was what the bears did to nick riewoldt worse? but it wasn't in his debut

Targeting an injured player while he is trying to get off the ground is as bad as it gets

Yeah so was our young Jack.I just hope 4 and 2 others give him a simalare arrival ! Lets say Watts,Viney,Vince.

Cheers for one of the funnier things I've read in a long while. Jack Watts is going to go and intimidate the newbie!? Even his wildest apologists wouldn't make a case for this ever being a possibility. But my god, it would be entertaining to watch it unfold and see the response. I'll become a monarchist on the spot if it does. Long live the Queen!

He wasn't trying to get off the ground, he'd waved the trainers away and stayed on.

I was at QB on Wattsday. He was relentlessly double/triple teamed, punched held niggled, pushed off balance, on and off the ball. Everything you expect of a club fearful of a skilled first gamer.

The disappointing thing was the lack of support and reaction from his teammates who allowed him and themselves to be intimidated.

Would hope we have analysed their team and target the skilled in form players and match them with a determined opponent and concentrate on our best avenues to winning which is by using Watts who is often nvolved in our scoring passages not as an enforcer but as a creator. Let him m play the game he does best not reduce him to a reactionary hit man chasing imaginary targets.

Would like the banner to read  JUST MAKE SURE

to reinforce the  message that  this win will begin an improved position on the ladder and a new perception of MFC.

Reinforce the need to make sure you play the patterns and structures that have been given Make sure you play the ball with the skill you have . Make sure you create opportunities. Make sure you kick truly. Make sure you work hard with your teammates.

The win will come

GO DEES

There was a thread re Riewoldt v Brisbane/Scott Brothers many years ago.  A fun read if it could be found.  I think Riewoldt was captain at the time.

I remember a young skinny Buddy Franklin being targeted at the MCG.

The hype re Watts playing was so ridiculous I remember Harry O'Brien (sweet prince) saying he'll be able to tell his Grandkids he played against Watts in his first game, although he was obviously taking the ****.

I am puzzled why those Adams comments  gets supporters carnal juices flowing and think it will fire us up. Implies the players need something extra to give a 100%.  Are not 4pp's and possible jump to sixth place on the ladder enough motivation? I am sick of the so called need for all these external motivaton excuses, blah! Happens ever year on QB before we promptly fall off the perch for the remainder of the season.

It's not to say they need something extra but you can guarantee they will use it, even if they say they don't. Lets put it this way, it's not going to hurt.

They asked Bob Murphy the other day whether the coaches will use the comments at all...he didn't hesitate and said 'yes, of course they will'.

I used to train down in the gym at Glenferrie oval back when it was the Hawks home and training ground. In the week leading up to the Carlton game they had the Mark McLure Truth photo shoot, nude with strategically placed football hanging on the wall. Not sure if McLure sent it, had made some derogatory remarks about the Hawks or Jeans was just stirring things up but they used it.

This was when the Hawks were at their peak, they didn't let anything or any chance go by.

I'd be ok with giving one of our pp's to the Lions.

That incident when Watts was targeted by their players seems to have been greatly overrated and overhyped ever since to me, with all the "haha welcome to AFL football Jack" talk. At the time he wasn't actually crunched or hurt or anything, he just got up and took his free kick and played on.

Like so much about Jack Watts there is fact and there is fiction. Plenty of the latter.

Good call DP..   A win on Monday puts the team at 6th on the ladder for sure.

Then its possession is 9/10ths of the law and they have to come and get us.  An earlier post on the training thread from this mornong says GAWN may be back next week. (Joel Smith progressing too)

Good luck to the opposition with the chase if that occurs.

Just saw this on the MFC twitter.

"We want to play our best footy come Monday and the result will take care of itself," - @nathan2jones

Nobody could deny that the players read Demonland, and have finally got the message that we dont want to hear the cliche "we are preparing for their best" any more.

Now to back up the words.

Im pumped for a win on Monday.

Agreed, as Watts said, it's the most exaggerated non event of his career

I had a bit of a chat with him as my son and I were crossing the adjoining soccer field on our way back to the city. Lovely guy with a great sense of humour. Let his son take a shot with my camera.

Just got into LA. Checked the AFL app and saw Bombers smash Port and Brisbane destroy Freo. We are better than those three and Freo's form suggests Collingwood ain't that flash hot either. We should absolutely smashed them imo. We are top 4 quality imo.

Melbourne has to have the lowest average losing margin, surely?

Big opportunity for a break out game. If he plays ?

As usual I have no confidence in our ability too win this game, a place in the 8 beckons, teams below us have smashed teams this weekend too open the door for us.......we should win, but I have nfi if we will. Stating the obvious, it depends on wether we turn up to play, we usually don't when there's a big carrot dangling in front of us.........CAR'N THE DEES smash the birds.

Melbourne, there is just so much to play for this game. Please, back yourselves in and learn to win these crucial games. I'm sick and tired of dropping games like this where we have everything to play for and the moment just drowns us like a massive wave.

GET IT DONE DEES!!!!!!!!!!!

As for us intimidating Darcy Moore, it ain't going to happen.

While our backline isn't soft, there are no Dean Wallis/Rod Grinter types to put the fear of God into people in there.

I would say if we are going to get payback for the Watts incident then have Jack Viney sidle up to Callum Brown at some point.

Then again Collingwood are probably smart enough to keep him largely out of the line of fire in his debut.

Just digging through some old stuff whilst down in Melbourne and I came across some old signed footy cards including John Northey, Jim Stynes, Garry "dollars" Lyon, Greg "Sugar" Healy, Brett Lovett, O'Dwyer, Yeats, Obst, Spalding, Stetch, Viney, Dean, Jackson, Sean Wight, Hughes.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
