The is not a thread about Jack Watts. He can be discussed ad nauseum here:

We needed a new poll on the homepage so this thread is purely to state your opinion on whether he should be picked for Round 1.

So basically we are to discuss whether Jack Watts should play in Round 1 without discussing Jack Watts...

We already have x^2 threads on JW, and a round 1 team thread (or maybe several)....so we need this?

In England they have a thing about hearing "the first cuckoo" to show that spring's nearly here.

On Demonland at about the same time of year we have a thing about hearing "the first Jack Watts poll" to show the footy season's nearly here.

Thus the connection between "Jack Watts poll" and "cuckoo".

And he should, but he won't.

I think John Watters should play in Round 1.

There, I used a pseudonym so I didn't talk about him while still talking about him at the same time.  That makes no sense but it's the best I can do going by the parameters of the above.

Goodwin is going to cop it big time from us and the media if the following events happen:

  • We lose to St Kilda
  • Our forward line is dysfunctional
  • Watts is running around in some meaningless minor league scratch match
  • Weideman gets 3 possessions and 0 marks
  • Vandenberg has a disposal efficiency that matches his jumper number

I fear the last 2 may occur if things go south and Watts misses the match.

He's in our best 22 so he plays. If he's down at Casey and I see plodders like Vandenberg running round against St Kilda then I'll be annoyed, especially if we lose. I don't care if he has a supposed attitude problem, if he plays and plays well then it's irrelevant.

He should play JLT 3 v WC and if he lays 3 forward line tackles and 10 pressure acts he plays round 1.

If he doesn't do the team things with increased intensity then I'm happy to go in against the Saints with lesser players who will give their all. It's a long season and we have to get Watts sorted out at the start of the year otherwise he may as well have played the last two weeks.

Feels like we're giving the Saints a gift by voluntarily not playing a 38 goal a year forward who has exquisite skills.

Maybe they can return the favour by resting Bruce or Membrey to make it even.

Do you hold every other player to the same standard? How many tackles and pressure acts have you counted from Hogan so far?

If Watts is part of our best side in round 1 then he plays - and surely nobody is arguing that he isn't.

Gee VDB gets a bad rap round these parts. I re-watched the Carlton game the other day and he did some very handy things.

He is a pretty good midfielder. Unfortunatly with the depth of our midfield he doesnt quite get in there. They keep playing him forward but he is not anywhere near as good as a forward. ANB is in the same boat. They are great for midfield depth but I hate when the club play them out of position just to reward them. I'd rather see them play T Smith in the medium forward role than VDB

Personally I’d like to see him actually play a practice match this year before deciding whether he’ll play round 1. That’s sort of why they play practice matches I thought.

I think he should play in the JLT 3 game and if he does it would be great to see him perform strongly.

It would both vindicate Goodwins actions and silence Watts' critics.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
