I got too high on excitement at us playing convincingly well and forgot to pay attention to individuals. Will vote once I've watched a replay, if I get the opportunity to watch one.

I agree with you regarding Lumumba. He added some run to this team which had previously been missing.

For me, these six guys stood up during periods where the game was up for grabs. Viney, unlucky as his aggression was fantastic. With improved offensive/decision-making, he would have been just about BOG.

Vandenberg, Cross, Newton and a couple of others a bees dick away and very unlucky.

Tom Mac and Viney the most influential players on the park for me.

Interesting that Brad Johnson had Howe as our best player and I suppose that makes him by default, the best player on the ground (in Brad's eyes) Howe hasn't attracted a lot of votes here.

I was also astonished to discover that Lumumba only had 12 possessions (only 6 more than the 27 minute player - Toumpas ^_^)

I had to have Lumumba in my best as I thought he was quite influential despite his low possession count.

6 - T-Mac

5 - Jones

4 - Watts

3 - Viney

2 - Howe

1 - Lumumba

Apologies to at least another 8 players (especially Garlett, Garland & Tyson)

Usually it's been difficult to find 6 players - I prefer this version of difficult.

6) Jason Taylor (Recognised the need for speed and added four quick guys - Garlett, Lumumba, vandenberg and Frost to the list and still kept the high pics and got a handy father/son).

5) Paul Roos (Got rid of the hard working but high turnover merchants and also decide to go small against a side that is skillful but tiny).

4) Simon Goodwin (If the mail is right that he has encouraged a more attacking style to balance Roosy's possession style lockdown game, then he had a major win).

3) Fitness/Physio/Medical team - Only two players missing through injury if we don't include Bernie who played full game in reserves.

2) Peter Jackson (got Roosy in first place and seems to have steered a dead ship into clear seas)

1) Robbie Flower (his spirit has carried us through and the Dom Tyson's goal was reminiscent of the magical way we used to get excited in 1987 when Robbie's final year sparked play that we normally could only dream of)

It is early days and there will be plenty of more physical sides to come that will upend us, but at least we look competitive.

6 - McDonald - it all came together

5 - Watts - it all came together

4 - Garlett - was dangerous, creative and very team focused

3 - Dunn - was a constant rock in defence

2 - Viney - some howlers but finally took first options , successfully

1 - Howe - clean skills and so valuable despite the limited preseason

Many deserving missed out - a very nice, and unfamiliar, dilemma

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
