I think there's a very good chance he will come in...we need some coverage forward when Watts has a run on the ball.

I can't see us only going in with Weideman & Watts as the tall forwards/ruck relief.

The other options are Pedders and Frost and both seem underdone or off the pace. Spencer is another but I can't see us going with 2 1st rucks.

Agree to disagree, mate.

No need to discuss it further. Scott on the AFL site says:

"With Bernie Vince likely to replace Lewis, Scott said Demons ruckman Jake Spencer would likely fill the forward-line hole left by Hogan."

will be a fascinating game. I expect a much better performance than last week, in fact I think we will play better against the better teams

I predict we will lose by 9 points with the line "we would have won this with Lewis and Hogan" being uttered many times

Scott is dreaming of us having two ruckman so his guys can stay down and collect the hitouts.

I can't see anyway Spencer will come in, especially as the team vs St Kilda @ Etihad was deliberately chosen to go with a short forward line.  Why would Goodwin & co change that strategy just a fortnight later.  Pedersen far more likely.

I'm not sure where else to bring this up, but does anyone else get a little frustrated that Billy Stretch doesn't take the game on a bit more.  Several times in the last few games, he has had ball in hand and what appears to be open space towards goal ahead of him, and instead of making some ground and using his foot skills to deliver the ball forward, he back tracks and handballs off, coincidentally to much more senior players.

Does he lack the pace?  Confidence?  Should the senior players be encouraging him to take it on himself instead of calling for a cheap possession?

No thoughts of dropping him or anything like that, but I can't help but feel he could be me offensively minded and therefore much more damaging.

I noticed at one time in the Saints game Jones grew a little impatient with Stretch for not pushing forward and just ripped the ball straight out of his hands. Stretch will be a very good player once he gets some greater confidence.

For me it is a sign of the times and a reflection on the development of our list over the last few seasons that I can accept the suspension of our key forward and a senior more than capable mid fielder and still believe we can win this game against Geelong.

There are very good replacements ready and willing and a coaching team to work through the best way to play it on Saturday.

We will give it a good run this week.

Those mentioning ANB out have obviously forgotten his first game and did not take note of who may have kept Simpson to 14 touches on the weekend.

No way he will be dropped. Hoping to see Smith in with Bernie and possibly Kent for Angus if he is not right.

I actually thought ANB was better round 2 than round 1. When none of our half forwards could lay a tackle, he had 4 on the board. He finished with 5 (equal with Harmes, who came from nowhere in the last quarter). ANB laid the third most tackles on the ground. No way he goes out. Do people actually watch the game?

Harmes?, you've got to be joking. When the game was on the line, he was probably our best player in the last quarter. ANB's workrate and forward pressure over both games will be rewarded, and he shouldn't get dropped. Frost is underdone, and won't be considered. If you want Kent and Smith in the team, Melksham should be the one to make way.

It's a shame AF, but often people only look at their disposal count.  If it's low then it must mean they've had a bad game and exerted no influence on the contest itself.  It's rubbish.  He may have been quieter than last week but, as you say, he impacted the game in other ways than just kicks and handpasses.  I'd be shocked if he were to be dropped.

Was thinking earlier, how amazing the depth of the MFC list is now.  I mean we all knew we had a lot more depth than previous seasons, but we may have one of the top few deepest lists in the whole comp.

Lewis and Hogan go out,  we have two guns in Vince and Kent available to come back in.

Then we have five very capable and versatile players in Frost, Hibberd, Wagner, Pedersen and Vandenberg all waiting in the wings. plus an injured Joel Smith who will be a very good player. Not to mention JKH and Bugg who can contribute if called up.

Feels pretty good, and holds us in stead for the grind of a long season.

I don't know if I would say I'm confident after losing two of our most important players but I do feel least confident that this group of players can give anyone a run, whoever we decide to bring in. I feel like the squad is developing those tangible's that come from becoming a determined group of players.

Vince (who should come in for Lewis) is a senior player and could strangely be better for the week of with a bit of a point to prove.

Whichever way we decide to go with replacing Hogan, whether it's going like for like with Pederson, giving Spencer a crack as a fwd/2nd ruck, or going short with perhaps bringing Kent in, they will be determined to play their role and be in the team the following week.

I'm also hoping the players have a point to prove after embarrassing themselves and giving Roos a disgraceful send off at the end of the season last year.

Looks like Tim Smith to debut this week

I like the idea od smith coming in for hogan. Almost, but not quite, like for like. I expect he will bust a gut in his debut game and if hogan was carrying a nigglw, fresh and fit, might even be a better option. He might wven be able to kick goals from dead in front 30 out.

According to the Casey pre-season thread, Tim Smith could barely run out the last quarter of last weeks game and couldn't provide any defensive running/pressure.

If that's true, he ain't playing AFL on Saturday.

Oliver looks buggered after he runs through the banner, doesnt stop him having an influence. If they think Smith can have an influence on the game then they will play him.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
