Oliver for Brayshaw. Brayshaw has struggled at times this year though has still showed his ball handling class and composure on occasion. Perhaps a casualty of the more open and fast flowing style of play in the AFL this season given he is more footballer than athlete. I'd give him a few games at Casey to get his confidence and touch back and then bring him back in

Harmes and Hunt stay in. We will need their speed and dash at Etihad and at every ground. And pleasingly both have some nice footy skills too. Both can take a mark and can extricate themselves from a contest. Harmes in particular usually delivers a nice well weighted kick inside 50.

I've been really surprised at how good his delivery inside 50 is. He did one last week to Hogan that barely got 2 metres off the ground about 35-40m and then another last night. Really impressive player and I think he is currently keeping Petracca out which is great for us as a team.

It would be a shame to loose wagner from defense his attack on the ball and delivery into attack has been pretty important. I like the brayshaw and frost but they both seem the most likely to be rested for oliver and petracca. I would take petracca for his bigger body over anb.

For the first time in god knows how long we now have a list of talented players in the wings having to try damn hard to force their way back into the side,

I think Frost will be kept there until Dawes breaks back into the side. Dawes is also looking good at training. Hogan needs games...he is still learning what you don't do. I don't mind him getting mid possessions and stuffing up ....give it time. Same with Brayshaw only you can't be that quiet and keep getting selected. The only change I would like to see is Petracca in and if Salem is out ..... maybe add Oliver.

I think Petracca and Oliver will both come in and we may use the resting reason again. It is also a 6 day break and fresh legs will help.

Brayshaw looked out of sorts, but does some nice things. He seems to be in the second year blues a bit. Will be a great player for us though. I am not suggesting he goes out, but he might need a week off after a short break.  I could see Bugg, Kennedy or Harmes being rested.

To be honest, this week I haven't got a clue.

?Out - some very unlucky player(s)

?In - one or two of a lengthening list of those who deserve a game Oliver, ANB, CP5, even Trengove.

We are blessed with depth (other than ruck), at this stage, such as I cannot ever remember.

Much as I just love Angus he looks verging on NQR. Still underdone +/- concussion??

Frost I feel will be the one to make way for Petracca, I feel we're a bit too heavy with him and Pedo, and Pedo was definitely the better of the two last night.

Frost for Petracca

Oliver to come through the VFL. If Salem goes out I would honestly be tempted to play Trenners.

The only changes to the side should be specific match ups to the Aints if there are any...

interesting that many people thought Hogan played a bad one.

I thought he was great all over the ground. Sure he missed 2 he should have kicked. But i think even he now will agree with The Ox and work on that kicking action.

But he also knows how to defend.

A great weapon.

Why drop Harmes? Worked as a team member all night. I saw him fly across the TV Screen into a pack quite a few times

I'd keep Brayshaw ... he'll run into form sooner rather than later - but they might rest him along with possibly one other.  Or there might be a player out with some sort of injury that we don't know about.

So, maybe Petracca and Oliver in with 2 players missing because of injury, 'general soreness' or 'rested' (?) Who those 2 might be won't necessarily be form related ... all our players are contributing in some way.

The "rested" reason is going to happen more and more and it's legit ... Eade speculated that with the new rules in place, any given player will need a spell after 6 weeks or so.  Of course, that sort of thing needs to be staggered but like anything else, it will almost certainly become an accepted part of the sport.

The club came straight out with the "rested" bit with Oliver last week so we could expect more of the same.

I think we have to trust our coaching staff who will know exactly who is sore, which workloads need to be monitored etc.

The best thing is that the names that are being touted as coming in aren't just the same old names trying to fill holes. We are genuinely looking at improving our team with exciting youngsters. I honestly can't see some of our big names in the seconds getting close to a game at present. And I think that the most pressure on his spot in the senior team is Neville Jetta, who still isn't strong enough in the contest and loses his feet too much,

Neville JettA rarely gets done in a one on one.

He finds a target nearly every time.

He plays big-and is reliable.

Also can negate the second and third best small forwards in the league (Betts and Wingard).

He is another young stalwart and a leader.

His position is highly unlikely to be up for consideration.

I noticed a difference in his action last night. He seems to do better when he concentrates on the crazy footwork - perhaps it blocks out other thoughts? I think he should just kick them the way he always has and forget about the outside noise.

I really like what Frost brings, especially the things that aren't noticed, like sprinting 70 metres to be someone on the mark and stop a quick play on etc... His defensive acts shouldn't be underestimated.

But I want to see Petracca. He'll nail the goals Frost always misses, so we'll be bringing in more firepower and losing a bit of the defensive edge. Fine balancing act but I think it's the way to go.

Oliver for Brayshaw. Oliver is a better player.

Like many, I reckon Gus is NQR right now.

i love the kid and consider him a walk up start in our best 22 when he is fully fit. I suspect though that he is not fully fit, or at least he is not fully match fit. He is a second year player who has missed a decent chunk in both of his preseasons and IMO needs to go back to Casey and play in the middle for 3 or 4 weeks until he is fully match fit.

Hunt must stay in. Etihad is a fast track, Saints are very quick with their many young small forwards. Hunt is lightning, we will need his speed. Hard to tell perhaps last night but his speed, such as the 3rd man up spoil in Q3, is integral to our back half. Same as Lumumba.

he and Wagner look very good for the future. Much more composed than Grimes and Garland who they replaced.

oliver in for Brayshaw on form, ditto Petracca for Frost.

I think thats the right call as much as I love the skill of Brayshaw. Petraccas ready from what Ive heard.

Hogan had a shocker but still took  the most marks on the ground.

Our aerial dominance is the reason we are winning.Frost is a part of that and so is Max of course as well as Watts,Tom Mac and Frost to a lesser degree.

The quicker ,smaller players are the ones under the microscope but I can't see them getting dropped either.

He may end up the better player, but I wouldn't be assessing Brayshaw on what you've seen in 2016.

He's a far better player than what we're presently witnessing.

No longer acceptable. There are players in the twos that are earning their chance. Gus seems to be running out of puff way too early. Maybe the rotation limits are hurting him. He has already been rested once this season (5 weeks old). He just looked ordinary last night had 9 touches with 4 clangers. We now have the depth to ensure every one in the 1sts has earned their spot. Gus has not.

I rate Brayshaw extremely highly.

Oliver is better at the same stage of their careers and currently offering more.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
