.

Ultimately, we beat a side that is difficult to beat, at a ground we're losing at more than we're winning, with the pressure of knowing a loss would send us out of the 8, without 5 of our best 10 players. That, to me, is a huge positive, even if the quality of our performance was low.

This sums it up perfectly, titan.  I can put aside some of the errors, mistakes etc knowing that we got over a giant hurdle today.  Big, big win from the boys, and you can see that Goodwin knew it too.

Nice post for 10,000 as well, mate!

Just SUCH an important game for the club. I think we play 3 of the top in the next 4 weeks...and given we're missing so many of our guns that buffer may be key. Seems like this season theres just so little between so many.

Stretch is sh*tting himself at the sight of physical pressure and it's costing us. Far too fumbly and just cannot win a hard ball.

Agree about the hard ball - but he's an outside player, being asked to pick up the slack. For the rest, you're just guessing as to what his feelings and motivations are. I see his behaviour of someone who wants to make the right decisions not having enough time to do so, and ending up making no decisions and getting caught.

Stretch has played some really good outside games, hopefully in the longer term these experiences will help him develop a more rounded game. Even if some of that learning has to happen at Casey.

Really a much better win than it looked.  1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th from last years Bluey didn't play for us today against a team that has rolled GWS and Sydney and ran the Crows to 2 goals last week.  Carlton, as much as it pains me to say it, are actually not a bad side and within a couple of years will be a good side if they can keep Kreuzer fit.  Young Curnow will be a player.

Don't have time at the moment to see if everyone has been loving Neville Jetta or not but if I was female I would have his babies. Even if didn't touch the ball until those two contests in the final quarter he's still best on. Wow.

I'll check back tomorrow to sift through the Jetta love.

I still believe we're the inform team of the competition when you look at/compare who we've played.

Wow, that's just one-eyed wishful thinking. We're scraping home against Collingwood, Eagles and Blues, the Swans and St. Kilda are winning easily.

Tyson and Watts back in next week, we looked toothless around the packs. But still won! Cripps being off for a half was probably just enough.

A few there though on thin ice: Hannan, Stretch, Kent and Smith all fairly ineffective. It's all very well saying injuries give other players a chance to step up, but they need to (be able to) step up.

Agree. I know I will get shot down in demonland for this but I would add pedo to the list. Don't think he is in the game enough at the moment.

Those five to be replaced by Viney, jones, watts, Salem and Tyson pre September.

im comfortable with this.

How good was TMac.

Fantastic.

And so there can be no confusion about what i mean by couching a comment in sarcasm. Pro Dee, I (and another poster, sorry i can't recall who) said we could keep Frost if we got Lever because TMac was a 'natural forward' and could play the swing man role. You argued that this was not the case and categorically said TMac was not 'a natural forward'.

Played as a forward all his junior career. Leads to the right places. Beautiful and accurate kick for goal. Great forward pressure. Great mark. Kicks bags of goals. Twice in the last 3 weeks has been the reason we have won. Incredibly hard to match up on. Looks every inch a natural forward.

The evidence of the last few weeks suggests this is another assessment you have got wrong.

Not sure why people are saying it was a krap game. I thought it was bloody fantastic considering the outs we have.

Lucky Carlscum lost their rotations early

Max - Where did the AA ruckman go? Invisible around the ground.

Smith and Jesse. Great to see you both back, but those performances were an advertisement for a ressies game prior to return.

Jetta. Goodness me. What a frigging star of a defender. No plaudits from outsiders, but geez he can play. Saved the game for us late.

Melksham - yuck. What a shocker, save the late goal.

Wagner - How long is Salem out for again? Turnover king.

Oliver - Brownlow hands. Faster than I have ever seen.

T-Mac - Just wondering if he might be playing himself out of a backline spot for good.

Gutsy, hard fought win.

Exciting, and not the "winning ugly" that I was hoping for. I honestly thought it was a great game of footy.

Wagner???? You can't be serious? Two massive goals, and possibly his best game!!!

As for the leaders, Lewis made a couple of horrendous, embarrassing mistakes but he also wore immense physical pressure from them all day and took hit after hit. He put his body on the line when he needed to and he was obviously smart in that final play. Vince, on the other hand, I thought was putrid. If we had our best 22 available I don't know if I'd have Vince in the side.

Stretch is sh*tting himself at the sight of physical pressure and it's costing us. Far too fumbly and just cannot win a hard ball. Kent improved as the game went on, I'd certainly give him another game. I also thought Wagner was much improved on last week.

I think Vince should be dropped. The club has taken a hard nosed policy in the past with various players, Vince is a leader but is having a very poor year. He started well, but then he copped the toe injury. I'm not sure if it's a hangover effect from it but he's been making a lot of bad decisions which has nothing to do with his toe.

Stretch as well could benefit from the VFL time, he's been up and down this year playing some very good games but some very poor ones. This was certainly seems to fall into the latter.

Richmond before last night were supposedly an in form team.

Swans last 4 wins

Suns

Dees minus 5-6 first 18 players

Bombers

Tigers

Not much to write home about there.

Their next 4

Giants, Saints, Hawks and Cats will tell us more about how they're travelling.

Maxy had more hitouts than Cruizer (so we were lucky we won the Cruizer Cup )

Jetta : Build a statue !!

Wagner improved today . Contested well

Oliver : Did real good !!

Petracca : 15 Contested Possessions. Did a lot of grunt work

Plugger Mac ; says it all. We have had a strong marking key Fwd all along.

OMac and Frosty are starting to play with confidence

ANB ; best effort

We had : Jones,Viney, Tyson, (Hard nut Midfielders)  Watts, Salem (ball deliverers)  all out.

The strength of a side is the standard of its bottom 6 players. Considering our side contained some of our bottom 12 players, we held up extremely well.

That was the impression I got on the radio, they were mostly praising him. Sounded like he did a few important acts of courage.

Can't point the finger at anyone but the old guys who made a couple of errors.

Hannan was ok for his first game on the ball.

Kent went hard for the tackles ,mAde one or two errors but was ok.

Stretch went ok.

Getting Smith back is great- need him to find touch.

I thought Stretch was poor, hasn't done much since coming in to the side. Kent also, he just didn't use it well enough. Those two will probably be out when Watts/Salem return. Petracca pretty quiet too, but you can excuse that given his season to date.

Good win, one where you're just happy to bank the points. But the Blues were 2 players down before half time (incl Cripps) and we only just snuck it in. Handy 4 points in the overall scheme of things, we need to ride out the next month, hopefully pinch a game against the Roos and then come home with a wet sail with a full squad.

Further to this post, I just watched Goody's presser. He is was pretty unequivocal in his assessment as TMac as a forward and the likelihood of him continuing to play up forward. 5:12 and 6:12 of this video:

We've moved him there out of necessity, but he's really enjoying his footy and he's got some of the best hands at the club. I think we've pulled a new Neitz out of the bag (good defender turned forward).

He's looking very much at home there.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
