Melbourne asks for draft assistance

Do we have to have this discussion every year? It's not a case of 'deserve'. These are the rules. My god, there are some stupid people. Some media outlets continue to peddle agendas that suit the majority of their readership. Some MFC supporters need to realise this.

Apparently Evans on radio tonight said we will not be getting a PP?

Evans should not be pre judging the situation.

Firstly, he's a former employee of the club. How doi we know he's not holding a grudge against it because of some perceptions he might have had whist he was there.

Secondly, because the club has put it for the commission to consider and if he has said this, it's a disgrace.

He didn't say anything, he just said that the rule was in place to help teams field teams in case of a player tragedy ect.

I would say Mitch Clark would come under that, i think we will get one.

Why is there an eligibility formula for the priority pick if it's only doled out after tragic circumstances?

I call BS Evans.

Last I checked the media and popular opinion didn't actually adjudicate on behalf of the commission...

Don't know why Evans is crapping on about having a 'pure' draft when they just introduced FA and compensation picks.

If they were really serious they would get rid of the compensation picks. Seeing where the AFL goes when that happens will be a laugh, I will be putting my cash into the A league.

Agree there are rules and then there are AFL rules, anyone knows that AFL rules are more interpretations than rules. Unfortunately due to the AFL's integrity, high moral standards and ethics they don't let anyone know the formula for these rules so they can change them after they sniff the prevailing breeze and not get called out on it. The AFL stand for integrity, just ask them...

Last I checked they were going to abandon the commission and let everything go to a popular vote. The integrity and impartiality of Fitzpatrick commission is a joke, you, you, you...

Wonder at the post below.:

Bingo!

Screwing up our previous high draft picks is MORE reason to give us draft assistance, not less.

EVERY TEAM THAT REQUIRES DRAFT ASSISTANCE 'BRINGS IT ON THEMSELVES'!

St Kilda will need one in a few years because Lyon decimated their draft picks to find experienced pros in a chase for the flag - they will have to get all their draft picks right to avoid being in the wilderness like us for 7 years.

APPLY THE GOD DAMN RULES!

That is all we are asking.

CTFD.

Evans said it was less likely rather than likely that we get a PP. Yet the AFL allow quasi PP's in Academies and father/son. It seems a little odd that a team that wins only 9 games in 3 seasons cannot get a leg up when the Swans get a top 3 pick this year (Heeney) and next year (Mills) as well as a top 10 next year (Dunkley) on the cheap.

It seems there will never be another PP given for poor performance. Wish we had an Academy!!!!

No best to ask Eddie first if you want the right answer!

Collingwood who have the fixture from Heaven minus a couple of Sunday night matches to maximise their income while we do the twilight Sundays against GWS and similar that starve us of income and sponsorship, they are the best arbiters of equalisation measures.

I hate hearing this so much.

People going on about how we don't 'deserve' it.

We obviously haven't done anything right the last 8 years and we could have done a lot better, and if we'd done those things better maybe we wouldn't be here right now. But it's not about 'deserving' anything. If we gave draft picks out to clubs that 'deserved' them, like they're some sort of reward, we'd give one to Hawthorn or Sydney this year. Don't they 'deserve' a great draft pick for winning the flag?

No, we don't 'deserve' one. But we (arguably, at the very worst) need one.

it does not matter what we have or have not done in the past, what counts is there is a rule that stats that if you dont win enough games you are eligible for a pp. The failure to receive a pick then needs to be justified by the AFL why they REPEATEDLY refuse melbourne this when other clubs have had them.

As for public opinion very few supporters are going to give any other club a priority pick or any other sort of helping hand.

The sad thing is that other clubs should understand where we are at, and that we need these picks, it is not as if one extra pick to the Dees is really going to make that much difference to the top teams, other than it may make us more competitive next year which makes for a better contest all around.

For anyone who gives a rats this is the law we're discussing. Interpret it as you like, the AFL certainly will.

Note - there is nothing that says it has to be after your first pick and it's not set on bands like free agency compo. They can give you whatever they want. Roll on pick 20.

This we don't deserve it thing irritates me - the supporters do deserve it. We have a right to follow a team that is reasonable to watch and competitive. The supporters didn't make the mistakes in recruiting and development so it is a specious argument to claim that we as a group should be made to suffer.

The AFL has an obligation to ensure that each clubs members get a reasonable bang for our buck. Very few could argue that this has happened, not just for 1 year, but for 8 years now.

I like the way the club is playing the game ( other than the 22 or so every weekend ) Jackson does the diligent thing, Roos sows a seed of intrigue with his declarations. But it will come to naught as we've a snowflake's chance in hell of actually getting one.

Im not sure why they even exist ( if in principle only ). They're dead.

But its a political game and its good to see the club on the front foot , if only the 40 odd others knew what to do with theirs !!!

It's interesting that the media heavy hitters are now onside, like them or not these are the key people at their organisation and their opinions carry weight. Smith, Wilson, Robinson & Whateley.

I must have missed something. Have they all backed us getting a PP?

emma quayle doesn't think we 'deserve' one, and her reasoning as to why we won't get one:

Crucially, any recommendation put to the commission would look long and hard at what Melbourne has the opportunity to do in the next three or four years, not what it has failed to do in the three or four just gone. Hogan, Viney, Dom Tyson, Christian Salem, Jimmy Toumpas, Jay Kennedy-Harris have only just started out and should be on a big upswing. Nathan Jones, Jeremy Howe, Jack Trengove, Jack Grimes, Colin Garland, Jack Watts, Neville Jetta, Chris Dawes and others are all good enough to be part of a team that wins a lot more games for some time yet. The Demons have the No. 2 pick in this year's draft, and probably No. 3, too, if Frawley goes. Whether they trade those picks or keep them, they have the chance to use them well.

It's not a matter of if we deserve. I'm sick of the club bloody asking for hand outs ever other week.

Get your shite together and make the club stand up without asking for charity.

This kind of post I find pathetically simplistic.

How about we get 5 Friday night games. We deserve them. How about we get blockbuster games, We deserve them. How about we get a decent stadium deal like Geelong that makes $750k with 20000 at the ground. We deserve it. We deserve as much as the other 17 teams in the comp. Its as simple as that. If you are going to have equalisation policies then make everything equal.

Its not a level playing field. Stop acting like it is. Until the playing field is actually level then inequities will exist.

Stop perpetuating the 'we are the only one who gets handout' myths. The whole AFL is handout based. Its just not equal.

    DERAILMENT by KC from Casey

It wasn’t quite a trainwreck although at times, it sure looked like one, so I’ll settle for “derailment”.  The trip to Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield outside the back of Brisbane might not exactly be the same place where Homer Simpson’s family resides but, if you listened closely to the utterances of the Casey Demons fans both at the ground or watching via livestream, you could hear lots of groaning and plenty of expressions of “D'oh!” reverberating in the background, particular

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
