Has Salem warranted an immediate return after a silly and undisciplined act? Does his overall form in 2017 gain automatic entry in our best 22?

Youd be punishing the team to not include Salem .

Auto for mine, adds polish and his kicking skills are needed

everyone going on about Collingwoods injuries but again we have no ruckman and are missing:

Gawn - our MVP

Hogan - best Fwd

Brayshaw

AVB

Spencer

Pies have 5-6 first team players out so not too different really

Not even slightly trying to be patronising. Pretty certain FD's are sophisticated places and have multiple plans in place before the game...dependent on a multitude of contexts.

They do indeed. But this is a big call. If Spencer plays that is up to 4 positional changes for us With Watts fwd, TMac back, OMac out perhaps out, Pedo playing ruck/fwd and of course Spencer rucking.

Its a much bigger deal than say, ANB being dropped for BenKen.

Spencer seems an obvious choice but understand that Grundy is a very mobile ruckman and will run him hard, he may not have the fitness to go with Grundy and if not we are one down.

I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't come in.

I'm interested to see how Goody handles this one, there are arguments both ways and I don't see it as a certainty.

I trust we will get it right.

With no match practice I don't think Jake will play and if he did he would be a liability against Grundy.

I don't agree, Jake did a full pre-season and he injured his shoulder so he should have been running for quite a while, unlike Max, so he is likely to have retained his endurance.  What sort of "match practice" - at Casey?  Do you think Gawn is going to play at Casey to get :"match practice" before returning to MFC?  I don't - he'll be straight in and Jake could be too.  If Jake gets through a solid contested work-out at training then he'll be pushing hard to be in and IMO they should play him.  In: Jake out: OMac

One is an AA, probably the best ruck in the comp the other is a battler at best.

Not like for like 'Fifty'...but personally I wouldn't mind Max having a run at Casey on managed time before bringing him back in.

Having said that I agree with your take on Grundy, but even a fully fit Spencer would struggle with him.

I doubt the FD will bring in an underdone Spencer but I trust they will have a good plan.

Maybe you're right and he is the plan.

I'd say the wording will change to "he's been ready to go for a few weeks but we've held him back, so he's got the training load right to come straight back in!".

As much as they say all players at the start of the season start at zero again, we know some start at zero* (the axtrix being, if your name is Jones, Lewis, TMac, Viney, Hogan, Watts, Gawn, Jetta or Tracc you'll get in no matter the circumstances) - probably a few I've forgotten. Some like Watts and even Jetta will be excluded in the pre-season but come season proper the rules change - and so they should.

I'm not surprised that Spencer doesn't play.

I also doubt they will rush Max back in, it would be a desperation move after a serious injury that will need to be managed before he gets back to AFL level.

If Spencer pulls up ok this week and plays well enough, then he could come back in and it will give Max the time to get some miles in the legs at Casey...

Dermie (I think it was) said similar on League Teams last night. Hope Watts can be part of the introduction.

Source re Hogan is the Goodwin presser.  article on the MFC website

There is open training session on Sat at 9:30 at Goschs

Well the article on the website says this:

Goodwin said key forward Jesse Hogan was close to returning to the track.

“We said at the start that it was going to be four to eight weeks. He’s not that far away, but he’s now got to get some training into him and we’ll assess him week-by-week,” he said.

Close to returning to the track could mean the session on Saturday. Four to eight weeks away? - Monday is 4 weeks. He's not that far way? Speaks for itself. Monday is certainly not that far away. Get some training into him on Saturday and assess him. He's going to play! Hogan is going to play! Great foxing!

Well hes having a breakout season, is a great user of the footy and is averaging 22 touches.

He was great against Adelaide, quiet against the Kangas. To answer the question though -  yes hes an automatic in.

If Gawn only another week or two away I don't know if they will bring in Spencer to be a short term fill in.

The last 5 weeks that we have been ruckman free we have won the clearance count on each occasion

Vs G.C  37 clearances to 34

Vs Nth  40-34

Vs Adel 49-38

Vs Hawks 37-30

Vs Drug Lords 40-31

We have won 3/5 of those games along the way.

I'm not sure that having Jake V the Pies will help better those clearance counts whilst not having him will give us extra run around the ground.

Have to get it right every now and then

Well must confess I thought he'd be an ideal inclusion.

Collingwood are definitely the most injury depleted side we've played all year.

Hopefully adding him to the list of "Jack Viney made me cry".

Every year I just want Jack Watts to be BOG against this mob. Don't know it'll happen this year though, feels like his rucking efforts are taking its toll.

I'm a bit disappointed we haven't brought Spencer straight in, I feel like we'd get more from him as a recognised ruckman than say OMac. But I also trust they know what they're doing.

EDIT: just saw the team selection and they've got Spencer in the squad. Might've jumped the gun there!

The word I am getting is Hogan still a likely starter. He is fit, wants to play, but faces a mixed view from footy department on whether he is mentally ready and physically conditioned. It will come down to selection committee on Thursday. There may also be some gamesmanship going on here.

Thats what I am hearing. It's from the top. Its by no means absolute. Just what I am hearing.

Happy to be smashed on here for giving gossip on a "gossip site". Personally I find it entertaining. Knock yourself out!

Looking forward to some apologies.

At this stage I would have Harmes, Wagner, Bugg on the bench with one of either OMac or Spencer. let the rest play Saturday for Casey and select one during that game to rest up as emergency for Monday. After all, the Casey game would be instead of a training run with the rest of the team on Saturday morning.

Haha no I'm not, but what a great women she is producing a fine specimen like Ben.. I am taking the Mick a bit with Ben, but he was a huge presence and a serviceable player despite his dodgy disposal. Glenn Lovett was my favourite player as a kid for some reason, and Petracca of the current group.

Getting sick of people on other sites claiming Howe has been reinvented as a backman by the pies when he'd spent a fair chunk of time down back with us. They forget (or don't realise) that part of the reason he wanted to move was because Bucks had promised him he wouldn't play him down back!

So speaking of tools, can someone ask Jeremy "Howe's the move to the pies for more time in the forward line going?"

Jeremy said at the time that he was happy to be at the Pies because he had been assured by Buckley that there was a " defined role"in the forward line for him. And he's excelled in that defined role hasn't he ? Good on him !!!

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
