Jack Niall reported our interest a few days ago.

Caroline Wilson reported that Zak is earning under the AFL 'median' pay which is the range of $230k to $250k.  Yes, I was shocked at how low it is but she is rarely wrong with her info

Sydney lost Tom Mitchell because their offer was around $350k.  They will need to do a lot better than that to keep Zak.  One thing in their favour is that the new CBA tips $2m into their salary cap next year and the Buddy contract does not have escalation clauses - his contracted annual amounts are fixed.

But if Zak wants to come to Melbourne we can beat any $ Sydney offer without breaching the faith with our players or abandoning the club's mantra of not paying 'overs'.

Zak really fits our 'run and carry' game style and is as tough as so would be rapt to see him in our colours.

Mitchell was offered a lot more than 350

Do you know that as a fact.  The media report I saw around trade time said the Sydney offer was around $350k - they couldn't afford anymore because of salary cap pressure.

If a fact I will go back and amend my post.

I don't think he is worth anything near first round pick......but as with most players, if the price is right and he fits our needs then certainly worthy of a sniff.   Would be negligent not to asses fully.

Zak Jones seemed to be a really good player on another team, but not one I had any interest in apart from being related to Nathan. But this year he has produced some real dash, and his kicking is on a quick improvement path. Considering we keep rotating ANB, Harmes, Kent, Stretch, etc.... in and out on form, I reckon he is ahead of this lot so could be in our starting 22.

What do you think he is worth? Was pick 15 and playing pretty well now, latest reports saying he is staying at swans so probably won't matter too much, I would say if he is anything like his brother I would suggest he would be pretty loyal and stay at Sydney

I think Zak's value is being overrated on here because he's Nathan's brother. He shows glimpses with some run and dash, I don't think he's worth anymore than the pick he was drafted at.

That passage with 4 mins to go in 2nd qtr just then is Z Jones. Looks great streaming away with the ball, gets over excited can't steady and misses an easy goal with no pressure.

He had to nail that goal.  I too think he lacks a little bit of class.

But he's a solid player.

Not sure he'd make much of a difference to our team.

Good point about Nathan's age @Wiseblood  If Zac doesn't come at the end of this year he may not get another chance to play with his Brother.

Just a very ordinary player.

Really? Your definition of ordinary is ordinary. Equal best ranked player for the Swans at the moment. Goes hard, great tackler and a line breaker.

As we know a lot of deals are "over the line" well before the end of season, 'a la" Hawks recent recruits. That said i think Mitchell was let go for same reason as  below and i also think that Jones is a late bloomer like his bro, and better for us than any of Port's current bigheads like Ollie....

He had a great third term, kicked a goal and set up another.  18 touches and 7 tackles to this point.  What he seems to have improved is in his ball winning ability without having to sacrifice his ability to impact a contest.  He is both an inside and outside player.

I wonder if he is about the same value as Watts would be?

And that's the crux of the issue - does he really want to move, or can Sydney do enough to keep him?  With the extra $$$ in their salary cap you could argue that they will be able to table a pretty good offer, but if we can match it and he wants to play for a few years with his brother then we are in the box seat.

Sorry for the lazy link post as well, felt like I was letting the team down as you go to great lengths to pull quotes out and all I did was dump it here.  Wasn't much to the article though!

No problem Wise.  At least you gave us a summary of the article.  I only find it frustrating when someone posts a link and gives no idea as to what it is about.

I don't care who his brother is.

He is one of the more impressive young players getting around at the moment.

Absolutely worth a first round pick and very healthy renumeration.

Would be one of the first picked in any team.

I tend to agree.

He did quite a few mature things in last nights game - one in particular was when he set up a crucial goal in the last qtr with a great well-timed handball in heavy traffic.

We've got fringe players in the way of Harmes, ANB, JKH, Bugg, Hannan, Wagner, Melksham and a couple of others rotating through the 22 at the moment. I understand this is how depth works and pressure on the 22 is kept up but I'd rather a player like Zak Jones in the team full time because he's got all of the tricks the aforementioned group have all bundled up in one.

I played a few games with Zak in the under 18s at Mount Eliza (I was a year older but he was playing up a grade or two)

And his attack on the ball at that age was ferocious... to the point where me 6 foot 2 and 100 kgs didn't want to get in his path and I was on the same team!

Made of the right stuff and would slot straight in. Would deffiantly be worth our first round this year... approx pick 10... which ironically is what Nathan was drafted at wasn't it?

We are the third or fourth worst ball-movement side in the AFL.

Jones has many admirable attributes but ball use at this stage isn't one.

There's no way in the world the club would give a first rounder for him. That's a Richmond-like move.

I'm far more interested in players who will boost our ball use through the midfield. Run and carry is all well and good if it ends up in a scoring opportunity. I mean, Hunt's ability to break lines is great but he still butchers it or struggles to finish his work when he fails to kick to the advantage of our forwards. He is inconsistent with his finishing. And Jones is in that category.

We need a serious injection of skill and class through our midfield imo and there are others we should be targeting for that reason.

Did you just describe Zac Jones or Jayden Hunt?

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
