Frawley wants to know...

While I think the chances are slim that he'll stay if this is another poor season, the fact that he's not waiting until the end of the season is encouraging. If we can at least show signs of promise, it'll help. Hell, if we can have 4 or 5 wins on the board by the middle of the season, he might sign on the dotted line.

Interesting that Roos' 2 year contract seems to be a bit of a complication. I imagine a large portion of the playing group want him for 3 years minimum, lest he leaves at the end of 2015 and the club falls back into disarray. I'd hate to think we end up back in this situation next year with Hogan (assuming he has a breakout year).

Frawley puts off contract talks until the end of the year.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/defender-james-frawley-puts-contract-talks-with-melbourne-demons-on-hold-20140130-31pq5.html

We all know what that means!

I just wish some of them would have the balls to come out and say 'I'm holding out for the money'.

Mahoney said Frawley had only indicated he wanted to wait before discussing contracts and had not said he wanted to wait until the end of the season.

So which part of reading do you have a problem with???? or should I say comprehension???

If I was James that's what I would do, there have been so many false promises at the MFC that it makes sense to wait and see. I reckon we will head in the right direction and he will sign before the half way mark of the season.

The difference between a rival offer and our matching it (while paying 95% of the SC) is, in the equivilent of a "rounding error".

James is entitled to not the see ball come flying into the backline so often and so fast. Must be hard for him having been there for the shyte years.

However, leadership is an interesting concept in these truncated careers. If I got only 10 years in my peak earnings phase, as someone coming in with zero assets and plenty of dependencies, then I would look to maximise that. As would most folks if they're being honest.

But is leadership in this short context transportable? Does running away from something as one of the better players in a train wreck = commercial value (and does it constitute leadership?) ?

End of ramble....

Yep, see you're point on timing and made that change.

Nevertheless, I think players and managers know how to handle the media, as do clubs. If he were keen on staying, he'd say he was working through discussions. The bluntness of the message is the key here.

Can anyone tell me how this restricted free agency thing works? If we match an offer from another club is Chip locked in to the terms of that contract with us? By that I mean the length of the contract. So for example if the Suns were to offer 6 or 8 years for X dollars and we match it, is Chip locked in to being a Dee for that period? If so this could work out in our favour and it would be smart management to make sure our gun players fall out of contract in their restricted years rather than unrestricted years.

Sounds like he's gone to me...

If the talk is that he's definitely leaving, I hardly think he would've been included in the leadership group following an extensive Leading Teams process. His attitude towards the club and his future would've come out loud and clear through that.

It'll be a big contract year for Frawley, particularly given that he'll be arguably the most sought after restricted free agent, and I suspect his manager's telling him to cool his jets for a while on the contract talks (ie, wait and see how the club performs AND what other offers are likely to be on the table). In short, no need to rush - it's only the pre season and there's a long way to go.

Not necessarily good, or bad - it just seems to be a very commercial approach IMO.

Can't blame I'm for waiting to see what happens with the club both on and off field this year.

If he stays, we have one of the best defenders in the comp for years to come.

If he goes, we should be looking at - given his age and any contract offer he'll receive - band 1 compensation for losing him.

I'd rather he stays, of course.

The best way to handle this is to accept that he will go elsewhere... no emotional involvement, just enjoy his final season with the Dees. I repeat, "do not get emotionally involved".

I don't know how you follow the club - but my affection for the club, and certain of its players, isn't altogether logical. Or clinical.

And that's why I've stuck with the club for so bloody long. I should've stopped watching the Dees following our loss to the Dockers in the second semi final in 2006. Because, as a supporter, it's largely been a waste of a lot of time (and $$$) since then.

In short, I can't turn off the tap emotionally on matters that adversely impact upon the club. When, and if I do, I'll just be another of those 'Dees' supporters who spends all winter skiing at Hotham, hasn't watched a game since the Granny in 2000, hasn't ever bought a membership, and yet who claims to be a 'died in the wool' Dees supporter.

Required players (potentially) electing to leave the club are not in the 'whatever' category for me.

I don't know if these supporters actually exist. There is no snow all winter at Hotham or any other mountain in Oz for that matter!

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
