Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

It's great that Oscar has started playing well, thanks to all the advice from Demonland to how hw should go about it.  A bit like Jack Watts really.

Potting Oscar after 2 or 3 games was just ridiculous. Reserve judgment for a couple of seasons (and preseasons).

I love Jacky, but it has to said that he really only came good this year (his eighth season).

Very smarmy unneccesary comment 55

Watts took 8 years to become a reliable performer. I hope for all our sakes that he is nothing like Jack Watts because we wouldn't want to wait 8 years before he becomes a reliable defender.

The point is that unlike most players on the list who have had to show their wares at Casey Oscar virtually came straight into the team.

In his last couple of games he has probably played to the level that Dunn has shown although Oscar has arguably cost us a couple of games in the process.

Why they rushed him & also persisted with Frost up forward still has me scratching my head.

He's had fantastic month or so. Did an absolutely cracking job last night with his older brother. I'll admit that I was in the majority who wanted him out of the team so he could build on his craft in the VFL. He's coming along beautifully at the moment.

Very important development year for Oscar.

I doubt Oscar would have developed so much if he played most of the year at Casey.

With Frost, I believe the club had little choice - we had no available forwards.  Also, it probably helped Frost's game as defender by playing as a forward.  Not the first time it has happened for a defender to learn forward running patterns, body positioning etc.  Again, Frost may not be as good as he now is without the forward experience.

Its no longer realistic to single out defenders one way or the other as it is now a defensive unit not 6 individual players and synergy happens where the result is greater than sum of its parts. The back 6 had to grow and develop together and that has happened.

We will never know but I believe it is most unlikely we would have got to this point if Oscar and Frost didn't have the experiences of this season.

Serious question...... With Frost and OMAC improving quickly and Tommy boy re-signing- Are we all fairly comfortable to leave Hurley alone? How does everyone feel about these 3 being core defenders for the next 5 plus years?

I am. Don't think we need or want him, considering the probable cost.
If Essendon are keen to send to us for Terlich, then I wouldn't turn him away, but our trade currency needs to be used to target an upgrade to our backup ruck stocks, and some serious pace to add to what Hunt brings.

Hibbert would meet our needs better ATM, some run and very good disposal out of HB. With Milkshake and Salem coming in next year, we are going to have terrific competition for spots in our back six. A fit Salem and Hunt may move into the midfield.

Tough to pick 6 from TMac, OMac, Frost, Jetta, Hunt, Milkshake, Wagner, Salem and maybe Hibbert. Depth is Lumumba, Garland and Harmes. Gone are Dunn, Terls and Grimes.

Its all a question of balance.  Balancing the numbers against the needs.

Despite his improvement in the past couple of weeks, I still think O Mac is a long way short of being a reliable KPB, if we see ourselves as being a team capable of winning a final next year. He's still very raw.

The mistakes that he makes are different to those of Frost and T Mac. They get undone when they try to take the game on, and as we've seen recently, that's not necessarily a bad thing. O. Mac on the other hand, misreads the flight of the ball, gets pushed off contests, and has bad disposal under pressure.

Hurley and Hibberd would make a huge difference to our backline.

and that's roughly what i quoted, john. never said you were totally wrong initially, just that you were close. initial comment was a little simplistic that's all :)

I recently attended a series of lectures to mark the 100 year anniversary of Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity. The new hot subject is Dark Matter. We should try to work that into a comment in this thread.

Er let me think, Oscar spent a season at Casey last season developing and got a game towards the end to see how he handled it, this year apart from the game against Collingwood where he got knocked cold in a marking contest, he had shown consistency at Casey

I agree that he doesn't have the strength, but given we could play finals next year, he will be a lot stronger and better prepared by then. I am not too sure whether we need 3 key position talls each week either.

Assuming we don't get Hurley and don't recruit another Key Back, then I think they will retain Dunn and Pedersen, who can fill in there if needed.

Really, so with another pre season under his belt he is not going to improve in those things, I am more concerned about us chasing a player/s who have had a year out of footy and as we all know, the game changes all the time, isn't that right Ross? With Melksham I am sure he will need to prove himself again at Casey before getting a sniff

I reckon the list is very balanced and strong enough to make a bit of a gamble.

i'd like to see them have a crack at O'Meara.  We still lack outside polish. If he can get his knee right he would be the perfect addition.

I remember when the Hawks picked up Burgoyne everyone worried that his knee was wrecked.  Look how that worked out.

I admit I was very quick to knock Oscar, but his improvement has been dramatic. He is still timid and needs to build strength, but if he plays 20 plus game next year, I suspect he will be unrecognizable on current form.

its great that these 3 have come on but we still desperately need some more experience and leadership down back.  Dunn and Garland not being considered anymore. If we get an injury or two to the Macs or Frost we are in trouble.

Hurley can also play key fwd when needed which could be handy

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
