NAB Challenge 1 - Richmond v Melbourne

I thought Chip was poor tonight and mentioned it a couple of times to the guys I was with. He seemed to take forever to decide where to kick it and when he did he kicked floaters that were intercepted. Not his best game.

Grimes seemed ok to me I didn't see a lot of him but he was ok in what I did see.

Chip's defensive efforts were good but his decision making wasn't the best, but there's only one that I can't think of the resulted in a direct goal. He always seems to start slow does Chip and get better through the year.

Grimes looked right back at home for me back in defense.

And i forgot the second biggest positive apart from the win was the fact of no injuries!

A great start to the pre-season, a lot to like tonight and a lot of potential improvement still from quite a few of our players who played, plus those still to come back. After seeing Geelong, Collingwood and Hawthorne play, I say we still have a long way to go, but we at least appear to be on the right track to make a contest of it. I used to look at the stats of our games last year and rarely did we have more than a couple of players with 20 or more possessions, i cannot recall anyone having 30+ possessions. Fantastic job boys, a great start.

You are probably right he will improve on the run and he's still our best big back.

Trengove looked like he got his awareness and touch back finally

I couldnt tell if he has picked up any pace in the preseason,. not that it matters as a lot of star players arent quick.

Well done Trenners, amazing game.

Maybe chip should sign the nine year contract we have offered and be done with it, then he can concentrate on his footy!

Big question.

Do I watch the replay of the game I've just come home from or do I watch the cricket?

Thanks to Foxtel IQ I can watch them both at the same time.

lol shareholder?

it was just as good at the local club for free, with a cool throthy by side. on a 100 inch plasma.

On account of the fact that we know how valuable and consistent Cross and Vince are, a truly exciting thing about tonight was that Dom Tyson and Viv Michie showed why there are big wraps on them. The MOST excitingly unexpected recruits for me though were JKH (obviously), and Georgiou.....looked like a 100 gamer, and cool as a cucumber. A BRILLIANT pickup for peanuts.

And for all those berating the likes of Spencer, Strauss, Nicholson et al, WAKE UP TO YOURSELVES!!!!!

They also had 445 disposals to the Tigers' 262. Wow

Can someone tell me why Spencer didnt get a 9 pointer when Richmond did an interchange infringement? I thought u used to get them with penalties like that because the free came form outside the 50

I thought the same when Trenners got a free outside 50 and a 50mtr penalty kicking the goal from inside the 50.

That used to be classed as a super goal.

Positives:
Vince - early days but he's a so fluent with the ball and (I say this cautiously given the opposition) he's a better clearance player than I thought

JKH - If football IQ was measured like basketball IQ his would be off the charts

Michie, Cross and Tyson are as advertised - all have faults and positives and so on but they were there about'

Max King - don't expect to see him for 3 years now but he shows something

Georgiou - again as advertised, hard, tough, knows how to position himself

Handballing to space around a contest - improved by 1000 times

Offensive and defensive spread

Trengove - he's not perfect yet and open preseason football suits him to a tee but his ability to find space, accumulate and usually make sound decisions is very nice to see, his kicking goes from sublime one minute to a stupid turnover the next and he's a match up concern against someone like Deledio who got a stoppage goal on him but a lot of positives

Roh Bail - fantastic, hard, fast, hard working, if he was a draftee he'd get the same buzz as JKH. Just didn't finish from set shots for goal

Concerns

Still short some class usage from half back but Strauss played a horrendous first quarter but followed it up with some reasonably decent footy and Frawley, Grimes, Terlich and Dunn all looked to be running and supporting the right way even if their ball use wasn't perfect

Jake Spencer. The competitive effort was their but he threw the ball at one stage and turned it at the goal square in other. Is he simply too uncoordinated to persist with is still my big concern. Overall lost the hit outs as well. But full marks for giving it to that turd Dusty.

Matt Jones' kicking

Sam Blease's inability to get in to the game. Still floats around with stuff all impact besides a brilliant running goal (that should've been a brilliant running kick to a leading forward)

The fact that Tyrone Vickery, Brett Deledio and Steven Morris still play AFL annoys me

They changed the rule (and I think for the better). Now if you get a 50m penalty that will take you from outside the forward 50 to inside the forward 50 you have a choice.

Either:

A. Take the full 50m and go for 6

OR

B. Take the 50m penalty until you have the man on the mark at about 45m and presuming you then kick from outside 50 you get 9 if you score a goal.

Both Spencer (who was taken to about 30m out and kicked from around 35) and Trengove (man on the mark at about 15m) chose the safer option of going for 6 and I think they were the right call. It obviously depends on your kicking distance and accuracy but if the man on the mark from the 50m penalty will get you withing 35m you are probably best taking the shot for 6. If it's somewhere between 35 and 45 you may as well go from outside 50 for 9.

There may well have been a rule change on that (shock horror), because when Trenners got the 50m penalty he had the choice of kicking on 50 for the 9 pointer or going inside for a normal goal. I do remember at one stage it was a case that if you got a 50m penalty that brought you inside it was a super-goal.

I know I'll get howled down for this but Spencer played a very important role in the middle. His body work and contesting set up our mids, yes he made mistakes, as they say you shouldn't let a ruck man kick the ball(unless his name is Ottens or Cox).

When young Max was in at the centre bounces and in contested situations around the ground he just couldn't get any body on his opponent, but he does show he has something to work with.

Our best ruck option is still Clark in my mind (if he can get on the park), I know that Roos will use him as the forward ruck option. The question is who will be number one.

Even the commentators on Fox were being complimentary, including David king.

Now that's definitely something I have not heard in a LONG time.

My god has the world gone mad???

Praise from Hardwick also.

I was shocked to see Blease have so few possessions, he seemed to be on the lead everywhere and was noticeable all night I guess that it's no use presenting if your teammates think you are always the wrong option.

Not sure what you do with him.

When was the last time we had the top five players in a match? Even if it is the NAB cup, I'm celebrating tonight.

Good to see Jack is on the way back. If he can build on where he was a few years ago (pre Neeld) then we will have another good mid/utility player and we might yet see the Bartel comparisons become a reality.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.
