Apparently the hun have realised that no one will be getting priority picks after we were continuously rejected, now saying that Leuenberger will net them a pick after their 1st rounder.

No one want to be at the Lions. Leuie leaving, Aish leaving, now Stef Martin wants out. They'll need the extra pick just to make up the numbers

Here's some free advice to the geniuses at Brisbane's list management: if you want to steal Collingwood's best young midfielder, maybe wait until he's out of contract next time, rather than sell your whole [censored] farm then turn around a year later bitching you have no young players.

Losing Martin and Leunberger? If they are trading Aish and Martin I suggest they trade for a ruckman!

But Lam, out of contract or not, unless Brisbane finished last, which they didnt, they would need to trade for him anyway.

I would have thought nobody would overlook Beams with pick 1, and im confident that we would have taken hi with 2 or 3, had he been available.

Brisbane would have struggled to land him with pick 5.

Was always going to cost them handsomely, but moreso when he was still contracted at the Pies.

Point is, if they're so desperate for young players, probably should've thought twice about trading off 3 kids for 1.

Well while we're on the subject of draft picks let's get the ball rolling on how much are they going to lose to C this weekend.

Everyone got stuck into us so let's pass it on. I reckon 50 points should be good to negate percentages and retain the status quo....

Yes they should get a pp, they will only lose them anyway, if they lose aish then that's three first rounds that have not stayed at the club for more then two years, i would not be surprised if the AFL do give them extra salary cap. No one wants to stay there, i don't know how they can stay in the competition, with 8 million in debt but 4 million they owe to the AFL don't. So what are the AFL going to do. What history tells you is that once a extra concession is given teams win flags, but once that is taken away that team falls as quick as they rise, its false glory, lets hope the swans fall in a heap once their salary cap concession is scaled back.

No way should Brisbane get a priority pick!

They already stand to have 5 maybe 6 of the first 25 picks. How so? Look at this extract from ‘Whispering Jack’s’ Draft Prospects post:

Plough's TAC Cup Future Stars selections for this week:-
Round 1

1. Brisbane - Jacob Weitering
12. Brisbane* - Ben Keays
19. Brisbane* - Eric Hipwood
* Academy bid

Then in Round 2 Brisbane have pick #22. They will probably get a round 1 pick for Aish. Stef Martin wants to leave so they will probably get a high pick in a trade. ie 5 maybe 6 picks in the top 25!

Yes, they have to pay for the 2 Academy players with ‘draft points’ but there are ways of getting those without using pick 22, the Aish or Martin picks eg they can trade out C+ players for 2015 late round2/round 3 picks (points) or bring forward late 2016 draft pick (points).

It is also an absolute joke for Brisbane to get an ‘upgraded’ comp pick for Leunberger to pick 2. They would have 6 maybe 7 picks in the top 25! The HS argue Frawley comp pick is a precedent. That is c-r-a-p as we did not have all the other top 25 picks for Academy players and Aish/Martin type trades! At least Frawley was a B/B+ player; Leunberger is nowhere near that.

The press should focus on the favourable draft position Brisbane already have and stop this stupid talk of an ‘upgraded’ Leunberger comp pick or a priority pick! Club Presidents should start lobbying the AFL to do the same!

Would be a joke if they got pick 2 for Leunberger, he has done nothing in the AFL.

At least Frawley was an All Australian

That is not how compensation works. It's relative to the worth (salary) of the player and finishing position of the club.

Salary determines band.

If it's the highest band, the team gets a pick straight after their first pick. In Brisbane's case it'll be pick 2.

Astonishing that people still don't understand that.

You can only value a player on the worth of their salary. That determines their value.

Higher the salary, higher the worth. Anything else is subjective.

I highly doubt the AFL follows its formula to the letter. We were lucky to get pick 3 last year and Leuenberger could net a similar pick this year.

Spot on, he hasn't exactly done a lot. Definitely not anywhere near pick 2. That would be a joke.

Leuenberger averages 12 kicks 3 marks and 22.9 hitouts.

Wouldn't be in their highest paid players.

Best ever finishes in B&F 6th in 2011 and 2013 playing 22 games. 9th in 2010.

Deserves an end of second round pick at best.

Age is a factor, he is 27, 28 mid next year. It would want to be a decent salary to push Leunberger into pick 2 compo.

He is a ruckman that hasn't done a lot, is always injured, I can't see any side paying overs for him.

Granted there's little transparency as to what qualifies as a big contract, but historically, anything $600,000+ equates to band one.

Of course. Why would anyone pay $600k for him? My point being that if someone is prepared to pay overs for him, that would dictate the compo. If his value is high then his age is irrelevant.
If someone had offered Ablett $600,000 last year when he was 30, would that have brought down the band compensation? I'm not putting the two players in the same league but salary is the only objective way we can value a player's worth to a team. That's why the AFL uses it to determine compensation.

Correct, if the departing player is being paid way overs then it's on the club he's going to for pushing the pick selection so high.

beginning to understand why people cracked it when we got pick 3 for Frawley now.

Leuenberg and Chip are fairly comparable as far as quality of player goes IMO. and rucks are always more in demand and get more cash so I wouldnt be surprised if they get pick 2.

Chip wouldnt be on crazy money at the hawks so the highest band mustnt be that high.

Chip got us band 1 compo because their is a provision to reccomend a different outcome to what the band system suggests, im of the opinion tht was our priority pick

You do not know that was the case, so don't say things like they are facts.

It was reported that they gave him north of $600k - that is more believable as to why we had ND3.

600k at 4 years was the reported contract. Which most thought at the time would be band two given goddard, buddy type contracts were seen as band 1 so common sense would say that it was close to the line and given we were struggling and losing another kpp to a top team, making that judgement that band 1 was a better outcome was the course of action taken

So you're quite right that i don't know for certain, but would be very surprised if we got band 1 on his contract alone

i believe length of contract is also part of the formula along with the amount

I think the AFL formula is little like EFC record keeping.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
