Essendon's List

Their list will be ordinary this year. I don't mind their list 2017 on wards. The Bombers managed to trade out players at top value prior to the saga, and providing those picks were spent wisely, then It could be a blessing in disguise. There are a lot of disgruntled teams (Port, St Kilda) either whinging about compo or being bent over, but that is just a credit to the Bombers. Its not their fault that opposition teams didn't factors in the prospect of a WADA ban. If Essendon didn't start offloading players prior to 2016, they would be in a far worse position than they are now. The Bombers will enter 2017 with a relatively young list, and the impending arrival of a number 1 draft pick.

Yeah and a dozen players the club can't contact until September that's along time for a player to get bitter especially when the season starts , my guess is out of the dozen there will be 4 players that stay because there coming to the end but the younger ones like Heppel and Hurley will seek trades .

I thought this thread would be about picking Essendon's list apart like a carcass.

I'd be in Hurley's ear right now trying to lure him to the MFC.

Of course some of our more sanctimonious supporters won't want a "drug cheat" at the club, but I'm far more interested in trying to win a flag.

In terms of any trade discussion between the clubs, it'd be interesting if the MFC put on the table that it is willing not to pursue compensation against Essendon for Melksham, if in exchange Essendon agrees to trade Hurley to us i.e. has our potential claim against Essendon got any trade value?

Ironic if we land Hurley. I thought he was the tall to land in that draft out of Watts, NikNat and Hurley (even though I am a fan of Watts).

I suspect Stockholm Syndrome might kick in for those still at Windy Hill. If that's the case, they may end up with an unbelievably strong willed team in 2017 trying to right what they consider to be a wrong imposed upon them.

And an earlier poster (perhaps more than one) criticised the AFL for keeping Essendon in the 2016 competition and not playing a 17 team competition. Keep in mind that the AFL has a contract with its broadcasters to deliver 9 games a week (other than the bye week and finals). Pretty hard to do that with 17 teams.

The AFL and the Public didn't count Essendon's games in 2012/ 2013 as games, and rightly so. Contracts can be changed.

Or he's a perfect fit. How often do we hear the game is played between the ears? At least he knows what his teammates (both playing and suspended) are going through. If he's fit enough and has the desire to play (which I assume he has) I think it's an inspired choice.

Maybe.

Or its a pretty ordinary look to sign someone who has been suspended already for illicit drug use when you've had 34 players done for the same thing. I would have thought they would be trying to get away from that image.

Ahmed Saad also wants to play for the bombers!

Apparently Essendon is going to be allowed to have some top up players. Are we allowed to have one too?

No

But oh, the irony:  EFC have (i) signed Crowley, a convicted drug cheat to  "top up" their convicted drug cheats.   And (ii)John Worsfold, B Pharm.

Yeah, fair call. I didn't take that into account. It is plausible that multiple players could leave. Heppell won't leave, he is a very loyal kid (apparently), I'd be confident from what I have heard about him - that he won't leave. Not sure on the others though.

Apparently, EFC have offered all 12 players a one year extension to existing contracts.  Probably gives the fringe players a chance for another go and ensures the younger ones don't go elsewhere.  Yet to see how many take up the offer.

But it could backfire if they have list management issues, having to keep players at the end of the year they would otherwise have retired or delisted.

Why? He took a drink one day too late. Drank it on Friday and would have been fine and legal if he had it on Thursday. Hardly an injector of substances on a regular basis.

Heppels brother had scathing words to say about the club the other day, I just can't see any player under 26 staying why would you there convicted drug cheats there names tarnished for life I wouldn't stay there I bet Parishs parents on draft night was hoping we scooped him up why would you want your kid involved in that mess the fallout going to be around for years, Heppels probably known 2 years of enjoyable AFL footy now he's lost another season he's gone same as Hurley you can see why Carlisle and Ryder left.

I don't get it from a football perspective. The guy is in his 30's and hasn't played much footy over the last couple of years.

You'd reckon Essendrug would try and get something out of this [censored] up and set out to find some blokes who might have a future

If people are concerned about the "look" of Essendon taking on Crowley and maybe Saad, I think they're looking in the wrong direction. Surely the appointment of Worsfold as coach is far more problematic. Not because of the irony of his Pharmacy qualification but because he was in charge at West Coast when that club obviously had uncontrolled problems with players taking unusual substances.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
