AFL Round 1 - Non MFC Games (2017)

I can't see Hawthorn coming back from here.

I love it, and I hate it.

A few things about the "new' Hawthorn - Vickery still sucks, O'Meara and Roughead are rustier than most of the Essendon returnees, they're sorely missing Mitchell, Lewis and Hodge for the cool heads and experience at the stoppages, Sicily is no good as a defender, Burgoyne looks slow...all of which is enjoyable to watch.

I wonder how much of this Essendon performance is emotion for their first game back (similarly to their first game in Melbourne last year...cough).

I finally just start to decide I'd definitely prefer Essendon to win because watching Hawthorn get done is just so enjoyable, but then the commentators start again with the "oh poor Essendon" shieet and it makes me want to chuck.

I'd forgotten how good a player Dyson Heppell was though.

I can't stand the "poor old Essendon" narrative.

I hate the way they got to pick their own Round 1 Saturday night home game opponent.

But I love watching a thoroughly average Hawthorn walk off the MCG, embarrassed.

Same.  Having Jordan Lewis contribute to a carve-up for us is just icing on the cake - they could definitely have used him today.  A lot of the narrative from Hawthorn supporters gave an attitude of nonchalance about the whole thing, but I thought at the time they should have been filthy about the way he and Mitchell were moved on - I sure would have been.  I think they will be soon enough.

I'm actually really happy for the bombers players and fans. Wtf is wrong with me?

Nah I'm just happy the Hawks fans are unhappy. Them and the Cats fans need a good few years out of the 8 to remember they have no rightful place in the finals.

Bombers fans are going to be painful, you'll quickly get through this troubling period in your life.

I saw a tweet earlier from the ABC's coverage of the game. Someone said Hawthorn didn't have the same aura or arrogance, to which Mark Maclure (I think) responded "one went to West Coast, one went to Melbourne".

Hodge will help bring some of that back, but the new look Hawthorn really did look just average without them out there.

Sydney losing to Port, at home, in a year in which Port did not take many punters' fancy, is positive too.

Getting Hawthorn, Sydney and Geelong out of the finals is a huge step in the right direction for the AFL's competitiveness.

Don't like the Bombers winning.

Every win they get allows them to add to their and their supporters' victim mentality and self righteous belief that they were right all along.

While I think that the treatment that they got in the end was commensurate to their sins in terms of punitive measures, they should NEVER be allowed to forget the dark stain they put on the AFL.

Hawks supporters may be smug and arrogant but nothing like that of Ess supporters.  Can't stand either club or supporters but at least the Hawks earnt their smugness from 4 premierships.  efc get theirs from some misguided sense of entitlement.

Have absolutely loathed efc since the 2000 GF.  Their recent years have only added to that.

Forever and a day I will barrack against efc - even vs Collingwood.

Sorry but essendon winning just ruined the round. Can't stand how there fans blamed the AFL for everything and Turd is just awesome and did nothing wrong. If it wasn't the golden boy in charge and someone else did what they did hatred would be high. Hearing about this great comeback story makes me mad. Roughead is a great comeback story with what he went through.

I like how Port beat the swans and nice for Fagan to get his first win. But gee not a good start for Gold Coast

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    TURNAROUND by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons won their first game at home this year in the traditional King’s Birthday Weekend clash with Collingwood VFL on Sunday in a dramatic turnaround on recent form that breathed new life into the beleaguered club’s season. The Demons led from the start to record a 52-point victory. It was their highest score and biggest winning margin by far for the 2024 season. Under cloudy but calm conditions for Casey Fields, the home side, wearing the old Springvale guernsey as a mark of res

It's Game Day and the Demons are once again faced with a classic 8 point game against a traditional rival on King's Birthday at the MCG. A famous victory will see them reclaim a place in the Top 8 whereas a loss will be another blow for their finals credentials.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
