I'm wondering how many people who commented in this thread actually read the article. He went to Perth with the club's blessings for family reasons. I imagine, as was posted last year, it has something to do with the very poor health of a family member. I also know that smoking is often tied in with stressful situations, so it's no surprise to hear that he was smoking. And before anyone says that if it was a serious family situation what the hell is he doing going to a music festival, having been in such a situation (as I'm sure many of you have as well), it's important to get out occasionally to clear the head.

The club has said they don't condone his smoking, but they are putting their full support behind him in what is a very difficult time for him. I'm completely anti smoking, but I think he should be cut some slack given the circumstances.

What family issue

You are an absolute ????? it's well documented. His father isn't well and hasn't been for some time now.

Taking into consideration Hogan's circumstance (family), it is hard not to cut him some slack. Smoking at a festival is probably not very high on Hogan's 'give a damn' list at the moment - which is understandable. We do have sponsors to consider, and it isn't a great look on the club, but I am pretty sure that most will understand it isn't an ideal situation Hogan finds himself in (with his old man ill). I cut him some slack anyway. He did come back to pre-season in great nick. Recent incidents (on field and now off) aren't ideal though.

Not a great look I admit, but we also don't know the circumstances of what's going through Jesse's head right now.

For all we know he's absolutely filthy at himself for the suspension, and coupling that guilt with the condition of father at the same time might be really stressing him out?

You are kidding me! Does a really stupid thing ( suspended) then goes out and wastes away at a festival having a smoke???

If I were Goodwin I would give him another week on top of his supension to really wake him up!  His father is sick?? So waste away?? Christ ,My old man died in really tragic circumstances but I never whinged or made excuses, which comprimised myself, family or sporting teams at the time!!

Looks and is very poor!

It's extremely unfair of you to apply your circumstances and how you dealt with it, as everybody handles these things differently.  There is no benchmark for dealing with tragedy.

The club has played it very well.

"Over the past few months, Jesse has been dealing with the deterioration of his father's health and the club took the opportunity, with him being suspended, to give him three days away from the club over the weekend," Mahoney said.

"He decided to use this opportunity to return to Perth to get some time away.

"Whilst we don't condone Jesse's actions captured in the vision, the club will continue to support Jesse through this very difficult time."

This is a subtle way of telling the media to back off and give him space. I'm sure it's genuine. But it puts out the fire. Doubtful we'll hear any more about this. Who in the media would dare criticise a young kid for having a dart while his dad's deathly ill?

I am probably more concerned he wasn't watching the game, and that is obviously pretty minor.

I gave up caring about little insignificant indiscretions and the poor behaviour of footballers, if you could even call it that, a long time ago.

Unfortunately I wouldn't put anything past the media these days….

Not a good look, but it's hardly a big deal.  I'd rather him puff on a ciggie than be popping pills instead.

How do we know he wasn't? As I posted in the Lewis/Hogan thread, the club should have flown someone over to drug test him.

Not good enough. Hopefully he will turn these bad habits around when he matures, like Gawn did.

As for being at a music festival, unlike others that alone doesn't worry me. The club granted him leave and he wanted to catch up with friends. When I was his age I went to plenty of music festivals without drinking or smoking. His actions while there are the problem.

We're as guilty as any other club as being softer on our stars than fringers. I wonder what the reaction would be if it was Pedo?

In all honesty, footballers don't have to do much to stay out of trouble... don't take drugs and do any other stupid sh!t behind closed doors. It is amazing how dumb some of these kids are.

The act itself is nothing too serious but his stupidity to do it in public while serving suspension is mind-boggling.

I don't think the footage would even exist if it was Pedo.

Club says he's got serious health problems in family. Everybody else, back off and leave him alone. One [censored], for god's sake. We should support our players, not lambast them. (Re going to Festival, good on him - most of us have dealt with loved ones in critical health situations at some time in our lives - we cope with it in different ways, and you need some time out)

The health issues might have even contributed to his actions last week.

Let's just support him - he's one of us.

If he only remembered to wear his sunglasses he would have gotten away with it. Besides he should know better. That Perth sun is harmful to the eyes.

I'm hoping the leadership group doesn't ban him as it will hurt the club as a whole.

I hope they throw the maximum fine at him and take away his privileges to visit home as frequently as he does.

In addition, I hope they're a little create. I'd like to see them make him run an additional training session once a week until seasons end that is optional for the other players to attend. It's then up to him. He can sulk and see it as a punishment, or take it on board, use initiative, try and convince his teammates to attend, and learn to become a leader/ role model for the younger players. If he does the later he may earn back his privileges.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
