My view on last night.

Jamar needs to better direct his taps and stop running under the ball at the bounce.

Viney had a mare with getting caught and disposal but not once did he get down on himself and crack it, he just went harder more often. Love this kid.

JKH looked good in traffic up and around the ground, was a bit surprised by that.

Terlich, love his effort but FFS he is the worst kick.

McDonald is a great defender but some one needs to help him with his awareness as he has zero!

Bail... That game being your 50th save you from the red vest.

Jetta... I've been one of if not the biggest critic from day one, but he showed a bit last night (still not convinced but his defensive efforts and spoils were first class) and I was stunned to see him get the vest and not Bail, Howe or Watts.

Watts...ummm....yup....

Salem, from behind and a bit of distance looks like Gazza, on what he showed will be better than Gazza.

Trying to keep a lid on it, but I have a saucepan lid and a dump truck of excitement.

Dawes and Cross, showing the way you have to work and run, they will be the building blocks for us to become a team of elite hard workers.

Just to bring up a favourite of mine - Alex Georgiou, body on body with LRT all night, only got a dozen possessions himself, but the increasingly frustrated and angry LRT was kept to one kick and three handballs.

Will not be dropped as long as he keeps doing the job assigned to him.

THIS from Crossy in his post-match interview, shows that he noticed and is fed up (already) with some players who aren't putting in:

“We certainly had intent and pressure from most of the guys, which was a massive improvement from last week, but that’s the minimum standard that you have to have every week.

“It’s a tough game that we play and you can’t have any passengers any week, so that’s what was disappointing.”

He will get 2 weeks for punching Buddy out-deserves a medal.

The best thing to come out of last night was watching Salem debut-his actually looks like a player.

It hasn't hurt Pendles. Honestly basketball is not the problem here, with most players it is seen as a bonus.

IIRC Chris Dawes was a highly rated teenage basketballer but chose footy

Now I may be stretching things a bit here but as Roosy was giving him a bake at 3 quarter time Jack took a swig of drink and looked past him and I couldn't help but think,'for facks sake pay attention to what he's saying to you'. It was a little thing but given he'd had time to have a drink he needed to look the coach in the eye. It was like he didn't grasp the situation at all.

I was thinking the same thing but didn't comment - thought that I would be thought a bit old fashioned...but it didn't show much respect for the coach or, IMO, a grasp of where he stood and the situation Roos was setting out.

I was heartened by the effort. Jamar gave us first use much more often. i think that would have made a huge difference. The Swans were inaccurate but that had to do with their mids having to do all the running and kick the goals. That is as much to do with their lack of forward potency than anything.

Pedo is working his guts out. Matt Jones too. Terlich is brave and takes marks in front of leading key forwards. His disposal gives me the willies.

We are desperately in need of tough half backs that can kick and have some leg speed.

I remember Webber and I both calling for Howe to be traded last year. I argued he was lazy and a poor thinker on the field. Howe is a liability. Watts is not a footballer and nothing will change that. Can't get cross at/with him. He doesn't have it. It is not in his nature.

Salem is a footballer and not even the MFC can change that.

Funny, but I'd think that if Chip won his position, we were a big chance of winning the game last night. We matched the swans through the midfield for large chunks of the evening. We just needed reward for effort. The sooner we can wave goodbye to chip and watts and howe and get some players in that work hard and have some talent, the better. The lack of competitive effort from those three is really stark. I*'d drop chip when hogan is fit. I'd drop Watts and Howe as soon as toump and riley are fit. Salem is starting 18. JHK should be running around for casey - he's not ready.

BTW, the umpiring last night was despicable. They are now just randomly paying frees. It is inconsistent contest to contest. Buddy gets a bit of body contact..free. Chip has a swans player pulling is arms down - nothing in it. There are dozens of examples and they compel me to use very bad language!

You are OBVIOUSLY watching the game very closely...very accurately put post.. Anyone disagree, then reasons welcome..

Apparently Roos made similar comments in his press conference. I assume Watts and possibly Howe had some home truths told to them this week and no doubt the leaders would be disappointed to see their response.

They are a legacy of Mark Neeld....not needed at this Club..Still part of the poor attitude of the "old" culture... That kind of mindset cannot be tolerated.. And WONT be by Roos..

Terlich has copped an unfair amount of hammer. I realize he makes the odd super clanger but a couple of his tackles were ferocious and he can get the pill. At least two of his more credentialed mates could do worse than use his guts and endeavour as an example to emulate.

They showed roos at 3/4 time talking to Howe and Watts on game day this morning. Obviously they didnt follow Roos's instructions on what they were meant to do and team instructions. Because after roosy left them he was just shaking his head as if to say my god what is wrong with you.

Interesting to hear on radio today they were talking about Watts and some other players and they said watts is such a good runner and has the motor but just doesnt do enough in games. Said he should be shown footage of himself near contests where he doesnt work hard to get there quick enough and contest.

I reckon this guy will end up a mid and a useful one at that, runs hard, links up and given time will use it well and make good decisions.

if he can eliminate the 2 or 3 stupid kicks that he manages every week he would be much better.

Here's the vision of Paul Roos talking to Jack Watts and Jeremy Howe last night:

You can see the pure exasparation on Paul Roos face as he's walking away. You can also see Jeremy Howe turn around as if to say: "Who the hell are you to tell me what to do? I can take a speccie! Can you?"

Totally agree. Just keeps doing his job. Roos must love him.

And I'll be disgusted if he gets any sanction for standing-up to Buddy. MFC have not had such "spine" for years!

I read Howe's face as more 'what is he talking about?'.

A lack of understanding, which is indicative of where we've come from and where we're at.

And who is going to replace him?

Garland looks to be injured again, that leaves Tapscott and Strauss.

Safe as a church.

Yeah. I was being a little comical there. "What is he talking about" is definitely more accurate, and you're right--it does show how far back we are. At least Roos has the runs on the board to get us past all that.

I'm sure crap like this is one of the reasons Mark Neeld was such a "bad" coach; our players just didn't respect him enough to trust that he knew what he was talking about.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
