Watching Jake Spencer and Jack Fitzpatrick tear it up yesterday at AFL level, I cant help but think of the work B Mac is doing behind the scenes and if hes already weaving his developmental magic at the MFC

Justin Plapp may just be doing some fine work too

He was our little informer on the bench yesterday. Loved it.

McCartney is well known as development coach and deserved the kudos he earned in raising those kids at the Bulldogs but there have been some worrying signs there of late. Their success earlier in the season was based to an extent on the exuberance of youth but the loss of so many experienced players is already starting to take its toll. They have tired badly in their last few games which is the disadvantage of relying on youth.

I heard Nick Maxwell on radio at the weekend saying he hoped Collingwood wouldn't make the eight and certainly not the top six because they were a young side and it was too early for them to be up there because they would end up getting a difficult draw when they should be ready to take on the challenge of the finals.

The lesson for us is that we have a bit of balance at the club in this phase thanks to our recruiting which has given us some handy experienced players along with some developing recruits and also players like Toumpas and Fitzpatrick etc who have been around for a little while, yet are still developing and that's where I think McCartney comes in. If we can finish middle of the road, then we're starting to build a team to go places.

Met Brendan at the races yesterday and spoke to him about the Dees.

I think he will prove to be one of our best recruits behind PJ and Roos.

He is a nice guy, who was quite prepared to give of his time, about 15 minutes on this occasion, to a Melbourne fan. It started with my welcoming him to the club and he then asked about my involvement.

We discussed his role at the MFC and where he sees the club. He said that if we stay the course and don't get sidetracked we hopefully will be a good side in the next couple of years.

He is enthusiastic about our younger players and is looking forward to working with them and the other Coaches.

From the Freo game he thought Newton and Vandenberg showed they are ready to play for us.

I asked him about the rumour that his leaving was tied to Griffen and he assured me that is not true. Griffen received a great offer from GWS and with his age and fitness level he had to accept. IMO the Dog's President has done us a real favour by changing Coaches. I think Gordon panicked and wasn't prepared to stay the course. We now have Brendan and that is our good fortune.

I can assure you he is a modest man and highly knowledgable about footy. Many say that he is the best development coach in the AFL. Many on here would say his position was the most important to fill. I think we have done it with the best man available.

Good luck Brendan and Go Dees.

might be a win win win, for Us, McCartney, & the Doggies too. go doggies, go get some success. & to bever age as well.

Very happy to have Brendan McCartney at the Demons!

He had a huge grin on his face when he realised we were home and hosed. "Up yours Bulldogs!" Was it that he was thinking?

He's obviously doing some good work behind the scenes for us. It's great to see us developing players better now. Hopefully McCartney can get the youngsters to fulfil their talent unlike the last 7-8 years!

oh, I'd say he would have been handy for your names-sake, at the turning of the last century. not to mention for robbo, yze, green, etc etc...

He's one of 4 candidates on Essendon's senior coaching "hit list" according to the Purple [censored], alongside Worsfold, Dew and another assistant coach.

[censored] off you wankers.

Woosha is a shoe in for the job IMO.

U don't fly to SA of all places to "sound him out" if u didn't think he would take it.

They have to been seen to be looking further than just one candidate.

Goes without saying, they take anything they can get their hands on.

And look at the trouble that got them into.

I'm looking forward to the memes when Worsfold/The Chemist is announced as the drug-cheats coach.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
