Thanks for all the info. You'll find though, anyone that comes on here is well and truly up to date on all of the above. I reckon most of us have watched the game a few times. I've had it on 6 times. I saw Watts play. I think he was in the worst 6 in the squad on the day, and had Spencer played I don't think he would have. I'm not a massive Watts fan, but I'm not a hater either, I just like to go on matchups. Kreuzer for example looked like a new man on the weekend, and with Maxie's wrist and back, it's possible Spencer comes in. It might be Spencer in for Smith and Tyson for Bernie... Not like for like, but horses for courses. But if they decide they need Tyson and Bugg in to move the ball, then I for one won't be too worried if Jack takes a seat for Spence.

All I'm saying is, Watts out is something I'm increasingly ok with. Especially in light of what were, frankly, some selection surprises last week that all paid off (ANB and Hannan as defensive forwards). In Goody I trust.

You suggested that he might be the one to miss out, I gave my opinion why he shouldn't, I wasn't aware that you'd watched the game 6 times and what other posters had done was irrelevant, we agree to disagree. I think that Jack is doing what the Coach wants and that he will probably play most games this year. Jack will play better games than that but I doubt that Spence will.

I tend to agree RN. There is not much need to tackle when you are the one with the ball.

To think that you'd compromise on selection this week for any reason is absurd. Do you realise that Geelong also have a 6 day break?

I think the off season "Party" (Cough ?) is well and truly over for our Mr Watts. Hopefully back on Trac now.

Would be better for the run and will be surprised if dropped.

Well there is.

The AFL gave the MFC a one off payment of $1.4 to help restructure the football department.  They didn't "pay Roos salary for 3 years".

I don't know the full details but I believe the we (with the AFL's assistance) successfully argued to the MCC that given the high number of MCC members who were MFC fans they were potentially hurting revenue for the club and so provided us with compensation.I believe it was a one off payment.

As for the other payments from the AFL, I think that was largely to dig us out of the hole we'd put ourselves in. I also think they played a huge part in helping to recruit both PJ and Roos, basically providing assurances that they would keep a watchful eye on us if needed. But once they took over it really doesn't seem like it's been needed.

If Kent does come in I did say I wouldn't be against moving Lewis down back, freeing up a position in the midfield for one of our forwards. Kent could then take his place in the forward line. Not sure how fit either Kent or Tyson are. But if it rains I would play Tyson, if not, I wouldn't. He might of came 4th in the B&F, but so would have Lewis, and on form - so would Oliver. These are the players Tyson is competing with for that midfield spot. And there are match fit. If Tyson does get a game I am not sure at who's expense (maybe same thing, move Lewis down back).

I believe the MCC gives the MFC a certain amount each year to cover the cost of MCC members attending Melbourne games.

And of course as the football club is a sporting section of the cricket club they help the football club in various little ways.

I think Tyson is a given - and an important in.

I'm also warming to Spencer coming in so we have a resting ruck in the forward line. Apart from potential forward assistance, this would mean Carlton need an extra tall to cover our taller forward line. It therefore reduces chance they'll stack their forward line with extra talls (putting pressure on the McDonalds and our smaller backs)

I'd expect he'd say that Geelong also may plan their selections partly around more than just the immediate game.  
The key word is partly.  Probably affects only a selection or two at most. 

A 'compromise on selection' isn't taboo in itself - eg. ensuring young players are rested, or played over older guys to give them experience; both may risk weakening the team in the coming match.

I agree with that, which I stated, but you don't factor that in 2-3 weeks into the season. We only had 2 first year players last week, and both were mature aged. Smith is out, and I can't see us resting Hannan. And I'd like to think that we've gone past the stage of gifting games to young players. 

I can't for the life of me see anyone being rested at this time of year.

No. I think the Tiges have a reasonable balance now. In the past they have lacked inside mids. They now have them. Although Prestia and Caddy are hardly setting the league alight, Dustin Martin was still able to predominately play forward and Tiges managed to etch out a win. In the past if Martin wasn't in that midfield, then they probably wouldn't get it forward as much. No doubt Nankervis helps. Early days yet though. But I will no longer pencil Richmond in as a W to us. We have matched up against them well in the past, but credit to Richmond, they have rectified some weaknesses in their side.
